Whatever.
JACK:
Jack leaves Bryan alone, and then Bryan summons the entire group together.
BRYAN:
Wait, one of us is missing.
VERONICA:
I know who you’re talking about. Maybe Shaun got caught back there?
Suddenly, the other four become alarmed. Is it possible that one of them could be dead, already?
CURTIS:
Shoot, there’s only five of us.
JACK:
That isn’t good at all.
BRYAN:
VERONICA:
Then that must’ve been him.
For a few moments, the group is completely silent in terror. And then AMY REYNOLDS loses it.
AMY:
(Looks hysterical) We’re all going to die.
BRYAN:
Calm down. That isn’t helping anything.
AMY:
What are we going to do?
BRYAN:
Like I said, we need to go scale the mountain first. (Pauses) What are each of your strengths? Like, what are you good at?
JACK:
I guess I’m fast.
CURTIS:
I’m strong. I worked as a security guard for a club before.
VERONICA:
I can throw knives.
Amy shrugs.
AMY:
My hearing. I can tell if something’s close to us or not.
BRYAN:
I’m strong too. (To Curtis) Though not as strong as you are.
JACK:
But how are we going to use our strengths? I mean, there’s five of us against TEN of them.
BRYAN:
I guess we’ll just have to outsmart them or get rid of them one at a time. But first, we have to see where they are. (To the others) Come on, let’s go.
And the other people follow Bryan towards the largest mountain that’s inside the arena.
INT. LOWER MOUNTAINSIDE-HEADING NORTH-DAY
Now about a hundred feet high along the side of the mountain, the five remaining people scan the valley below them with their eyes.
They hide behind a large bush.
JACK:
(Becoming impatient) I don’t see anything.
BRYAN:
Just wait. I’m sure they’ll show up sometime soon.
And surely enough, the alpha wolf is the first to emerge into an open area of the valley below the people.
The wolf doesn’t see the people but instead, continues on north inside the valley.
Soon after, the other nine wolves emerge, following the ALPHA, which is almost twice the size of the second largest wolf in the pack.
CURTIS:
(Eyes the wolf in awe) That thing is HUGE.
BRYAN:
I can’t agree more. We need to stay as far away from that animal as we can.
VERONICA:
So what do we do now?
BRYAN:
I say we head south.
AMY:
(Whimpers)
I hope they never find us.
BRYAN:
The game is only 24-hours. We never know. We could all get out of here without ever having been spotted by any of them.
VERONICA:
Hopefully.
BRYAN:
And I think we should head back into the valley. That way, the wolves can’t spot us up here in the mountain.
Bryan and the others turn towards the other direction, and they begin to travel back down the slope, heading south at the same time.
INT. VALLEY-NEAR CENTER-DAY
The five remaining survivors head in the opposite direction of where the wolves are headed, with Bryan leading the group.
AMY:
(Whines)
How far do we have to go until we reach a safe location?
BRYAN:
Like I said earlier, we don’t know if there is a place where we can comfortably hide inside this arena.
AMY:
(To herself)
If only this was a dream.
BRYAN:
It’s real. So get with the program. Unless you want to die out here for sure.
VERONICA:
Wait, we haven’t gotten to introduce each other yet.
For a few seconds, everyone is quiet, and then Bryan is the first to speak.
Bryan introduces himself, and then the others do so also.
BRYAN:
So now that we got the formalities out of the way, is there anything else that I should know about you guys?
JACK:
What do you mean by that?
BRYAN:
I mean, like, are you guys good at working as a team? Are you cooperative?
Jack shrugs.
JACK:
I don’t know. We’re all criminals, so I say we might have a problem when push comes to shove.
BRYAN:
As I said, I didn’t commit any crime.
The others laugh, all except for Veronica, who simply looks at him curiously.
VERONICA:
BRYAN:
Absolutely.
JACK:
Well, we have no proof of that. So, we can’t trust you.
Bryan says nothing.
The group closes in on the center of the arena as the boulder where they were previously restrained in is in sight.
Bryan looks at Veronica angrily.
BRYAN:
(Snaps)
Back at you. I can’t trust you either.
JACK:
Then we all have a problem.
BRYAN:
What we have to do, is work as a team.
JACK:
But I said that’s going to be a problem.
BRYAN:
No. What I’m saying is that we get used to working as a team, and then we might get used to teamwork and therefore be able to work with each other as a result.
Veronica points at the boulder, which is situated in the center of the arena.
VERONICA:
Isn’t that the rock where we were all tied up at?
Bryan squints at the boulder, which is located about three- hundred-feet away from the group, behind a series of tall trees.
BRYAN:
Yes. I see it. And?
VERONICA:
I’m just trying to pinpoint our location. I mean, I didn’t see anything near the rock. So, we probably have to go much further.
BRYAN:
You’re right. And we don’t have much time.
VERONICA:
What do you mean by that?
She stares at Bryan.
For a couple of seconds, he’s in thought, preparing his answer. Then he speaks.
BRYAN:
I’ve heard that the game makers would often change things up before the people inside the arena had time to hide.
VERONICA:
But we don’t know that they’ll do that for sure.
BRYAN:
Well. It’s likely.
Veronica looks up at him doubtfully.
She keeps at his side, and is apparently attracted to Bryan.
JACK:
(Acknowledges) I think he’s right.
Jack seems to be calmer than before.
CURTIS:
Why?
JACK:
Because we’re headed in the opposite direction of the wolves. Since the game is only twenty-four hours, if the game makers don’t decide to change things up, then we might have a chance to all make it out of here alive.
BRYAN:
And from the first two games before us, that hasn’t happened yet.
Suddenly, Veronica appears to be alarmed.
VERONICA:
Wait, what if some of the wolves decided to go in another direction? I mean, we saw ten of them heading north.
BRYAN:
There seems to be only about ten of them.
A look of relief envelops around Veronica’s face. She smiles and then she looks serious again.
VERONICA:
That’s good, but only if they don’t head back south.
BRYAN:
Which they probably won’t, unless the game makers decide to interfere with us.
Even as the others begin to grow more calm, Amy seems to be losing it.
AMY:
I can’t stand this anymore.
Bryan looks at her, confused.
BRYAN:
What do you mean? We’re making progress.
AMY:
(Complains)
We’re still stuck in the middle of the forest with nowhere to hide.
BRYAN:
Well, we’re making progress since the clock is ticking.
JACK:
He’s right again. We’re getting closer towards the end of the game, and we’re all still alive.
AMY:
Except for the one who got killed in like thirty seconds.
BRYAN:
We had nowhere to hide.
JACK:
But now that the wolves are not even close to us, we have a chance.
The group keeps on heading south.
INT. VALLEY-HEADING SOUTH-DAY
Bryan and the other four people pass near the boulder, which is in sight.
BRYAN:
The boulder is a good marker for where we are.
JACK:
I totally agree. We need to know where we’re headed in order to stay alive in this game.
VERONICA:
(Looks at Bryan)
Are you comfortable being around us?
