The Engineer

Synopsis: The Engineer is about an electrical/mechanical engineer, Steve (Jake Gyllenhaal) graduated top of his class at a U.S University. He is a meek and humble unassuming man and a brilliant student and a math wizard. He learned AutoCAD in less than three days. After graduating from electrical engineering, Steve applied to the same school as a professor while studying mechanical engineering and later got married to Stacy Pence and had a daughter they named Anna. While still studying mechanical engineering, Steve invented a very useful electronic device for homes. He showed his prototype to his best friend Carlito (Matt Jones) who later betrayed him and stole the prototype and sold it to a big firm in need of a new invention/s. Steve files a copyright infringement notice by submitting the blueprints of his work as evidence. Steve losses since he never made the effort to copyright his invention. Steve and worked in many small and big engineering companies in several states for 19 years, and the

Disillusioned for losing his job, Steve has become a chain smoker and drunkard. His wife Stacy, now a CEO of a prestigious company, is alarmed since it is affecting her job. She urges Steve to stop drinking and advises him not to waste his time by doing something worthwhile. Maybe God has other plans for you, Stacy says.

Considering his wife’s advice, Steve gradually kicks his drinking and smoking habit in about two months, and after regaining his self-confidence, Steve launches a very ambitious project that many scientists and brilliant engineers have tried and failed: conquer gravity.

Being a math wizard, Steve uses his mathematical ability to design a plane that uses no fossil fuel but very powerful electromagnets. This could be accomplished, he thought, by using the neodymium magnet, the most powerful natural magnet. Steve thought that if the magnets are made thin but strong and rotated at very high speed, and the polarity can be mechanically reversed when it is in close approximation or near alignment with the earth’s North and South Pole - in less than a microsecond - lift up can occur. To minimize shaft heat without using oil, the engine’s thrust shaft must float on a neodymium magnet too with a considerably larger shaft to bearing clearance. Evading heat-seeking missiles is no problem too since the plane generates no detectable heat. Steve thought.

The CAD drawings of Steve's anti-gravity flying machine look like just any other jetfighter, the difference is it is simpler and has three engines, two at the front and one near the tail end. The engine can be tilted up or down at an angle or shifted down for vertical takeoff and landing. It can fly at a 95% speed of Mach 12, based on his calculations, out-flying even a Mach 10 heat-seeking missile.

One day, while Steve is still thinking on how to further improve the functionality of his invention, Steve is startled by a rock, wrapped in paper, smashing his front window. He reads the note that says that his invention puts his and his family’s life in great danger. Steve is aghast for he never thought someone has been spying on what he is doing. He suspects Carlito is the culprit.

Being a very cautious man, Steve instructs his wife and daughter to pack up pack-up immediately.

As they were about to leave at 5:00 AM the next day, armed men sprung out of nowhere with blazing weapons demanding that Steve surrenders the blueprints and design calculations of his invention. Steve comes out of the house and while he is about to hand them the documents, five of the attackers fall down one by one shot by CIA snipers led by CIA chief Jeffrey Miller. Four of the attackers survive and escape. One, a woman, was identified later as Olena Kuznetsov a KGB Team leader. Steve and Anna are critically wounded from the crossfire.

Under heavy military escort, Steve and his family are rushed by the CIA to a military hospital. When Steve and Anna, recuperated from their wounds, Steve and his family are flown to Jackson NASA Headquarters 7 hours away. where Rey Thompson, NASA chief engineer, is waiting for them. NASA has all the copies of Steve’s documents, courtesy of the CIA.

With Steve’s collaboration, NASA built a prototype of the invention and made many improvements and one is on how to start the rotation of the magnet-operated engine. NASA completed the prototype within seven months and then asks one test pilot to fly it at Mach 10. NASA personnel present in the test flight are all impressed including NASA engineer Rey Thompson for it was a monitored test flight.

Since the life of Steve and his family are still in danger, they are escorted by agents to a waiting plane bound to an unknown destination when suddenly shots rang out. CIA, FBI and DHS agents are able to repulse and kill many enemy agents but three are able to escape. Two government agents are killed. while Stacy is slightly wounded. Two paramedics rush to help Steve, Anna, and Stacy board the plane which is to be escorted by three U.S jetfighters.

In the middle of their flight, the U.S. jetfighters shot down five unmarked jet fighters after they fail to respond to warnings. Upon reaching their destination, Steve, Stacy and Anna are immediately airlifted to a military hospital.

The end of the story shows Steve’s family on a beachfront where Steve embraces his family and whispering to his wife’s ear: this is indeed God’s plan for me.
