INT. BADER’S ROOM - DAY (NOTEBOOK STYLE)
Bader, a 9-year old boy, is sitting on his bed, wearing a red t-shirt with the letter T colored in black shorts and glasses. The room is drawn in a notebook style.
BADER (talking to the camera)
hey guys my name is bader Zamalano and First of all, let me get something straight - this is a journal, not a diary. And I know what it says on the cover. When my legal Guardian annie Baltic went out to buy it I specifically told her not to buy anything that says “diary” on it. But this just proves that , she doesn’t understand anything about kids my age.
Bader holds up the front cover of the journal, which reads “Diary.”
BADER (CONT’D)
Anyways, let me introduce you to my life.
CUT TO:
INT. BADER’S LIVING ROOM - DAY
Bader’s family is sitting on the couch, watching the TV.
BADER (V.O.)
I have an older brother named Slim Z. He’s 14 years old and he always makes fun of me.
SLIM Z:
(snickering)
Hey Bader, watcha writing in your diary?
BADER:
It’s not a diary, it’s a journal.
SLIM Z:
(sarcastically)
Oh, sorry. Your precious journal.
BADER (V.O.)
And then there’s my baby sister Shaikha. She’s only one, but she already messes with my stuff.
Shaikha crawls towards Bader and grabs his pen.
BADER (CONT’D)
Hey, give that back!
ANNIE:
(from off-screen)
Shaikha, give Bader his pen back please.
BADER (V.O.)
And i’m only writing in this because one day when I’m rich and famous, I’ll have better things to do than answer people’s stupid questions all day long.
CUT TO:
INT. NEWS STUDIO - DAY
A news anchor, JIM, is sitting at a desk, holding a microphone.
JIM:
So, Bader, can you tell us about your childhood?
BADER:
(rolling his eyes)
Here’s my journal. Now shoo shoo.
Bader holds up his journal to the camera and waves it back and forth.
FADE OUT.
BADER (V.O.)
And lastly, there’s my best friends Everleigh labrant and Caleb Johnston.
CUT TO:
INT. PLAYGROUND - DAY
Bader is playing with Everleigh and Caleb.
BADER (V.O.)
Everleigh Labrant is a 10-year old girl. She’s always been by my side since Kindergarten. She’s tough, smart and cool in her own way.
EVERLEIGH:
(to Bader)
Hey, you wanna come over after school? I just got a new video game.
BADER:
(excitedly)
Oh, that’s awesome! Thanks, Ever!
BADER (V.O.)
And finally, Caleb Johnston. He’s also 10, but he’s more laid-back and silly.
CALEB:
(pretending to be a superhero)
Have no fear, Caleb is here! Your friendly neighborhood superhero!
BADER (V.O.)
So yeah, that’s my life in a nutshell. But you know what’s funny? Everyone always thinks I’m so smart and mature for my age.
CUT TO:
INT. BADER’S ROOM - DAY (NOTEBOOK STYLE)
BADER (talking to the camera)
But truth be told, I’m just like any other kid my age. I like playing video games, watching tv shows Being on my phone and eating junk food. And don’t even get me started on school.
Bader crumples up a piece of paper and throws it at a trash can. He misses.
BADER (CONT’D)
All in all, life is good. I may not be rich or famous yet, but one day, I know I will be.
Bader grins at the camera.
FADE OUT.
INT. CAR - DAY
Bader is sitting in the back seat, wearing his backpack and looking out of the window. Annie Baltic, is driving him to school.
ANNIE:
(smiling)
Are you excited for the first day of school, sweetie pie?
BADER:
(rolling his eyes)
Please don’t call me that, Annie.
ANNIE:
(chuckling)
Sorry, sorry. Just trying to lighten the mood.
BADER:
(sighs)
I am excited, but I’m also nervous. What if my teachers are mean, or I make a fool out of myself in front of everyone?
ANNIE:
(patting his hand)
Don’t worry, sweetie. You’ll do great. And even if you don’t, that’s okay too. Just remember to be yourself and have fun.
Bader nods and looks out of the window again. As they pull up to the school, Annie turns to him with a big smile on her face.
ANNIE:
(excitedly)
A group of high school students nearby overhear Annie and burst out laughing. One of them, a senior named JASON, shouts to Bader.
JASON:
(mockingly)
Bye bye, sweetie pie! Have a great day!
The other students join in on the laughter, making Bader feel embarrassed and ashamed. Annie, oblivious to the situation, drives away.
BADER:
(under his breath)
Thanks a lot, Annie.
He takes a deep breath and opens the car door, determined to face the first day of school with confidence.
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY
Bader walks nervously down the crowded hallway, looking for his classroom. Suddenly, he hears someone calling his name.
EVERLEIGH (O.S)
Bader! Over here!
Bader turns and sees Everleigh waving at him from across the hallway. She’s wearing a pink backpack and a big smile on her face.
BADER:
(excitedly)
Ever! Hey!
He runs over to her and gives her a big hug.
BADER (CONT’D)
I’m so glad to see you! How was your summer?
EVERLEIGH:
(grinning)
It was amazing! My family went on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. What about you?
BADER:
(sighs)
It was fine, I guess. Just a lot of hanging out with my family.
Suddenly, Caleb pops up behind Bader, scaring him.
CALEB:
(grinning)
Boo!
Bader jumps and turns around to face Caleb.
BADER:
(laughing)
Caleb, you scared me! What’s up?
CALEB:
(excitedly)
Not much, really. Just happy to be back to school and see my besties again!
BADER:
(nodding)
Same here. It’s good to be back.
The three of them walk down the hallway together, laughing and talking as they make their way to their first class.
BADER (CONT’D)
So, have you guys seen any new movies or played any cool video games over the summer?
EVERLEIGH:
(grinning)
Oh yeah, I got this new racing game that’s so much fun. You should come over and play it sometime.
CALEB:
(excitedly)
And I saw this new superhero movie called “Thunderman.” It was so awesome. You guys have to see it.
BADER:
(nodding)
Dude, that sounds amazing. Let’s plan a movie night or something.
Suddenly, the school bell rings, signaling the start of class.
EVERLEIGH:
Uh oh, we gotta go. See you guys later!
CALEB:
(grinning)
Bye, besties!
BADER:
(waving)
See ya!
As they go their separate ways, Bader can’t help but feel grateful for his two best friends. With them by his side, he knows that the first day of school won’t be so bad after all.
FADE OUT.
INT. GYM CLASS - DAY
Bader, Everleigh, and Caleb are sitting on the bleachers during gym class.
Bader:
"So guys, if there's a rank of popularity about 1 to 200, where would you put yourself?"Caleb:
"Is 200 good or bad?"Bader:
"I would put you guys around 154. Mark, I would put myself around 19 or 20. I might even have a shot at the top spot by the end of the year if things go my way. I think they will."Caleb:
"Well, who's at the bottom?"Suddenly, the weird kid Henry Bowers walks up to them.
Henry:
"Hey guys, wanna see my secret freckle?"Henry pulls up his shirt, revealing an unsightly mole.
