Fittest on Earth: A Decade of Fitness Page #10

Synopsis: The 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games were a grueling five-day, 15-event test to find the fittest man and woman on Earth. "Fittest on Earth: A Decade of Fitness" follows the dramatic story of the top athletes who qualified and competed and offers an inside look at what it takes to be among the world's elite athletes, both in training and on the competition floor. The CrossFit Games challenge competitors to perform intense physical tasks, but the hardest part is sometimes mental. Athletes often learn the details of the events only minutes before they begin, and everyone handles the pressure differently. Which of these fierce competitors will rise to the top and earn the title of Fittest on Earth?

to go to the crossfit games

Is going to be

the biggest threat.

I don't think that there is

one particular person.

I think that you can't

underestimate anyone.

there are

a lot of contenders.

There are a lot of very fit,

very strong girls out there.

So when I'm out there

on the floor,

The only thing I can worry about

is myself.

all those guys

showing up to the games,

They're there to win.

And to win, they've got to beat

everyone else,

And I'm one of those people

that they have to beat.

So I look at it like they're

trying to take it from me.

this event

is pretty simple.

Just stop the gas and see

how long you can hold on.

The woman who currently has

the overall lead,

The defending crossfit games

champion, katrin davidsdottir,

But only by 12 points

over sara sigmundsdottir.

look out though,

katrin is gonna smash this one.

we're underway, and

the crowd already on its feet

Knowing what

they're gonna see here,

If they blink,

they're gonna miss it.

I was like, okay,

this is pure crossfit.

This is like,

you can't make any mistakes

Because then you're just

screwed.

stop for a second

on that workout,

And it's gonna cost you

a couple places.

it's one where you're just

gonna set yourself on fire.

The pace is go, and the pace is,

if you slow down,

These people around me are

so good, they're gonna pass me.

And a lot are gonna pass me,

So you need to go for broke,

go berserk.

it was crazy,

it was a street fight out there.

everyone on their feet

here, sager five to go.

He's back in the lead.

Now here's fikowski!

the crowd

was just going nuts

Because everyone was so close.

the man they call

"the professor"

Gets across the finish line

In dramatic fashion

to win the event!

it's like a cartoon slip

and your feet are up in the air.

If you didn't slip,

you weren't running

hard enough to the finish.

davidsdottir

and sigmundsdottir,

These two heavyweights are

trading some big punches here.

Katrin and sara battling it out.

One is gonna win the event.

Everyone was going crazy

and saying their name.

This is the workout

where you can't look around.

Tear and go, just like

pick it up over the shoulder.

I started realizing, "come on,

tia, you've got to go."

this is a battle

that started last year,

And this war is gonna

carry over into Sunday

As tia toomey finishes ahead,

brooke welles is in,

And there's sara sigmundsdottir.

tia, when the lights

were kind of brightest,

Really, really,

really shone

And really kind of announced

to everyone,

"no, I'm not going to go

quietly into the night."

where did she come from?

Toomey just does that.

katrin davidsdottir

Will finish seventh

in the event.

So tia toomey looks like she's

gonna have the overall lead

Heading into Sunday.

All right? Yeah.

It's like you can't make

any mistakes.

Think I got three no-reps

in the d-ball.

They cost me a lot.

All we're doing now is we

turn the page again,

Now we look forward.

It's what can you do

in this moment right now

To prep yourself for tomorrow.

Anything we do in the past

does not help that.

Yeah, ask me about

the start of Sunday, bro.

--let's talk about this one.

So, like,

when it's Sunday morning,

I'm almost like sad

that it's over.

Last day.

It's the last day, man!

It's the last day.

I'm excited!

Almost over,

my year's almost over.

you're in the lead.

Yeah. Not for long after

those handstand walks.

I'm gonna be so happy not to eat

after this weekend.

Oh, my god,

I'm so over this sh*t.

Just have to see

what dave brings.

I was dreaming about

all the exercises that are left.

Thrusters, bar muscle-ups,

ring muscle-ups, pistols.

So the big question is,

what is dave gonna bring?

Pretty much a nail-biter.

Me and fraser,

Nail-biter right now.

get past today.

My wife this morning goes...

"jacob, you can still

Do really well today."

She's like, "except for fraser."

She goes, "you can win

every event

And you still

will not even come close."

I was like, ah,

thanks for the encouragement.

the biggest question

we had was,

By how much was

mat fraser going to win?

just like you want before

Like the biggest day

of competition of your life,

I didn't get a wink of sleep.

you wake up,

and you're like,

You got to make

the most of this day.

It's the last time

you're gonna get to work out

At the 2016 crossfit games,

you better make the most of it.

And this handstand walk's

gonna be fun.

Sunday, it just rolls on

and I just wanted it to be over

Because you're putting yourself

under so much strain, really.

I've held on for so long.

And then it just gets

like I just lose it

Towards the end, like, you know.

All of the fun stuff is left.

So this day will be really good.

Let's stop filming now

'cause there's other athletes.

You'll probably want to

delete that after today.

No way, man.

It'll be like, "this b*tch is

not worth my photo."

did you bring

your leader jersey?

They gave me

that bloody leader jersey,

And I was like, "ugggh, great."

I hate it, angel.

I think it's so cursed.

It's not cursed.

What are you talking about?

How long have you been

wearing it?

- after this

first workout--

-don't get it in your head.

-No, it's already in my head.

-No. That's part of the fun.

Can you just merge

into everyone else

So I can pretend you're filming

everyone else and not just me?

yes.

Sunday morning,

The mixed competition

Was extremely tense.

First through third was only

separated by 12 points.

Tia in first place,

katrin second,

And then sara sigmundsdottir

in third.

the fifth and final day

of competition for individuals

At the 2016

Reebok crossfit games

And it's time to decide

Whose skills will pay the bills.

Day number 5 starts

With a brisk walk

on their hands.

it was hard because

there were like holes.

You went into a hole,

you're like, "oh, no!"

trying to balance again.

when I kicked down,

I was in first in that heat,

And then I got called back and

it was a fight to the finish

Because my arms went out.

I hit

the little red guy.

Can't fall down,

you have to back up,

So trying to stay on my hands

and trying to walk

And I kept it up there.

and davidsdottir

gets there just ahead

Of kari pearce, and she

Is gonna pick up 50 points.

And tia toomey is towards

the back of the pack,

And she's gonna watch

her overall lead disappear

after this event.

Right next to her

is sara sigmundsdottir.

katrin was the only woman

To finish the entire

handstand walk unbroken.

- there goes mat fraser...

- -oh, my goodness!

...Who's catching up

with jacob heppner,

And jacob heppner

will take this heat.

Now, mat fraser,

he will finish second.

We were pretty dumbfounded

By what he did in

the handstand walk,

But that paled in comparison

To what he did

in the suicide sprint.

last year

there's two runs,

And I think I got

dead last on both of them.

- That sucked.

- I up.

what happened?

I'm not a good sprinter,
