DWIGHT:

You saw Woody Allen’s Purple Rose of Cairo,

right?

MELODY RAE:

Of course! One of the most brilliant films

he ever did.

ERIC:

Totally! I knew you’d get it. It’s so

inventive. The blur between reality and

fantasy in such a surreal fashion…pure

genius.

MELODY RAE:

I just loved watching Jeff Daniel’s

Character walk off the screen into the

theater. Oh my gosh, and the best part was

(CONTINUED)

when the actor playing him on screen leaves

the film and approaches the real him and

tries to convince him to go back into the

movie.

DWIGHT:

(jumps up)

Yes!!!

The sliding door opens as Shay, Patrick, and two lesbian girls (holding hands) exit the patio doors, completely nude. They step down into the sunken hot tub and begin whispering to each other while intermittently glancing over at Melody, Rae, Dwight, and Eric. Shay begins laughing while leaning in and caressing Patrick on his shoulder in an obvious flirtatious manner.

Dwight and Eric give each other incredulous looks. Melody Rae looks away pretending not to notice.

BRIAN:

Only until you can afford your own place.

MELODY RAE:

I know.

(beat)

Don’t worry. As soon as my financial aid

comes through I’ll find a place. I already

found a job at dog grooming place nearby.

BRIAN:

Ohhh, good job, Mel. K. Now don’t bother

me I have a show coming up.

Brian exits toward an open back room. There are large canvas acrylic paintings stacked up against the walls.

LOU DAWSON—(Shay’s lover) 25, Mexican American, short, pudgy, bald, arrogant, scruffy bearded misogynistic, playwright wannabe.

Shay is on the patio, on the phone and smoking Kretek clove cigarettes.

SHAY:

Lou, my life sucks. I can’t seem to get a

break.

Melody Rae begins dumping out cigarette butts from various ashtrays on the patio into a small trash bin she is carrying.

SHAY:

It’s the healthy kind, ya know?

Melody Rae shakes her head and walks inside.

He takes an exaggerative long drag from his cigarette and then blows it toward the back of her head.

INT. Dive bars, movie sets and theaters.

REVEAL:
Shay is now sporting an earring in his left ear and has grown his hair long, wearing it in a ponytail. He is seen hanging out with his new openly gay friend, Lou, at gay bars, on the set of movies playing extra’s with no dialogue in B-movie action scenes. Lou is continually picking his teeth with a noticeably worn toothpick.

Melody Rae, Shay and Lou attend a movie premiere. She witnesses Shay staring at Lou in a longing way, laughing and touching him in a feminine manner.

EXT. CORNER OF LOU’S APARTMENT IN SAN FRANCISCO.

SHAY:

(on a pay phone)

Hey there, Milkshake (chuckle). Listen, we

still have so much work to do on this

screenplay. I mean producers are totally

interested. It’s gonna be a big deal.

MELODY RAE:

(in bed, barely awake)

Who is we?

SHAY:

Me and Lou.

MELODY RAE:

Of course.

SHAY:

So anyway...I’ll be staying here for the

night. I mean it would be kinda ridiculous

for me to take a taxi to the other side of

town just to have to turn around and head

back in a few hours.

MELODY RAE:

Right.

SHAY:

So...night.

(hangs up)

REVEAL:
Melody Rae answering her phone out of a dead sleep many nights in a row. Each time she nods her head and hangs up. Sleeping alone, night after night.
