All the students of St. Celia's are gathered outside and around the school gates. Some students are smoking, some are playing football but most of them are chatting; catching up on what they did during the summer.

The teachers begin to emerge from their cars and some on their bikes.

Mrs Thompson and Miss Khan emerge from their cars practically in sync, holding their briefcases and exercise books.

The pair begin their discussion as they walk.

MISS KHAN:

Long time no f***ing see Miss T. I can tell that hubby of yours has been looking after you during the summer, look at you! YOU ARE glowing you are!

MRS THOMPSON:

(Mrs Thompson laughs) Oh, nonsense! It's just the tan left over from my holidays. Give it a couple of weeks, I'll be paler than you are!

MISS KHAN:

See what I mean, you've always been too humble for your own good. Keeping it quiet that you've been on your travels.

MRS THOMPSON:

Yeah, it's not really a big deal, it's not like I left Europe.

THE PAIR BURST INTO LAUGHTER.

EXT.SCHOOL COMPOUND.Day

The laughter of Miss Khan and Mrs Thompson ends abruptly as they enter the school gates. The pair are welcomed by a surge of students, statically gathered in a makeshift circle within the school gates. Miss Khan breaks her way into the circle and is surprised by what she finds.

Charlie-Jo and Masie side with Aaliyah against Maxine in this heated argument.

STUDENTS:

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

CHARLIE-JO

The students arrive at their first period of the day, biology.

Aaliyah, Charlie-Jo and Masie make their way to the bottom right corner at the far back of the classroom, whilst Maxine sits alone in front of the teacher's desk.

MR JORDAN:

Right, let's get started! Good morning year 11 and welcome to your last year of secondary school! As you will have noticed, there's been a few changes this year. I'll start with the most obvious one. As you can see, I am not Mrs Queef.

You guys are in year 11, you're supposed to be leading by example and instead, I feel like I'm teaching a bunch of 11-year-olds! I came to this school hearing it was the best of the best and I've been --

The students of Year 11 are quietly getting on with their science work when they are disrupted by Miss Khan knocking at the door.

MISS KHAN:

Good morning Mr, Mr?

MR JORDAN:

MISS KHAN:

Yes, Jaden.

STUDENTS GIGGLE:

MISS KHAN:

If it isn't any bother, could I just borrow Maxine and Aaliyah for a quick chat in the office?

MASIE:

AALIYAH AND MAXINE EXIT THE CLASSROOM.

Int. head teachers' office. day

Miss Khan opens the office door whilst ushering Maxine and Aaliyah to see the headmaster.

MR MYERS:

Good morning girls! Now I am sure it is no surprise to you why you have been brought in here, am I right?

AALIYAH, MAXINE

Yes Mr Myers.

MR MYERS:

I am sure the pair of you know fighting or any form of physical abuse will not be tolerated on school premises! If this happens again, the pair of you will spend a week in isolation, there are some ancient pieces of gum under those tables that need scraping!

MR MYERS GLARES AT AALIYAH AND MAXINE.

AALIYAH, MAXINE

MR MYERS:

Well, I am sure you have both got the message, now is that everything Miss Khan? I have a meeting with the governors I need to prepare for.

Int. Staffroom. day

The second-period bell rings. The teachers that have a free period at 10 am gather in the staffroom.

Some are making refreshments whilst others gather in their cliques and talk amongst themselves.

Miss Khan and Miss Thompson begin their private discussion.

MISS THOMPSON:

10 am free?

MISS KHAN:

Nah not me, I'm free until after lunch on a Monday morning.

MISS THOMPSON:

You lucky f***er. Do you know I had to tell three of our year sevens to roll their skirts down this morning, on their first day too? I'm really not sure what they think this is. They're not doing themselves any favours, not with the reputation Celia's girls have already!

MISS KHAN:

Surprisingly not! Unsurprisingly again, that Mr Myers did f*** all. He didn't even bother getting into what the fight was about, just issued a few threats and sent them on their way. (angrily) Bloody sick of him I am! If you don't care about your job, just say that! Oh, and don't even get me started on that new Mr Jaden, whatever his name is, that's another one that doesn't care about their job.

MISS THOMPSON:

He's new, cut him a bit of slack!

MISS KHAN:

It is the first break time of the year. Some of the boys are playing football whilst some of the girls are looking through their pocket mirrors, touching up their makeup. Other students are walking from the canteen after getting snacks on their break. Most of the students are gathered in their inner circles chatting, as Mr Jordan and Miss Khan supervise them.

MR JORDAN:

Girls! Makeup brushes away, you're in school, not a blooming hair salon!

MISS KHAN:

That doesn't make any sense but okay then.

ROSS, AALIYAHS EX BOYFRIEND IS WALKING INTO THE SCHOOL COMPUND

MISS KHAN (CONT)

ROSS IGNORES MISS KHAN AND WALKS SWIFTLY TOWARDS AALIYAH.

Int. head teachers' office. day

Headteacher Michael Myers is meeting with the governors due to concerns about the school's welfare. Chief governors Lucy and Sal lead the discussion.

MR MYERS:

I've got an idea of what this meeting is about, but does someone care to fill me in?

LUCY:

Michael, as you know, there's no easy way to put it. Your school, this school, the school you promised was going to at least get a "room for improvement" rating from Ofsted five years ago is a failing!

LUCY:

I'm sorry, I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone present. We as a board have concluded you don't seem to care about the welfare of your students. I'm not sure you understand this job doesn't end when you walk out of the school gates at 3:30, because these kids take all this baggage home that they bring with them at 9 in the morning. Especially for a school in this catchment area. This is not new information I'm bringing to you. In your five years of being the headmaster, we've seen this school progressively go downhill. You remember my Cameron, don't you?

MR MYERS:

Yes, Cameron with the spikes on his hair. He was one of our best pupils.

Lucy

Now why do you think I had to pull him out of this school? His grades were failing! His father and I refuse to invest money and time in a school that doesn't care about the welfare of its students!

MR MYERS:

What you said before, you're right. This isn't new information. But unfortunately, I feel like I've done all I can. There's not much I can do for kids that don't want to help themselves. And there's also not much I can do if I don't have a support system that encourages me, I seem to be surrounded by people that penalise me for every minor inconvenience.

The blame game? Minor inconveniences? See, I thought that's where this was going. Or maybe YOU are what you surround yourself by. Have you thought about that?
