ACT I:

Scene 1

Setting:
A back dirt road in Green River, a rural, quiet, and scenic Midwestern town.

At rise:
A big black car speeds down the road. Carmen, Lily, dee, and Willy are in the car. All four parties are nervous on edge and in a hurry. All four have a .45 pistol on their side. While tommy gun rest between them ready to use if needed. The camara freezes and focuses on the inside of the car.

Narrator

The year is 1933. Due to The Great Depression and the Volstead Act making alcohol illegal, crime is rampant, everything from murder to bootlegging. A new breed of criminals now exists. Men and women who couldn’t find honest work, worked for gangsters driving trucks or working in speakeasies or dime a dance clubs. Some even made and sold booze in their own homes to make ends meet. Our friends in the car are no different, this is their story.

(camara unfreezes and car keeps driving with our focus on the inhabitants)

Dee

Stop!

Willy

What? What’s Wrong?

(willy looks at the sign and it says green river population 65. A sign below it advertised a lodging 2 miles down the road.)

Dee

This is a good place to disappear. Pull over. Let’s put the guns in the boot. As far as people hear, we are vaudeville act and going to our next Job. Don’t nobody do anything to draw attention to us.

(Willy pulls the car over and puts the car in park. All four get out of the car and proceed to hide anything incriminating before getting in the car.)

Dee

Alright now remember what I said! Drive normally and try not to stand out too much.

(willy starts the car and the scene ends as the car continues down the road)

Scene 2

SETTING:
A rustic-looking wooden lodge. With a small Dining room, a coffee bar, a check in desk, and stairs leading up.

AT RISE:
Sally is sitting at the check-in desk. Chewing gum, reading a newspaper while listening to the radio. Dee, Lilly, and carmen open the door and look around the lodge. Then look at each other.

Dee

Well, it’s not The Lexington but it will do.

(Dee walks up to the check in desk)

Hi there honey. Me and the rest of my vaudevillians here need a room for the night. You got any?

(Sally rolls her eyes slightly annoyed and bored turns the page on her newspaper and blows another bubble with her gum before answering not even looking up.)

Sally

How many rooms and for how many people?

Dee

2 rooms and 4 people

Sally

(Sally looks up, leans on the desk towards the girls and answers in a monotone voice.)

Cabins are $5 dollars a day plus $1.50 extra for the 2 extra people. Meals are included and lunch starts in 30 minutes.

Dee

2 Cabins please in the back.

Sally

$11.50 up front. Sign up here please.

(Sally turns the hotel registry towards dee hands her a pen and reaches behind her to grab 2 keys off the wall. Dee then signs the register and turns it back toward Sally. And takes the keys. Lilly and carmen are in the background looking around and finally take a seat at a dining table in the dining area.)

Dee

Thanks hon.

Carmen

This place is nice, is it all yours?

Sally

(Sally goes back to casually reading her newspaper)

No, it belongs to my pops. Been in the family for years.

Lilly

(Lilly notices some dust on some old pictures makes a face of disgust. Complains quietly under her breath while playing with the pearls around her neck.)

I can tell

(Sally lips slightly curve into a smile while dee sits down next to Lilly and elbows her in the side.)

Lilly

Owwwww!

(Lilly exclaims while rubbing her side and looking down, a sad annoyed look on her face.)

Dee

(Dee looks at Sally and smiles)

You can ignore her honey. She grew up short a few lessons in manners.

Sally

(Sally chuckles)

Don’t worry about it. You ladies want some coffee while you wait for your meal?

Carmen

That sounds great. Some cream and sugar too please.

(Sally exits the room towards the kitchen. In the background food preparation noises can be heard.)

(Willy walks in carrying an arm full of bags. Takes off his hat and sits on a chair at the table.)

Willy

I parked the car around the back. You 3 get the rooms?

Carmen

Yeah, we got coffee for now. I wonder if we can get something stronger for after lunch.

Willy

You ask?

Carmen

Should we? might draw us some attention.

Dee

Oh please! A town like this no way they aint got at least one still?

(Sally walked back in her and willy’s eyes meet. Willy gives her a sly smile and looks at her up and down.)

Willy

Well, hey there, beautiful. What’s your name?

Sally

Sally, how about you handsome?

(Dee hits willy on the knee signaling to him to keep his mouth shut about their real names, and to back off)

Dee

His name’s Charlie. You got any giggle water hon?

(Dee scoots closer to Willy as Willy wraps his arms around her to try to deter Sally and Willy from continuing their advances towards each other.)

(Sally begins to serve each of them their food.)

Sally

No but I got some suds.

Willy

Sounds good sugar. How about 4?

Lilly

So, where’s the town? Or is this it?

Sally

Afraid this it. We have a small general store and a pump gas. Our barber is also our dentist. We had a doctor, but he died. His wife treats minor injuries and such. Theres a diner in town as well. The food here is way better though. So are the suds. More men than women too.

(Sally finishes serving the food as the group begins to eat. She then stares out the window wistfully.)

The smart girls leave town first chance they get. Can’t say I blame them. Most the men her are selfish drunks.

(Sally looks down sadly then wipes her hands on her apron.)

You all need anything else?

Willy

Yeah, another order of suds and a bucket to take back to the rooms.

Carmen

And cigarettes if you got em.

Lilly

They are $.10 a pack.

Dee

We will take 4.

(Sally nods and leaves to grab the cigarettes and beer while the four continue to eat.)

You need to keep your hands to yourself with that one Willy. You have got us three to handle your needs.

Carmen

Besides strangers are just extra trouble we aint need.

Willy

Fine suppose you’re right.

(Willy leans back in his chair rather annoyed with the 3 women.)

(Sally returns with the beer and the cigarettes)

Lilly

You get a lot of visitors in this town?

Sally

Not often, you folks are the first visitors in months. Sometimes we get bootleggers that come through and make deliveries. They aint usually stick around long though.

(sally walks over by the window)

Sometimes they stop at the yellow house at the edge of town.

Willy

What’s there?

Sally

They provide the entertainment for the men folk in the town.

(Carmen and dee look at each other with a sly look in their eye.)

Dee

Thanks for the food, hon. I think it’s time we got back to our rooms and got ourselves cleaned up from the long journey we just had.

(Willy and the three girls start getting up and pushing in their chairs and grab the bucket of beer. All 4 exit the scene. The scene ends with Sally cleaning up the table after them.)
