Getcha.

BUSTER:

He squats on the porch.

BUSTER (CONT’D)

The house getchaaaaaa.

James starts running down the path winding its way through a dense stand of dark trees.

James.

VOICE (V.O.)

James stops, looks around, then starts walking.

James.

VOICE (V.O.) JAMES

I’m listening.

He keeps walking. Strange fluttering sounds come from the trees. Bright flashes pierce the darkness.

VOICE (V.O.)

James. You were right.

JAMES:

What about? I don’t want to be

right. I want things as they used

to be.

Too late.

VOICE (V.O.)

James stops. He drops to his knees and rolls into a fetal position.

54.

VOICE (V.O.)

(singsong)

Too late. Too late. You’ve done it

now. Too late. Too late.

The voice fades leaving James huddled in the middle of the path, alone.

50 EXT. UNCLE JONES'S HOUSE - DAY 50

Din and James play with a soccer ball in the yard. Din runs up, dribbling the ball, then stops in front of James. Dan watches them from the porch.

DIN:

Do you think your mom is going to

talk to you soon? I mean it’s been

three days.

DAN:

Probably not a good question, dude.

JAMES:

I dunno. I guess it’ll happen when

it happens. Uncle Jones, too.

DAN:

That’s wise. That blow-up hurt both

of them big time. Take longer than

three days to get past something

like this.

DIN:

Let’s go in. I’m worn out.

They go into the house.

51 INT. UNCLE JONES'S KITCHEN - NIGHT 51

James and Mother sit at the table, plates of food in front of them. Neither want to eat.

MOTHER:

His name in unimportant. Her name

is unimportant. It’s what they did,

not who they were.

James pushes his food around with his fork.

MOTHER (CONT’D)

He didn’t care.

55.

James takes a small bite. It sticks in his throat. He grabs his water, spilling a bit, but manages to drink and get the food down.

But...

JAMES MOTHER:

Don’t waste your time looking back.

That’s not the way you’re going.

JAMES:

Can I be excused?

Mother nods. James takes his plate to the sink and leaves the kitchen.

52 INT. UNCLE JONES'S HOUSE - NIGHT 52

James sits on the couch writing in his notebook. Din sits in a chair playing his game.

Uncle Jones comes in and sits next to James. James closes his notebook and looks at Uncle Jones.

UNCLE JONES:

You didn’t ruin your family.

JAMES:

But I shouldn’t have...

UNCLE JONES:

It was bound to happen. You

couldn’t go through life without

knowing at some point. Jake...your

mother...was trying to protect you.

JAMES:

I don’t know what’s going to

happen.

Uncle Jones pats James’s shoulder.

UNCLE JONES:

Nobody does, kid, nobody does.

JAMES:

It scares me.

Me too.

UNCLE JONES:

56.

JAMES:

I don’t want to go back. I think

mother would be happy to forget

this and go back to a life that’s

not honest.

UNCLE JONES:

C’mon kid, you gotta give your

mother a break.

JAMES:

I won’t forget.

Uncle Jones nods, understanding. He stands and opens his mouth, but there’s nothing left to say. James opens his notebook and starts writing.

FADE OUT.
