INT:
DININGROOM; AFTERNOONThat afternoon, sitting in the diner room, eating, I pulled my palms into my face.
CHARLES (V.O)
God, forgive her, I should've done better. She doesn't know the cost of her actions.
INT:
CHARLES THERAPY LOUNGE. FRECKLED KIDS' SESSIONCHARLES:
"How did the time interval training work?"
The tween's MOTHER explains, "If I tell him to do anything, he melts down. Whether it's getting him to do his homework sitting down or staying still during dinner."
She brings a 40 by 30-inch whiteboard displaying the chart with all the data. She points at various blocks while she elucidates.
MOTHER:
"126 to get ice cream, 60 for chips to play the PS4 for 2 hours, 42 chips for PS4 for 45 minutes, 20 chips for favorite big toy Hot toy 1/6 scale 12 in tall, 140 chips for a hangout day. 10 chips reward for finishing homework 14 to go outside. 180 for TV."
CHARLES:
"Keep reinforcing, time will tell," I reassured. "In another column, write how many times in his normal environment he speaks and acts out. Reçord the day and hour. I see here you have one column for p activities and the other adjacent are the tokens. On the fourth column, note how the antecedent plays out. "
CHARLES:
"It all makes sense to do. What do you mean by antecedent?"
MOTHER:
"That is the event that provokes the misbehavior. "
INT:
CUT TO ELECTRICAL STORE. CHARLES is contemplating what to buy as reinforcers for the freckled kid.CHARLES makes a decition.
I buy a portable PlayStation, Lays potato chips, and flashcards of everyday items.
INT:
BACK TO THE FRECKLED KID'S SESSION. INT: THE WAITING ROOM. where, the freckled kid plays with an abacus and bread maze toy.I sit with the 13 yr old kid. I set out the differential items in a table and allow him to grasp what he wishes. Each object is spaced out. He says in the waiting hall as I converse with his parents in the session lounge.
CHARLES:
"The point of this is to set reinforcers and gain the child's trust. Later in the reinforcers will be paired with an adult, but that will take some time. "
After those groups of meetings, I returned to the supermarket to buy a leather toolbox belt for $26.14. Here, I will place all the toys and goods that are the child's valuables into the belt's pockets. The point is to have an adult be the deliverer of things with happiness as a connotation.
INT:
CHARLES' THERAPY LOUNGE. ROBERT'S SESSION.CHARLES:
“How many times have we done this?”
ROBERT:
“What do you mean?”
CHARLES:
“Just tell me how does your story end? What was so traumatic that you are so restrained from telling me. I’m your psychotherapist. You can trust me. You can tell me. I signed a confidentiality agreement and you signed a document about several regulations to how these sessions will proceed.” I start getting anxious.
ROBERT:
He looks at me, he looks away. “Fine,” He finally says.
ROBERT CONT.
“Fine, okay, alright, alright, alright, I’ll tell you. Almost seventy neighbors heard cries for help. Screams. Nobody cared. No one did anything.”
CHARLES:
“Just tell me, what happened.”
ROBERT:
“Not one person decided to care or call the police. Detroit Police Department; DPD.”
CHARLES:
“I’m trying to help you, you're not going to grow if you don't tell someone. Stop bottling up your past and your anguish.”
ROBERT:
“That's just how people are in Detroit. That's how they are. People have dangerous, unconscionable, treacherous personalities. Your chances of being a victim of violent crime in Detroit is 1 in 51 and property crime is 1 in 23. I’ve seen statistics. The people of Detroit were handed responsibility to their community. They decided to throw away that responsibility. The city is on edge. There are inhumane, dark, tough, and painful places in the world. Detroit's one of them. 964 women in the gloomy streets of strife. All raped. 670,000 people live in Detroit. 964 raped without a second thought about it. The city is in flames.”
CHARLES:
“So, you witnessed one of these 964 women being raped outside your apartment building when you were sixteen. Now you've come here to confess about it. All these years and you never called the police department?
ROBERT:
“The police can’t keep up. I'm just glad I got that off my chest. Everyone has their times of loneliness. Everyone has experienced great loss at times.”
CHARLES:
“Took the word right out of my mouth. I’m glad we could come to a conclusion on this.” We stand up and shake palms. I internalize: Not every client is this easy to treat with their mental-emotional struggles. It seems to me he is an extremely lonely guy. He just needed someone to talk to. That simple. I almost don’t believe it.
END OF 3RD CYCLE OF SESSIONS. START OF 4RTH CYCLE OF SESSIONS. INT: CHARLES' THERAPY LOUNGE. ARMANDO'S SESSION
Armando sits with his two biceps squished in his knees. His left hand in the index and middle finger in a familiar sensation of cushioning a cigarette bud.
ARMANDO:
"Naw, I dunno. I misser so much, man."
CHARLES:
"Well, I know it's hard to stop thinking about her, so what are your hobbies?"
ARMANDO:
"The swishing f*** tha gotta do wit?”
CHARLES:
"What do you do to keep yourself occupied? "
ARMANDO:
"Hang out with da pals, smoke weed."
CHARLES:
"What else?”
ARMANDO:
"Gotta's some skateboarding friends dun town.”
CHARLES:
"Hang out and enunciate your thoughts.”
ARMANDO blows a raspberry, then adds,
"They-uh naw talk bout they feel-wings, dowg."
CHARLES:
"Then just focus on their conversation topics."
INT:
THE FRECKLED KID'S PARENTS IN THE LIVING ROOM.We let the child play for two months.
FATHER asks, frustrated,
"How the hell is my son going to face and live properly in real life if all he does is play all day?!"
MOTHER:
"It's what the therapists said. Don't scream at me."
FATHER:
"Boy, you come here and give your mom a kiss."
To the mother's surprise, her husband did not become aggressive during the request.
They watch their son make a face and push wing chairs, tables, and a couch out of his walkway to retreat to his room full of accommodaties.
INT:
CHARLES offering the freckled kid treats.I bring a tray of cookies, a glass of lactose-free milk, and a puzzle board. This puzzle board is a tiger-molded sculpture broken into four pieces by four pieces. The player's detective is to set the forms together so the lines of each mold will successfully create the figure.
I leave him to it. Now to record if he reacts to presence, I calmly pick up the puzzle and begin the process of trial and error. The child sits in a self-mindful position where his upper body is slouched, trying to protect himself from what is outside his bubble.
Snout to the nose, eyes to head, tail to read end, pass to stubby arms, and torso as the centerpiece. I finish sorting and lay it supine on the desk. The figure is a sacred tiger growling at his competition as his tail wags in the enjoyment of acting dominant.
