Breda opens her eyes and gives a little shiver. She
disengages herself slowly from Eoghan.
He looks at her and smiles.
EOGHAN:
Listen, I...
Breda leans in quickly and very deliberately shuts him up
with a kiss.
BREDA:
I have to go home now. Goodbye.
She picks up her BAG and Billy's JACKET but doesn't see the
ANNIVERSARY CARD and leaves it behind as she steps out of the
BOAT. She walks on along the bank away from him.
148 EXT. STREET - DAWN 148
Breda doesn't look back. She puts the JACKET around herself
for warmth as it has started to lightly drizzle.
A COUPLE IN THEIR SUNDAY BEST pass by and give her an odd
look.
Breda doesn't care and gives them a smile and a nod.
She walks on and pulls the jacket's collar up around her
face. She smells Billy's after shave off it.
Her smile gradually disappears.
149 EXT. STREET - LATER 149
Breda passes by the shop with the LINE OF FEMALE MANNEQUINS
in the window, who wear smiles and nice dresses. Without
stopping, she GLANCES at them briefly and for some reason
this makes her feel very upset. But she is not going to cry.
She walks on, a steely look in her eyes.
150 EXT. TOWN - EARLY MORNING 150
Billy staggers across the square, lost in his own world, his
eyes squinting against the rising sun.
We HEAR CHURCH BELLS in the distance.

151 E XT. STREET/CANAL BANK - EARLY MORNING 151
Billy walks, as straight as he can, on down the street.
Another MASS GOING COUPLE shoot him an odd glance.
Billy keeps his head down, ashamed to be seen by anyone.
He dodges up onto the canal bank.
BILLY:
(to himself)
Nothin' ever hard about me. Nothin'
ever...
He reaches the BENCH and slumps down into it.
He LOOKS OUT at the water and the LONE CRUISER.
152 INT. FARRELL HOUSE/BATHROOM - EARLY MORNING 152
Breda lies perfectly still in the bath. There is not a ripple
in the water. She looks to her PURPLE DRESS on the floor. She
closes her eyes.
153 INT. HALL - MORNING 153
Billy steps inside and shuts the door. He sees his crumpled
JACKET hung up on the COAT STAND.
He LOOKS along the hall.
154 INT. BATHROOM - MORNING 154
Breda HEARS his FOOTSTEPS trudging up the corridor.
155 INT. BEDROOM - MORNING 155
Billy stands, leaning in the doorway and looks at the empty
marriage bed. He slowly shambles into the room and drops to
h is knees. He wipes blood from the cut on his forehead.
He HEARS a LITTLE FOOTSTEPS behind and turns to SEE Edel
STARING at him from the corridor. She still has the MOBILE
PHONE in her hand.
EDEL:
Da, what happened to ye... Da?

Billy LOOKS to Edel but then buries his head in his hands.
Her eyes fill with tears at the sight of him.
EDEL (CONT'D)
Where's Ma?
BILLY:
Don't know... Don't know.
Billy LOOKS UP to see James upset, bewildered little face,
appearing behind Edel.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Jaysus son... I'm sorry... Edel,...
I'll always mind ye....
James is frozen to the spot as if he can't quite take in what
he's seeing.
EDEL:
Ye shouldn't get so...
(losing her temper)
GET SO DRUNK DA!!!
Billy nods and sinks back away from his daughter.
The two children turn to SEE their mother, in her BATHROBE,
arriving beside them.
BREDA:
Come on, the two of ye's, come
away.
EDEL:
No! What happened... It was your
big night and... Something
h appened.
BREDA:
Lookit love... Please!
EDEL:
(indicates Billy's wound)
No! What happened to ye? Were ye in
a fight?
BILLY:
(to Edel)
Had and accident... Fell over...
Didn'd mean to...
(back into himself)
Nothin' ever hard about me.
BREDA:

Edel breaks into floods of tears. Breda grabs the hands of
both her children and pulls them away from the scene.
Billy WATCHES his two very upset children and his wife leave
him alone. He closes his eyes to fight back the tears, and
wipes a trickle of blood from the cut on his forehead.
He opens his eyes and LOOKS up at something above him.
The PAINTING of the bright sunny sky and field of long grass
with the GROUP OF PEASANTS gathered around it.
Nothing moves in it now.
Billy continues to STARE up at the PAINTING.
BILLY:
Makin' me sick... All this in
me.... Want to see her... So I can
tell her...
Breda, comes back in and closes the bed room door. She looks
to her husband for a moment and gathers herself.
BREDA:
They're in the sittin' room...
They're...
BILLY:
I know... I'm sorry, the state of
me...
Billy struggles to his feet.
BREDA:
Listen to me Billy, after
tonight... listen to me now-
BILLY:
- I'm so sorry... Should have come
home for the dance... Was goin'
to... But this 'Mad as a march
hare' feelin' gets hold of me....
BREDA:
Doesn't matter... Listen to me-
BILLY:
- Had to see it through... Had

Billy eyes fill with tears. He can't go on. He sinks back
down to his knees.
BREDA:
What... Go on... Please...
BILLY:
I... Breda... It's so...
BREDA:

BILLY:
Never been able to so... The other
