REVEAL:
time passes.Kat exits the French doors to the outdoor Balinese style garden patio, turns on her Pottery Barn lanterns and sets the table with pink placemats, glass plates and pink glittery handled forks. Melody Rae serves the dinner while Kat plops down in one of the two black Adirondack chairs strategically placed on each side of a round glass patio table detained by a modernistic wrought iron frame. A glittery, translucent pink vase displaying a bouquet of pink and purple orchids, hydrangea, carnations, and tulips was the centerpiece of the table.
KAT:
Steven gave those to me as a two month
anniversary present. He-e-e’s a keeper.
With fork in one hand and wine glass in the other Melody Rae takes one rich bite after another, and then speaks in a Guy Fieri style voice.
MELODY RAE:
A funky kind of flavorful sweetness
discovered here in Kat’s little off the
beaten path cottage; a messy and magical
melt-in-your-mouth explosion for the
senses—true love for the taste buds.
KAT:
Who are you?
MELODY RAE:
Guy Fieri!
KAT:
Uh, don’t give up your day job.
They both laugh.
MELODY RAE:
It’s just so good, right?
KAT:
Heaven.
MELODY RAE:
Just the word I was looking for.
KAT:
So, tell me about Peter.
MELODY RAE:
Well...
(beat)
He was, in fact, the most difficult one for
me to get over, a lot more painful than
Kyle. He broke my heart, Kat. He seriously
broke it in half.

Melody Rae is opening a letter addressed to her, from her Uncle Cormac, from Ireland. Tears are rolling down her face. A large check for twenty thousand dollars is included with the letter.I’m wanting you to do what you are good at, love. As Joseph
Campbell said:
“Follow your bliss.” Think on it my dear. Inever told you this (though I told your mum) you were my
idol. We shared a true love for animals, we did. You were
always needing them as much as they were needing you.
An Irish blessing for you, young lady: “May your pockets be
heavy and your heart be light.”
All my love—Cormac

Wow. It totally thinned out in here.
MELODY RAE:
Don’t worry, it’s early. Things usually pick
up about eleven.
DEREK:
That late? Jeez.
MELODY RAE:
Yep. Wanna shoot a game of pool to pass the
time?
DEREK:
Sure.
MELODY RAE:
But I should warn you, I’m good.
DEREK:
No way! Serious? You actually play pool?
MELODY RAE:
Heck yeah, I play. I have six brothers. Of
course I play. I also play basketball,
football, baseball, and I bowl. Uh, yeah.
Don’t mess with an only girl raised with
boys.
DEREK:
I won’t.
(beat)
Well, cool then. Let’s do it. And don’t hold
out on me, Melody Rae. I want to see your
best moves, girl. You know, I’m gonna bring
it.
MELODY RAE:
Fine, bring it!
Melody Rae struts to the table.
DEREK:
Hey, would you mind if I called my friend
Peter to join us? I told him I’d invite him
out for a drink the next time I went out.
Oh, and he enjoys pool, too. In fact, he
brings his own cue stick. He’s sort of a
pool aficionado.
MELODY RAE:
Sounds like it. Yeah, I mean, absolutely,
invite him. Why, not, the more the merrier,
right?
Derek calls his friend Peter, using the payphone down the hall, and then approaches the bartender and procures a pool game. Then he pays for their drinks and sets up the pool
table. They play a few rounds of pool, and then Melody Rae sits to take a sip of her cocktail. As she lifts her glass, an unusually tall guy wearing a tipped-up baseball cap charged into the pub and anxiously approaching the bar counter. From the back he identically resembles Willie.
Melody Rae closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.
DEREK:
Hey...it’s Peter. You’re gonna like him.
He’s a character, and a charmer.
Melody Rae smiles artificially and then shakes her head. Derek exits toward the bar counter, approaching the gentleman who just came into the pub wearing the tipped-up baseball cap. When the guy turns around Melody Rae’s mouth drops open, noticing his baseball cap has a Budweiser logo inscribed on it, and he’s holding a beer. She guzzles her drink and seizing her cue stick begins abrasively coating the tip with chalk. When Derek taps her on the shoulder, she turns around cautiously.
