And the three keep heading towards the northwest section of the arena.
INT. VALLEY-SOUTHWEST SECTION-NIGHT
Bryan, Jack, and Veronica keep heading north.
JACK:
I’m getting kind of tired of this game, aren’t you?
BRYAN:
(Clearly annoyed) Yes, and?
JACK:
Once we’re out of it, I’ll steal your girl and reap the rewards of this game.
BRYAN:
What did you just say???
Bryan rounds on Jack. Veronica watches nervously.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
I think this game is getting to you.
JACK:
And why do you think that?
BRYAN:
Because you’re starting to say stupid things.
JACK:
Like what?
BRYAN:
Like getting Veronica. And how about...reaping rewards?
Now Jack seems to be confused.
JACK:
What do you mean?
BRYAN:
(Smiles)
I mean, the winner gets NO prize, other than his or her freedom.
Suddenly, Jack looks alarmed.
JACK:
(Dumbfounded) You can’t be serious.
BRYAN:
This game contains murderers, not just regular criminals. So what do you expect?
Jack is lost for words.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
And I’m not even with Veronica yet. We were just talking to each other. That’s all. (Pauses, says to Jack and Veronica) Come on. Let’s keep going.
Veronica glares at Jack, who raises his eyes at her. And she walks next to Bryan.
Jack, who’s behind them, spots the last gray wolf spying on them from behind a tall tree.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
Are there any wolves following us?
JACK:
No.
BRYAN:
Thank goodness. I’ve had enough of them for a full day now.
All three laugh apprehensively as they keep progressing north.
Jack looks behind the group at the wolf, which is now creeping up on them.
He makes his way next to Bryan.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
(Mocks)
Oh, now you’ve decided to join us?
JACK:
I guess so. It can’t hurt. I’m not getting her anyways.
BRYAN:
So what’s your deal? Are you even sorry for what you did?
JACK:
I don’t know. I try to find a way to be sorry. I think I am.
BRYAN:
Well, you know me. I’ll never be sorry for mine.
Jack rolls his eyes.
JACK:
Right. Because you never did it.
The wolf is now somewhere to the right of Jack.
He steps quickly in front of Bryan and points towards the north.
BRYAN:
What are you doing?
JACK:
I think I see something.
VERONICA:
Where?
JACK:
I don’t know. (Pause) Never mind. It’s gone.
BRYAN:
Do you mean one of the wolves?
JACK:
Yes.
BRYAN:
Ok then. Let’s keep an eye out for any of the wolves.
Suddenly, the gray wolf leaps from the bush.
It jumps onto Bryan’s shoulder and basically tackles him.
Jack stumbles (on purpose) and falls over, leaving Veronica to deal with the wolf. She stabs the wolf, but not hard enough, and it gets off of Bryan and attacks her. Then Bryan gets up and stabs it multiple times through the chest.
The wolf is dead.
Bryan hurries over to Veronica, who coughs out blood.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
Are you ok?
VERONICA:
My chest.
BRYAN:
Let me see.
He lifts up Veronica’s shirt.
There are bite marks all over her chest.
And a small part of her skin is torn all the way to her internal organs.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
(Looks absolutely worried) You’ll be fine.
VERONICA:
I don’t think so.
BRYAN:
No. You will. You’re not losing too much blood.
Although Veronica is bleeding, it’s clear that she won’t lose nearly enough blood to make her go unconscious.
Bryan turns suspiciously towards Jack.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
Jack, what happened?
JACK:
I don’t know. I was surprised and fell.
BRYAN:
That’s pretty lame. Anyways, you were looking behind us. How did you not see the wolf?
JACK:
I didn’t see it at the time. It must’ve gone away once I turned around.
Both Bryan and Veronica look at each other, clearly confused. They can’t believe that Jack could possibly be so evil.
BRYAN:
Let’s take a break.
JACK:
(Almost yells)
Why? We need to keep going.
BRYAN:
Because Veronica is injured, even more than I am right now.
Bryan watches Jack closely as he walks away from him and Veronica.
Hours later.
Bryan checks his watch: It’s nearly dawn.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
Guys, we need to get going.
VERONICA:
Alright.
BRYAN:
(Says kindly)
Do you need me to support you?
Veronica nods her head slowly.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
Ok. (Turns to Jack) Can you help me please? Thank you.
JACK:
Whatever it takes to survive.
Jack goes to Veronica’s left and hoists her shoulder above his.
And so does Bryan.
Let’s go.
BRYAN:
And the three continue their way north.
INT. VALLEY-WEST SECTION-DAWN
It’s nearly daytime.
Bryan and the other two survivors are stalked by the white wolf.
Jack sees it again but says nothing.
Soon enough, the wolf disappears behind them, heading off in another direction.
JACK:
You know, it’s interesting how you fell in love with a criminal.
BRYAN:
And what’s your point?
JACK:
My point being, in that if I were innocent, which one would she pick?
Jack looks at Veronica closely, who says nothing in response to what he said.
BRYAN:
I doubt that’s relevant now. You should just focus on surviving, not seeing who gets the best girl right now.
JACK:
There’s only two wolves left. I think my chances are pretty good.
BRYAN:
Be careful. The alpha’s still alive.
Bryan peers behind himself. There’s no wolf in sight.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
(Asks himself)
Why did I have a feeling that we were being followed earlier?
JACK:
Maybe because we were.
Bryan and Veronica look at Jack suspiciously.
VERONICA:
(Whispers to Bryan) What’s up with him?
BRYAN:
Yeah. He’s been acting all strange.
VERONICA:
(Anxiously)
Are you sure you haven’t seen anything?
JACK:
Positive.
BRYAN:
You were behind us the whole time.
Jack shrugs.
JACK:
I said what I said.
Veronica shakes her head and Bryan wraps his arm around her comfortingly.
BRYAN:
Just ignore him. (Pauses) Don’t lose focus.
JACK:
Yes. Don’t lose focus.
Bryan glowers at Jack.
And the three keep heading forward.
INT. VALLEY-NORTHWEST SECTION-DAY
Bryan, Jack, and Veronica continue their way towards a waterfall that’s situated about half-a-mile away from them.
INT. MOUNTAINSIDE-NORTHWEST SECTION-NEAR WATERFALL-DAY
The group is now within sight of the waterfall.
BRYAN:
(Almost smiles) I see a waterfall.
VERONICA:
Me too.
JACK:
Great. Now what’s the point of this?
BRYAN:
I don’t know. Maybe we can hide behind it.
JACK:
(Pessimistically)
Only if we get there before the wolves find us.
BRYAN:
Them discovering us is not likely, so we should be fine.
From somewhere behind the group, the white wolf follows them.
Meanwhile, the group keeps progressing towards the waterfall at a fast walk.
Bryan looks behind him and sees a bush move. He immediately stops in his tracks.
Then so do the others.
JACK:
What are you doing?
BRYAN:
Ok, please. You have been behind us the whole time and haven’t noticed anything?
Yes.
JACK:
BRYAN:
Well, I just saw a bush move behind us.
JACK:
Maybe it’s just a bird or something.
Bryan shoves Jack, and is about to do so again when Veronica comes between them.
VERONICA:
(Begs)
Stop it, please!
BRYAN:
No. I won’t. He’s been playing with us all along.
VERONICA:
I know. But let’s not allow ourselves to get into another argument that will attract attention.
