Fittest on Earth: A Decade of Fitness Page #6

Synopsis: The 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games were a grueling five-day, 15-event test to find the fittest man and woman on Earth. "Fittest on Earth: A Decade of Fitness" follows the dramatic story of the top athletes who qualified and competed and offers an inside look at what it takes to be among the world's elite athletes, both in training and on the competition floor. The CrossFit Games challenge competitors to perform intense physical tasks, but the hardest part is sometimes mental. Athletes often learn the details of the events only minutes before they begin, and everyone handles the pressure differently. Which of these fierce competitors will rise to the top and earn the title of Fittest on Earth?

And just yanked me back,

like swam over me,"

And I was like,

"yeah, that sucks."

And she was like,

"and I know it was a man,

Because how strong they were."

Next day in the athlete area--

not going to name names--

That man came up to me like,

"my god, that swim was ruthless.

At one point I just

grabbed an ankle

and pulled them back."

I'm like, "shh!

Don't tell anyone that."

Like that is a bad story.

murph--

it is a hero workout

That's done in thousands of

crossfit gyms across the world.

And for the first time,

The fittest athletes

in the world

Will be doing it here

at the crossfit games.

two years ago, I knew we

were going to come to the ranch.

One year ago, I knew we were

going to do murph again.

I say that because as soon as

we did murph last year

And all the commentary,

Everything that happened

with it happened,

I said,

"we're binging that back."

kara webb collapsing

Into the arms

of anna tunnicliffe,

Who's trying to get her water.

They're calling

for medical staff

To come over

and check out kara webb.

I didn't want my story

to end like last year,

Overheated, and that was

the last time you did murph.

I kind of wanted

to rewrite that a little bit.

this is more

than an event today.

it absolutely is.

It's one of the most famous

hero workouts that we have,

And everyone has done this.

I'm not gonna lie, not having

an american win it in 2015

Was a bit of a bummer.

from iceland,

gudmundsson will take

Event number three, murph!

murph is a hero workout

Named after a seal

who was killed in action.

Josh bridges, well-known

games athlete, former seal,

Didn't compete at the games

in 2015,

So couldn't give bkg

a run for his money.

he crushed it,

so you can't take

anything away from him.

He went out there

and destroyed that workout.

When it's a hero workout named

after a former navy seal,

You know, who, for me,

it's just something

Near and dear to my heart

where, like,

All right, an american

should win this workout.

Yeah, he did well, but in 2016,

I wasn't going to allow him

to do that again.

I'm not here

to take second

in this workout.

I'm not here to take third.

I'm not here to take top five.

I want to win this workout.

I want it to be

a dominant performance.

But, of course, first mile,

Guys are going out

like a six-minute pace.

You can't win in the first run,

but you sure as sh*t

can lose it.

jacob anderson

before the workout said,

"I'm gonna win

that first mile."

I'm like...

"you get it, man."

And sure enough,

coming to the stadium,

He passes me, and he's like,

"I'm gonna win this first mile."

"get it, man. Get it."

you could see

the dividing line

where the shade was.

As the sun started to come up,

More of the field would be

covered in sunlight.

Half the field is in the sun,

half the field had shade.

And it was first come,

first serve for the lanes.

I ran as fast

as I could on that first mile

Just to get a good spot

in the shade.

I'm gonna play it smart,

I'm gonna go three lanes in.

The shadow's not going to move

15 feet in the next 20 minutes.

It did.

And when he announced

that it was like partitions,

I was like, great, there was

even more fitness to it.

You just got to go faster.

all the other girls

were like,

"oh, this is going to be

so much harder

'cause we're going to have

to go so much faster."

In my head I was like, "we don't

have to go faster, okay?"

We can just take our time

if you really want

'cause I'm up for that

if you want to do that.

We can do it

but just do it slowly.

Some of those guys like

josh and mat, they smoked it.

You couldn't watch them.

If you tried to see

whereabouts they were

And keep up with them,

you'd kill yourself.

bridges

done with round one

And back for round two,

and if he read the description

That we just had on the screen,

I'm sure that would have

motivated him as well.

He doesn't like to be told he's

the oldest and the shortest.

He's gonna use that as fire,

had he seen it.

the best part about being

an older athlete,

Being around for a while, is

that you know yourself so well.

You have the data,

you have experience.

You know when you should break

and when you shouldn't break.

the thing

that stood out the most

about josh bridges in murph

Was he kept going back

to the pull-up bar

And did every set

of 20 unbroken, which

He makes look easy,

but when you try that

At that fatigue level,

that was incredible.

josh bridges is done

And he is on to his second

and final one-mile run,

And he looks like he is

well on his way

Towards his eighth career

event win at the crossfit games.

I never got to meet

michael murphy,

But when you become a seal,

you form a brotherhood

with these people.

Just knowing that

we'd been through some

of the same things together,

And then knowing his story

and what he did

Was super special for me.

You can watch it,

you can hear other people

Say how tough it's gonna be

all you want,

But until you actually

experience it,

You don't know what

those athletes go through.

And just last year I remember

telling myself

That I just gained so much more

respect for the athletes

That come here year after year.

It's a lot more demanding than

anyone can ever imagine.

I remember I was just

like in my own world.

I didn't know where anyone was,

I didn't care.

I just wanted to go

as fast as I could.

And as I ran down that runway,

everyone was cheering for me

And I could hear them, like,

they were so elated for me.

Because it was more than

the placing, it was the effort

And overcoming

what happened the year before.

And I just couldn't get

the smile off my face.

there's nothing better

than watching josh bridges

win an event,

Just for the celebration

that comes out of it.

It is a tremendous thing

to watch

Because there's nothing

fabricated about it,

There's nothing planned

about it.

It is raw emotion

just from his heart and soul

That is pouring

out of his face and mouth

And you can feel it.

just coming into

the stadium felt really good.

You know, knowing that I did

what I needed to do.

You know, there was no way,

like I said,

I could let anyone else

win that workout.

I was excited

About the squat clean ladder,

But in the same time,

I was also very nervous

because I knew that

Even though

I really like squat cleans,

Compared to some

of the other girls,

It's not a strength of mine.

Dave's scalp is gonna burn

with those braids.

The next event, you guys

all know what it is.

It's the squat clean pyramid.

Who thinks ben smith's

gonna win?

Who thinks fraser's gonna win?

Hey, what the hell, man?!

how about

josh bridges?

Yeah, thanks, there we go!

who thinks josh bridges

is gonna win?

--there it is.

No pressure.

Yeah, you know, you know.

-Teams and sh*t.

-That's right!

reps go down,

weight goes up,

And, man,

look at those weights.

We're ending up with

325 squat cleans
