The group’s leader stands in front of his men, fists on hips. He is a stoic and handsome man in mid-20’s of age. Bald with a pencil-thin mustache over full lips. He is dressed similarly to his men, but his breastplate is adorned with an engraving of a tree. This is PRINCE BARIN, ruler of Arboria.

He smirks coyly when he sees AURA on the GROUND untangling VINES from her SHAPELY body.

BARIN:

Welcome to Arboria, Princess Aura.

AURA:

I did not enter your kingdom on my own accord, Prince Barin. (She sneeringly glances at FLASH. Then returns an even colder stare at BARIN) Why would I? The daughter of the House of Ming does not associate with traitors or renegades.

BARIN:

And yet, you travel with strange company, my princess. A lionman and (He scoffs at FLASH) whatever mutated breed of Ming this one may be.

FLASH:

I’m not Ming’s anything. I’m from the planet Earth. Who are you?

BARIN:

Ah, I see, you are the alien I have heard so much about. Then, you don’t know who I am. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Prince Barin, the rightful ruler of Mongo. I was dethroned as a child when her father, Ming the Merciless, assassinated my parents.

FLASH:

Well, I guess we owe you our thanks for saving us from that thing.

BARIN:

Your “thanks” may be somewhat premature, earthman. You are all to be taken as my prisoners.

AURA approaches BARIN, fists clenched.

AURA:

You dare hold the princess royal against her will?!

BARIN cups AURA’S delicate chin in his gloved hand. HE RUNS a gloved finger along her jawline. It is apparent he is MADLY IN LOVE with her.

BARIN:

Yes. I’d dare anything for you, Aura, you know that. As for the other two...

FLASH:

Aura says you’re a traitor, a renegade. An enemy of Ming the Merciless...and yet, you capture potential allies instead of...

BARIN:

Hold your tongue, earthman! You know nothing of our world. Mongo is a world of untrusted enemies!

FLASH:

Separate and destroy. Isn’t that Ming’s ideology?

BARIN:

An ideology obviously effective. (A look comes over BARIN) If all the races of Mongo were to unite – and that would be impossible – they would still be helpless against Ming’s technological capacity.

FLASH:

If your emperor is so goddamn powerful, how can you “rebels” fight against him and remain alive?

BARIN:

Earthman, I appreciate your defiant nature, but you cannot change the ways of this world. Take them!

AURA places her delicate hand on BARIN’S chest. Speaks smoothly.

AURA:

Do what you will with the lionman, but let Flash Gordon go. His life means nothing to you.

BARIN:

What does his life mean to you, Aura?

AURA:

I’ll give you anything you want, Barin. (She stares at him with complete lust in her eyes) Anything.

BARIN:

Including yourself, Aura? Will you be mine if I let the earthman go?

AURA:

I swear it.

BARIN:

I’d gladly burn in the seven hells of Mongo to possess you, Aura, but not so long as you love another! I’ll end this infatuation of yours for him here and now!

He pushes her aside and raises his bow. The other FIVE ARCHERS line behind BARIN and draw their BOWS.

AURA:

No, Barin, don’t be a jealous fool!

There suddenly is the FLUTTER of WINGS. SOMETHING dashes BEHIND the ARCHERS. Their DECAPITATED HEADS roll onto the ground. BLOOD splashes from their wounds as their bodies fall.

FLASH and THUN react as – in a blur of SPEED - SOMETHING quickly grabs them FROM BEHIND and lifts them OFF THE GROUND among the sound of FLAPPING WINGS.

ANGLE ON:
We see the rapidly fading silhouette of winged men carrying FLASH, THUN, BARIN, and AURA off and up above through the ever-present overcast sky.

EPISODE 5

IN THE CLUTCHES OF THE HAWKMEN

A triumphant Wagnerian-like theme plays over OPENING CREDITS. A vast sea of stars serves as the backdrop for the main title as a roll-up slowly crawls into infinity.

Chapter Five:

IN THE CLUTCHES OF THE HAWKMEN

Leaving Dale with Thun guarding King Kala in the throne room, Princess Aura rescued Flash from the tentacled clutches of the sea beast. When the vengeful Aura deliberately destroyed the control board which kept Kala’s palace underwater, Flash rushed to the throne room to rescue Dale and Thun from the collapsing city.

Flash, Dale, Thun, and Princess Aura escape to the surface in an attempt to reach the kingdom of the lionmen but are ambushed by Ming’s army. The army is attacked by a squadron of lionmen gyro-ships which the army mercilessly wipes out. During the battle, Dale has gone missing. Searching for her, Flash, Thun, and Aura are met by Prince Barin, ruler of the kingdom Arboria. He takes them prisoners, when...

EXT. ROCK BLUFFSARBORIA - DAY

FIVE ARBORIAN ARCHERS line behind BARIN and draw their BOWS. There is the sudden FLUTTER of WINGS. SOMETHING dashes BEHIND the ARCHERS. Their HEADS are DECAPITATED and roll onto the ground. BLOOD splashes from their wounds as their bodies fall.

EXT:
SKYMONGO – DAY

FLASH, THUN, AURA, and BARIN are each carried by a HAWKMAN. Resembling humans except they have great brown and white feathered wings of hawks growing out their upper backs. Clad in nothing but bronze, goggled helmets, and black leather shorts, the other HAWKMEN carry long, chrome lances as weapons. FLASH looks worried as the group soars through billowing clouds high above the surface of Mongo. He glances over to THUN.

FLASH:

Thun! Who are they?

THUN:

King Vultan’s hawkmen!

BARIN:

And deadly enemies!

AURA:

King Vultan is an ally of my father.

FLASH:

Where are they taking us?

THUN:

To their city suspended above the clouds.

EXT. SKYCITYSKYMONGO – DAY

A fantastic establishing shot of the hawkmen’s sky city. A structure of chrome and aerodynamic steel spires situated on a massive, circular base suspended 5,000 feet above the surface of the planet by beams of pulsating light.

EXT. VULTAN’S PALACESKYCITY – DAY

In the center of the city, rising far above all other art-deco architecture is the massive chrome palace of VULTAN.

INT. THRONE ROOM – VULTAN’S PALACESKYCITY – DAY

In an expansive hall of chrome and steel, blue and silver drapes undulate in the wind as at the end of a long, red carpet sits the bloated form of VULTAN, KING OF THE HAWKMEN. A robust Viking-like man in his mid-50s. Wearing bronze and gold armor, the bearded and stout man sits on a chrome throne watching three naked women dance in front of him as a set of minstrels play stringed instrument to the side. VULTAN merrily gulps a flagon of ale and chomps into a large, cooked leg of a beast set on a table to his side.

The throne room is lined with HAWKMEN LANCERS at attention holding their spears. Several HAWKPEOPLE mill about in regal festive enjoyment.
