BARIN:

Obviously easier said than done, earthman.

FLASH:

We have a saying on earth, Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

BARIN:

On Mongo we say, What the mind can imagine, the body can do.

FLASH:

Then, you’re with me?

BARIN:

You are a brave opponent, Flash Gordon. Let us become comrades in this mutual struggle.

BARIN extends his hand in friendship. FLASH reacts and SHAKES BARIN’S HAND, nodding in approval. THUN rests his MIGHTY CLAWED PAW onto the TWO intertwined hands.

THUN:

You know I am in this with you. To whatever end.

IRIS DISSOLVE TO:

FLASH, BARIN, and THUN wearily shovel the radium into the FURNACE. They are glistening with sweat and fatigue.

HAWKMAN:

Change shifts! Get behind the lead wall!

The exhausted SLAVES shuffle behind the lead wall. They all sit on the grimy, sooty ground with their backs against the charred and pitted barrier.

The HAWKMEN savagely whip the fresh crew of SLAVES to the front of the FURNACE.

FLASH:

Thun, I need to get this thing off my leg. I’m going to attach it to the handle of my shovel.

THUN:

What for?

FLASH:

Barin, hand me that shovel. (to THUN) When the time comes, I’m going to throw the shovel into the atom furnace. (the OTHER SLAVES are paying attention. FLASH addresses all of them) Your lives depend on reaching the shelter of this lead wall. I just need something to get this thing off.

THUN flashes a growling SMILE and holds up a paw in which a long, pointy claw pops out of one of his fingers.

FLASH:

(Smiles)

Goddamn.

THUN uses his claw as a lockpick and after a series of clicks, releases the mechanism off of FLASH’S leg. FLASH clamps the DEVICE to a shovel handle.

A HAWKMAN approaches.

HAWKMAN:

Change shifts! Get up, you lazy oafs! Get up! Get to work! Move!

He lashes at the cringing SLAVES.

FLASH, BARIN, and THUN begin shoveling radium into the FURNACE.

FLASH looks about, scoping the GUARDS. He nods at BARIN. To THUN.

FLASH:

Ready, Barin?

BARIN:

Ready.

FLASH:

Run for the wall, men!

FLASH strikes his shovel across the head of the nearest HAWKMAN. BARIN jabs his shovel into a HAWKMAN’S gut as THUN leaps onto a HAWKMAN and claws at him.

The SLAVES run and JUMP behind the LEAD WALL.

FLASH CHUCKS his shovel into the GLOWING MAW of the furnace.

FLASH RUNS and vaults over the WALL.

Up in the control tower, TWO HAWKMEN watch the mutiny.

HAWKMAN:

It’s that earthman, again.

HAWKMAN LEADER:

Light him up!

The HAWKMAN throws a switch on the control board. There is a BRILLIANT FLASH followed by a RUMBLING EXPLOSION.

EXT. SKYCITY – MONGO – DAY

Underneath the floating city, one of the seven beams that support the superstructure flickers and goes out.

INT. ATOM FURNACES – SKYCITY

FLASH rolls onto his back. He GLANCES around and the FURNACE ROOM is in shambles. TWISTED MACHINERY and CORPSES of both SLAVES and HAWKMEN lay about. He sees the DOOR is blasted OPEN. FLASH scrambles over to BARIN.

FLASH:

Barin!? You still with us?

BARIN rubs his head. He has a large gash.

BARIN:

Now that was a bang.

FLASH:

Come on. Let’s find Thun and get out of here.

They find THUN’S body next to the door. FLASH shakes him.

FLASH:

Hey. Hey, Thun. You still alive?

THUN:

I’m not beaten yet, my friend.

Several SLAVES who survived the explosion shamble up to FLASH.

SLAVE:

What do we do now?

FLASH:

We get out of here. Grab whatever you can as a weapon. Let’s go find a rocketship and get off this loony bin.

Followed by TEN SLAVES, FLASH leads BARIN and THUN down a hall. They see a set of large doors. Opening them, they shield their eyes from the BRIGHT LIGHT of outside.

EXT. SKYCITY – MONGO

FLASH, BARIN, and THUN exit the building onto a BALCONY overlooking the spires of SKYCITY. The SLAVES run either direction in a FRENZIED PANIC down a flight of STAIRS or across a BRIDGE.

FLASH runs to the edge of the balcony and, gripping the chrome banister, listens intently.

FLASH:

Hey, hear that?

The distinct noise of approaching rockets can be heard.

EXT. SKY – MONGO

Fifty ROCKETS resembling B-29 bombers with finned and curved wings attached to rocket engines soar in a V-formation of five each. It is the impressive ARIAL ARMADA of MING THE MERCILESS.

EXT. SKYCITY - MONGO

FLASH, BARIN, and THUN stand on the balcony watching in awe at the approaching ships.

FLASH reacts.

Flying up to meet their attackers soar one hundred HAWKMEN armed with ray rifles. Several ride the backs of GIANT HAWK-LIKE steeds mounted with gatling laser rifles.

A massive aerial battle ENSUES! The first wave of ships tear through the spires of skycity. Their super-heated red beams cut and slice the steel and chrome of the spires. EXPLOSIONS and FIRES erupt. HAWKMEN and WOMEN scream and scatter below as chunks of buildings and SHRAPNEL rain down on them.

A HAWKMAN on the back of a saddled HAWK fires his gatling gun at a ROCKET. Several HAWKMEN swoop down onto the fuselage of the ROCKET and begin slicing it up with their ray rifles. The ROCKET EXPLODES in a fiery display.

BARIN reacts.

A HAWKMAN swoops between the spires, aims his rifle, and fires. He then flies out of the way as a ROCKET fires on him.

Three ROCKETS in formation soar between the spires, firing as they go. The buildings shatter and EXPLODE.

A HAWKMAN sits at a large laser cannon and sends off a volley, taking one of the ships down. It spins and smashes into a tower, bursting into a million FLAMING PIECES.

FLASH:

Vultan’s men are putting up a fight.

BARIN:

That they are. However, they don’t stand a chance against Ming’s Arial army!

The ROCKETS intensify their VOLLEY of ATTACK. RAY BEAMS swoop and dive about, slicing through buildings, shattering glass, and DESENTERGRATING HAWKMEN.

The TOWER CANNON we saw before fires off a volley but is then BLOWN UP by a dive-bombing ROCKET.

A squad of HAWKMEN swoop upward as a ROCKET fires on them, burning them away.

FLASH:

Okay, I think it’s time we left this party.

THUN:

Where to, my friend?

FLASH:

Since we haven’t been blessed with wings, we have to find a rocketship.

BARIN:

Just a moment. There’s another thing. Princess Aura. We must deliver her to safety.

THUN:

Aura? She’s Ming’s daughter! Have you forgotten; it is she who wanted us to be turned over to the emperor?

BARIN:

I realize who she is! I also know...I love her! (to FLASH) My passion for her is equal to that of yours to your woman.

CUT TO:

The ROCKETS continue their unrelenting attack on the skycity.

Several HAWKMEN attempt to flee, but are shot down by a pursuing ROCKET.

INT. VULTAN’S THRONE ROOM – SKYCITY – DAY

Two HAWKMAN guards stand nervously at the palace doors. We HEAR the dull thud of battle outside. PAN over to AURA who sits pouting on a chaise lounge as VULTAN dangles a piece of elegant jewelry in her face.

VULTAN:

Look. Is this not exquisite?

DALE is STANDING forlorn at his SIDE as a serving wench holding a silver tray of jewels. VULTAN reaches over and plucks a huge jade off the tray.

VULTAN:

The Eye of Zando Zan! Priceless!
