eyes and exhales, a tension leaving his body. A smile appears
on his face and he looks up into the sky.
41 INT. FARRELL HOUSE/HALL/KITCHEN - DAY 41
Billy comes in the front door, now clearly in great spirits.
He goes into the kitchen as Breda serves up Edel and James
t heir dinner and takes his place at the table.
BILLY:
(smiling)
How are we all doin'?
Breda gets up to get Billy his dinner.
Edel and James don't respond.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Breda, why didn't ye tell me that
our kids had lost their voices...
I'll just have to say the magic
words.... 'Playstation games and
loads of sweets!'
JAMES:
Yeah, I want the new Crash
Bandicoot game -
EDEL:
No way, I played it, it's borin'.
BILLY:
(with cod gospel choir
voice)
Did ye hear that... They can
talk... Thank the Lord God above!
My kids can talk again!
EDEL:
Da, you're real silly!
Breda places his dinner in front of him. He digs in.
BILLY:
Jaysus that's a grand bit of meat.
Did ye get it in Walsh's or-
BREDA:
Yeah, Walsh's.

Breda WATCHES her family.
Billy is beaming and eats hungrily. James and Edel are
contentedly picking away at their own dinners.
Billy LOOKS to Breda.
BILLY:
Eilish left Tony standin'.
BREDA:
- Oh I heard. I'd love to have seen
his face.
EDEL:
Who are ye talkin' about, Da?
BILLY:
None of your business, young one.
Billy CATCHES Breda's eye and gives her a wink.
Breda is pleased but puzzled at Billy's sudden good mood.
Breda stands at the window and WATCHES as...
Billy, at the wheel of the van, leans across Edel and James
to shut the door.
Breda raises her hand, ready to give them a wave goodbye, but
her family don't see her as the van pulls out onto the road.
Breda cleans up the DINNER PLATES.
She stops and STARES at the HALF-EATEN SUNDAY ROAST.
She is sorely tempted to take a piece but resists and puts it
away in the fridge.
Breda sits working on a SEWING MACHINE. She is stitching the
purple dress material. Other pieces of the material with
dress patterns pinned to them lie around. She stands and pins
one of the patterns around her shoulders to check the
fitting.

She pauses from her work and LOOKS out the window to the
CUT TO:
We SEE James' reflection in the water. He holds the 'CRASH
BANDICOOT' GAME and is eating CHOCOLATE.
We SEE that he is standing in an OLD BARGE that is moored to
the bank. He stares down in to the water, deep in thought
w ith a little frown on his face.
BILLY (O.S.)
James, get away out of that!
James looks up to SEE Billy and Edel approaching him.
James steps off the barge and onto the bank.
Billy and Edel pass by a MAN who is untying a ROPE from a
BOLLARD.
BILLY (CONT'D)
(To Edel)
Jaysus, how often have I said it to
him!
The Man overhears Billy and looks up briefly before hopping
onto his boat. Further up, PEOPLE are fishing.
Billy and Edel are now standing alongside James. Behind them,
there is a GROUP OF DRY-DOCKED BOATS that have seen better
days.
Edel indicates a LIFE BUOY floating in the canal, where it
has obviously been tossed in by vandals.
BILLY (CONT'D)
Shockin'.
EDEL:
That's why ye had to jump in that
time.
Billy crouches down and points his finger at a spot in the
water.
BILLY:
Yeah... Just over there, lads...
Edel is beaming as she obviously loves to recall her father's
deed.

BILLY (CONT'D)
What age was I?
EDEL:
Fifteen and a hero!
BILLY:
(almost to himself)
Yeah, a hero I was... For the week
anyway's... All around this town.
Billy stares out into the water.
The Man in the boat pulls away from the bank and Billy
watches it as it moves away, gathering speed, until it turns
the first bend in the canal and is out of sight.
46 INT. FARRELL HOUSE/KITCHEN/SITTING ROOM - EVENING 46
Breda and Eilish sit drinking wine at the kitchen table.
EILISH:
I don't know why you're even
botherin' with this stupid weigh in-
BREDA:
Ah look it-
EILISH:
- You don't have to prove yourself
in front of Yvonne and her crowd,
ye look amazin'.
BREDA:
Yvonne's been real good.
EILISH:
Yeah right.
Eilish shoots her eyes to heaven.
BREDA:
Ah, look it, I just want to get
back to the way I was... Ye know,
before the kids and that.
Eilish moves to the back door to light up a CIGARETTE.
EILISH:
Christ, Cliff made a comment on my
weight one time... That was the
start of it... Listen I won't brown
jealous insecure...

Just to say, gettin' on that plane
away from him was the best thing
t hat I ever did...
BREDA:
Well it's great to have ye home.
Eilish is quiet for a moment and then looks to Breda.
EILISH:
At least Billy will never be like
that.
Breda gives her a look.
BREDA:
No.
EILISH:
I mean he's... Look it, next
Saturday, the two of ye's go out
for the anniversary, ye have to.
It's about f***in' time you
reentered the pubs of this town...
BREDA:
I know... It's just... I started to
dread goin' out... Thinkin' that he
just wanted to be with the boys or
that I was some sort of...
embarrassment...
EILISH:
Would ye stop....
BREDA:
Or maybe that was all in me head...
Oh I dunno.
EILISH:
Come on now, Breda... Ye were so
good together ... I mean... What
happened?
BREDA:
(shakes her head)
I don't know... things just seem
to...
They HEAR the BANG of the front door.
EILISH:
Look forward now girl, not back.
Two tired looking children arrive into the sitting room and
slump down onto the sofa. Billy follows in after them as
B reda and Eilish come out from the kitchen.
