KAT:

Yes you did. Now continue...I can take it.

MELODY RAE:

Of course, you can take it. You didn’t date

him.

KAT:

This process is about letting go, right?

Maybe by reading it, you can accept it and

put it behind you.

MELODY RAE:

Good point. Ok-a-a-ay. Fine. Here goes. Best

at:
friendship. Weaknesses: repressed,

obsessive, rigid.

KAT:

Whoa. Yeah, no kidding, Sherlock. Okay,

that was totally right on. That was so how

you were with him—eerie. Now, I’m gettin’

creep-ed out. I’m so glad this is not about

me.

They both begin to giggle.

MELODY RAE:

Why are we laughing?

KAT:

I have no idea.

Kat’s giggling eventually induces coughing. They both end up in a deep full-blown giggle fit. Kat’s six-year-old daughter, Brooklyn, peeks her head out through the banister of the stairway.

KAT:

I’m sorry sweetie, did we wake you?

Kat stands and proceeds to walk up the steps, picks up Brooklyn, whispers into her ear and carries her back to bed.

Melody Rae leaves to freshen up in the bathroom. They both return to the kitchen at the same time.

MELODY RAE:

What?! Is Brooklyn already back to sleep?

KAT:

Of course, just call me super mom.

MELODY RAE:

Um, I will...super mom.

KAT:

Okay, this is too fun. I don’t know if you

realize this, but by you rehashing your

past relationships, you’re helping me

(CONTINUED)

to understand my own.

MELODY RAE:

Oh nice, I worried I was being selfish.

KAT:

Tonight, you’re allowed to be. Especially

since that’s usually my role and tomorrow

I want it back.

MELODY RAE:

C’mon, I see the way you’re a mom. You are

not selfish at all.

KAT:

Oh, trust me, I’m very selfish. But this

night is not about me. Let’s continue. Which

guy did you date after Tony?

MELODY RAE:

Willie.

KAT:

Serious? But didn’t you meet him in

Redding?

MELODY RAE:

Yes. Actually, after Tony left me, or we

left each other—depending on whose

perception you take—I was forced to move

back with my parents, who were living in

Redding. That’s about the time you and I

met? I’d just enrolled at Shasta Community

College for the spring semester to take a

few night classes in business. I was

twenty-six and had procured a job working

at Bow Wow’s grooming salon. I was the one

that hired you as a receptionist, remember

that?

KAT:

Yes! I couldn’t believe I got the job,

honestly. I had no experience.

MELODY RAE:

True, but I liked you immediately. And it’s

(CONTINUED)

not merely about how much experience a

person has. It’s the substance of who they

are inside that makes them something on

this earth...and their sun sign. At least

that’s what I read somewhere. Well,

honestly, when we connected instantly; I

knew we could easily gossip and at the time

that was all that was important. And, Kat,

I know you didn’t feel qualified, but

neither did I! Seriously, this was the first

time I got to be a manager. I had only been

an assistant when I worked in San Francisco.

I never had to manage an entire staff, until

then. I suppose I was ready for the

challenge. Remember how I was only working

part time hours? It didn’t pay well, but I

loved the job...probably because I only

worked five hours a day. I remember I

couldn’t stop talking about how I was going

to have my own salon someday. Do you

remember me talking about that?

KAT:

Do I remember that? How could I forget? When

did you not talk about opening your own

salon? I learned to just tune you out because

it got really annoying. Well, after you met

Willie, then he was all you talked about.

You couldn’t stop talking about him. He

totally distracted you from your future

plans. Wasn’t he the one you had sex with

in the bushes outside a public bar?

MELODY RAE:

Well yes, but seriously?! That’s what stands

out to you?

KAT:

Sex always stands out to me…or up to me.

(with index finger signaling

upward)

MELODY RAE:

Your mind is always in the gutter.

KAT:

You were the one that said that it was clear

he was from Texas because everything is

bigger in Texas.

MELODY RAE:

Fine. I guess you could say, at the time, I

was desperately seeking a big Willie and I got

one.

MELODY RAE:

What’s this for. It’s not my birthday.

I know. Just a little something to help you

Melody Rae opens the box. Inside is a bottle of Calvin Klein’s Obsession perfume.

MELODY ARE:

Suzie! This is expensive!
