ATTORNEY WELSH:
"Tell us in detail one of these occurrences,“ questions her lawyer, Mr. Walsh.
MARA:
"I would check my photos and half of them have him peeking in through a window somewhere. I went out with my friend, Adam at the central Lake National Park, and I kept looking past my shoulder. We both felt watched. When I left him to leave, I saw his car parked side, blocking the exit to Adam’s car.
And as she says this the audience sees:
INT:
LAKE NATIONAL PARK. PARKING LOTARMANDO was yelling,
'Well, Ah’m goin’ after her today. Ah, ’m goin’ an’ fetch her back. You’ve straight up done too far.'
He reaches for his jacket pocket.
ARMANDO CONT.
'Talkin’ like a negotiator, man. Course that’s yo’ humble affairs, but I like to see grit in anybody. Now you’s done say sorry and get me my girl.'
ADAM:
'Please step away. She doesn’t want you around. You frighten her.'
ARMANDO:
'What, I mean no harm.'
ADAM:
'You step aside, I’m her boyfriend, not you.'
COURTROOM SCENE CONTINUED:
Between the judge’s bench, the jury box, and the counsel tables is a large, vacant area. Lawyers will often address the judge or jury or question witnesses from this area, and you may see a podium available for the lawyers to use.
ATTORNEY WELSH walks around inside the room, presenting his case:
"The defendant assumes they are still together and acts accordingly. However, after repeated times of telling him, they are over, the defendant refuses to accept this fact, Those photos prove her recollection. "
CAMERA ON the Aarco 84 by 84 projector screen, the jury and the audience see a selfie around trees, with Armando laying his back on one at the far end.
ATTORNEY WELSH:
"Now if we zoom in," Welsh says, controlling the PowerPoint hovering over the evidence, "We observe - it is in fact, Mr. Reyes."
CUT TO SCENE:
CHARLES solitary in his personal office:I write on my notebook for each client one book with their names on the inside of the cover, to jot my notes down:
Ms. Gardener proclaims to have telepathy and pyrokinesis. She will end up in jail if she ever confesses to a bombing. She'll be glad to say it's her. More isolation will only worsen the condition.
CUT TO SCENE:
CHARLES BICKERING WITH SHAWNITA during their session:CHARLES:
"You can't just add a thought into something and blame yourself. If you truly believe a fire is beautiful, why let it kill innocents? For the fun of it? If it is anarchy as well, you said you think about capitalism, what do you have against it?" I conjure my thoughts.
SHAWNITA:
She tried reasoning her blindness, “You can put a thought on anything and it’s yours.”
CHARLES (V.O.) as we see his thinking:
How could she say that? First, you think of a plan, then you set that thought to become a reality. Thus you consistently work towards that goal with each step. Those jumps create forward momentum. That momentum creates a feeling of meaning in your gut as you strive for a finished product. The final piece is the reward itself, not any monetary value or additional benefits. If you can get all those checked off, you have yourself a passion.
CHARLES:
“That’s step A,“ I say, “Now you need to put it into practice.”
NEXT CYCLE OF SESSIONS: 1ST SESSION:
Armando sits down with me at our 45th meeting.
CHARLES:
"So, she went to court and filed the restriction order, I saw this coming," I commented.
ARMANDO nods glumly at the ground, saying, "She flirted with many at once, seeing what sticks, bitch. She told the judge I reached for something in my jacket.pocket."
He pulls out a metal ball spiked as if it were a porcupine shell.
ARMANDO:
"I was gonna throw under the guy's car, hoping it pops a wheeler sum- thin, but naw man."
CHARLES:
"Well, you made the right choice."
2ND CYCLE, KAMILA SESSION:
I start off the discussion with the book, The Art of Not Giving a Shit, and of Witty Small Talk. I show her the self-improvement novel.
CHARLES:
"It is all about coming to terms with all of the inevitable unimportant impromptus in chatting, then choosing not to care about insolent people. IIts how to break the resilience to the awkward feeling of talking to others and how to fill in unresponsive talkers. I am assigning it to you. 5 chapters a day."
The book is orange with simple black lettering and one blood mark.
THE OFFICER tells me her mother has locked all sharp objects in the garage and she is not allowed there.
CHARLES:
"Any toys or sharp makeup supplies? " I say
KAMILA:
The girl responds, not upset, but calmly amending my comment, " first off, I am 13 and I can handle my makeup supplies and scent skin lotions. "
CHARLES:
"Anything dangerous, I mean," I say, restating my suggestion.
CHARLES:
I dig in for her opinion, "What do you do besides school?*
KAMILA:
"I paint."
CHARLES:
"Is that relaxing for you?"
KAMILA:
"..."
CHARLES:
" do you enjoy it?
KAMILA:
"Yes. "
CHARLES:
"Then keep at it. Now, do you have friends? "
KAMILA:
" … "
CHARLES:
"Talk to one person. Just one a day. A different person a day. Or once a week if that is too much. The human mind downsizes us when we are outside our comfort. So dumbfounded about what you are doing, It's new or different, your mind will try to stop you. It's a neanderthal's response to the unaccustomed and curious things. "
2ND CYCLE. FRECKLED KID'S SESSION: iNT: WAITING ROOM OF CHARLES THERAPY BUILDING.
The freckled kid walks in with her mother.
We tried getting him to sit down but he felt whining and resisting his mother's arms would be enough to be left alone.
MOTHER:
"Want candy? " her mother insists.
FRECKLED KID:
"Nwaaa! "
The child flounced out of the room after Mom let's go.
CHARLES:
"Let him be for now," I say.
She frowns.
CHARLES CONT.
"How did the timing go?"
MOTHER:
"We set 20 chips for ps4,12 to go to the park, five for one piece of sweets, 15 for the telly, ten for one hour of whatever action figures."
The talk spans one hour and I write it all down.
CUT TO LOERINE'S SESSION. 2ND CYCLE. CHANGE SCENE.
When I see Loerine, her blonde hair turns orange from the sun in small streaks. She smiles, honestly this time. Her eyes are predominantly sky blue, but her striations in the iris are a neutral blue.
LOERINE:
"Hello. '' with the E, a RE note, and the O in a MI note.
LOERINE CONT.
"My father was distant, " She says while her left leg swings to the other one.
LOERINE CONTINUED
"He would smile, but I only saw rage in his eyes, I could tell, if I flinched wrong, he would kill me. Just as this natural instinct is to kill Saudi Arabs and Pakistanis."
CHARLES:
"Apart from the military, is he racist?"
LOERINE:
"How can you tell a bad guy from a civilian over there? Sometimes they used children as bombers."
