A New Map for America.
Still 50 States with New State Boundaries
Summary:
I will present my creation of new state boundaries in the USA to better match the changes in population, economics and communication that have evolved in the last 246 years in this country. This chapter will include the following information:
-A history of the state boundaries and how / why they were formed.
-The growth of the USA in the last 246 years and how we have outgrown the original state boundaries.
-Pride and Prejudice. The biggest reason people will fight changing the state boundaries.
-Areas that are currently actually talking about changing their current state configurations.
-The benefits to changing them. Economics / Fair Representation / Efficiency.
-My version of a new map of the United States is listed below.
When our Founding Fathers created the United States from the 13 colonies did or could they have envisioned the growth of the USA across the entire continent. Maybe if they had they would have included some mandatory changes in state boundaries every 50 years or so?
The current state boundaries have been around a long time. In school or if you have watched the History Channel you may know how these state boundaries were formed. Well, I think it is time we changed those boundaries to match the modern United States that we live in.
Is there a point that is reached when a state is too big to govern itself? California, Texas, New York and Florida have a combined population of over 100 million people, almost a third of the entire country? Do the residents of Southern California have much in common with San Francisco or those in Southern Ohio with Northern Ohio? Do all the residents of our states get equal treatment from their respective state governments? In my opinion they do not.
Is it fair that the area known as New England represented by the States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island should have 8% of the U.S. Senators when they have .05% of the country’s population in an area no bigger than Georgia? How can we pass legislation to correct many or our most distressing problems in America when Senators from a few states can stop any legislation before Congress?
The Founding Fathers had no possible idea that one State would ever have 336 million people or the USA would be 3,000 miles wide. If these great men could have seen the tremendous growth of the country, I truly believe that if the Founding Fathers had the ability to envision the growth and expansion of the United States that they would have included some kind of re-districting clause in the Constitution. Unfortunately, they did not, so it is time we made some changes, some big changes.
So how would we do this?
A new map of the United States of America is on the next page that shows the reconfigured state boundaries that I think would better serve the people of the entire United States.
Here is a brief description of all the state boundary changes I recommend:
1.The New State of New England is formed through the combination of the States of Maine, New Hampshire & Vermont. The Capitol would be Bangor.
2.The State of Connecticut would absorb the State of Rhode Island. The Capitol would be Hartford.
3.The State of New York would be divided in two portions. The dividing line would be a line extending from Northern Pennsylvania across New York. The area in and around New York City would become a separate State with NYC as the capital. The rest of middle to northern / upper portion would retain the name New York State with the Capitol in Albany.
4.The State of Maryland would absorb the State of Delaware. Annapolis would be the capitol.
5.The State of Pennsylvania would be divided into two states. Eastern Pennsylvania with the capitol in Harrisburg and Western Pennsylvania with Pittsburg as the capitol.
6.The State of Ohio would be divided into two states. Northern Ohio with Cleveland as the capitol and Southern Ohio with Columbus as the capitol.
7.The State of Florida would be divided into two states. South Florida with Miami as the capitol and North Florida with Tallahassee as the capitol.
8.The State of Wisconsin would gain the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
9.The State of Illinois would lose the far west portion of the state to the States of Iowa and Missouri on a line extending down from the Quad Cities to East St. Louis and further lose the southernmost portion to the State of Kentucky. The Capital of all four affected states would remain the same.
10.The States of North Dakota and South Dakota would combine to form the new State of Dakota with Bismarck as the capitol.
11.The current State of Texas would lose the far western portion to the State of New Mexico. The Panhandle of Texas would be incorporated into the State of Oklahoma. The remainder of Texas would be divided into two states, East Texas with Galveston as the Capitol and West Texas with Austin as the Capitol.
12.The entire Northwest portion of the states would change. The State of Idaho would be absorbed into the States of Washington and Oregon. The State of Montana would be absorbed by the States of Wyoming and Washington. The state capitols of the surviving states would all remain the same.
13.The State of California would become three separate states. Northern California with Oakland as the capitol, Central California with Sacramento as the capitol and Southern California with Riverside as the capitol.
