Hidden Figures

Synopsis: As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true life stories of three of these women, known as "human computers", we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history's greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big, beyond anything ever accomplished before by the human race, firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes.

Based on true events

Fourteen.. Fifteen..

Sixteen. Prime.

Eighteen. Prime.

Twenty.

White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia 1926

Twenty-one.

Twenty-two.

West Virginia Collegiate Institute is the

best school for Negros in the state.

Its the only school, past the eighth

grade, anywhere close to here.

Isosceles.. Scalene,

Equilateral,

Rhombus...

Trapezoid,

Katherines in the sixth grade.

They want to take her early.

Tetrahedron,

Dodecahedron.

Theyre offering a full scholarship.

All you have to do is get there.

Ms. Coleman.

Why dont you solve the equation

on the board?

We took up the collection amongst the

teachers and such,

It's not a lot.

But its enough to help you to

settle in the end.

Thats more than kind, Ms. Sumner.

If the product of two terms is zero,

then common sense says at least

one of the two terms

has to be zero to start with!

So, if you move all the terms over

to one side,

you can put the quadratics into a form

that can be factored,

Allowing that side of the equation

to equal zero.

Once youve done that,

its pretty straight forward from there...

In all my years of teaching,

Ive never seen a mind like

the one your daughter has.

- Katherien!

- Hurry on, now. Love!

You have to go.

Let Mommy take you in.

You have to see what she becomes.

HIDDEN FIGURES:

Hampton, Virginia 1961

OK! Try and turn it over, now!

Katherine?!

Mary!

Somebody!

Katherine!? Quit staring off into space!

And turn the damn car over!

I got it.

Im not deaf!

I wonder some times.

Here it goes.

- Yeah!

- It's the starter.

Its definitely the starter.

That starters startin to make us late.

Were going to be unemployed driving around

in this balloon of junk to work everyday.

Youre welcome to walk the 16 miles.

Or sit on the back of the bus.

I wont do neither.

Ill hitchhike.

Girls!

No crime in a broken down car.

No crime being Negro either.

Button it up, Mary! Nobody wants to

go to jail behind your mouth.

Ill do my best, sugar.

Not a great place for the three of

yall to be havin car trouble.

We didnt pick the place, Officer.

It picked us.

You bein disrespectful?

No, sir.

- You have identification on ya?

- Yes, sir.

Yes, sir.

Were just on our way to work.

At Langley.

NASA, sir.

We do a great deal of the calculating

Getting our rockets into space.

- All three?

- Yes, sir.

Yes, officer.

NASA!

Thats somethin'!

Had no idea they hired...

There're quite a few women,

Working in the Space Program.

Damn Russians are watching us right now.

Sputniks.

You girls ever meet those Astronauts?

The Mercury 7?

Absolutely!

Yes, sir.

We work with those gentlemen all the time.

Those boys are the best we got.

- I'm sure of that!

- Yeah!

We gotta get a man up there

before the Commies do.

- Yes!

- Absolutely.

Whole damn countrys counting on em.

Thats for certain

Hard to be of service broken down on

the side of the road, though.

Right! Right!

Well, you need a tow or somethin?

No, thank you, Officer.

I think I got it, Just give me that..

Just need a ...

To bypass the starter...

She is good in this stuff!

Thata girl!

Were all set.

Hell. Least I can do is give ya

an escort.

Imagine yall are

running late to work.

Oh, no sir! We wouldnt

want to bother you.

That would be wonderful, Officer.

Thank you so much, sir.

- Follow me!

- I'm driving!

Hurry up, Dorothy!

Before he changes his mind!

- We're coming!

- Hold your horses!

Yes!

- Mary! Slow down! Youre so close!

- Well, be quiet. He said to follow him!

He didnt mean you hit him behind!

Dear Lord..

I dont even know where to begin!

Oh! Ill tell you where to begin!

three negro women are chasing

a white police office

down the highway in Hampton, Virginia

Ladies, that there is

a God ordained miracle!

- Handsome officer!

- I'm frightened, pus!

Show me!

No, exactly!

Ascend angle:
46.56.

118 seconds.

Second stage. Success.

Korabl-Sputnik-4 is orbital.

Orbital entry is established.

Russian orbital entry is established.

Jim Webb.

Yes, Mr. President !

We certainly are, sir.

It looks like they've achieved at least

one orbit.. Maybe two!

Zvezdochka is ready to go again.

So is our comrade, Ivan.

A brave space traveler.

We have proven life can be sustained

in space.

Now, we will be first to send a human

A damn dog!

And a damn mannequin!

And then a 1.6 megaton

RDS-37 thermonuclear warhead

drops down in the

middle of Des Moines.

Well, thats a pretty big jump, sir.

What?

- Just there's that..

- Who the hell is he?

Paul Stafford.

Our Lead Engineer, Mr. Webb.

I think what he meant to say

is that speculation, at least

on our side of the equation

by definition, can be..

Just a little dangerous.

Dangerous?

You know what's dangerous,

Mr. Stafford?

Inaction, and indecision.

Russians have a spy

satellite lapping the planet,

taking pictures

of God knows what!

The President is demanding

an immediate response.

No more delays.

Alan Shepard, John Glenn, your uncle Bob.

Doesnt matter,

just get us up there, Harrison

We cant justify a space program

that doesn't put anything in space.

How did that feel in there, Paul?

Do you think you enlightened

the Administrator?

No! He didnt look enlightened to me.

- He look enlightened to you, Sam?

- Not particularly.

And just so you know, hes not

wrong about what he said in there.

You know that, right?

Because now that they can get up there,

a bomb will follow.

Thats what happens to all our good ideas.

Imaginary still.. Wait!

Wheres the machine?

Any day now, Mr. Harrison.

- Any day now.

- Yes, sir.

Whats it called?

- The initials...

- There. IBM.

International business machine.

Space is a business!

I need a mathematician.

- Ill put in another request, sir.

- Another request.

Jesus Christ! We dont have

a single person, in this entire building,

that can handle Analytic Geometry?

Thats what Ive been told.

Well, tell me something else, Ruth.

Like were going to find such a person

before the Russians plant a flag

on the damn moon.

Ladies! ladies!

If you're retarded, you don't get

Mrs. Simone,

And if you don't get Mrs. Simone,

you don't have a job.

Eleanor. Data Reduction, Building 202.

Date Reduction?!

Well. Youre welcome to join the

charmers in Magneto-plasmadynamics.

Oh! No, maam.

Thank you, Data Reductions just fine.

- Mary.

- Present.

The Mercury 7 prototype

has arrived for testing.

Mr. Zielinskis requesting you.

For permanent assignment.

- Are you serious?

- Get moving.

Oh! Thank you, Jesus!

- Thank you, Jesus! Oh! Thank you.

- Mary!

Keep it inside, hon.

I'm sorry, Dor

All right, Mrs. late!

You'll also be splendid in script.

Mrs. Mitchell.

Were on double time this mornin, girls.

I need these calculations before lunch.

The Space Task Group needs a computer,

ASAP.

Someone with a handle on

Analytic Geometry.

We cant fill the position outta

the East Group.

Permanent or temp?

Everythings temporary, Dorothy.

- You have someone?
