Even when we took

the coals to 'em.

Hindsight's got a way

of making fools

of all of us eventually,

don't you think?

I guess we should've paid

a little more attention

to their ghost stories, huh?

I mean, after all,

looky, looky, looky.

The masked phantom himself,

right at my feet.

Get--

[GROANS]

F*** you. F*** you, boy.

All right, come on,

f***ing dance. Let's dance.

[SQUEALS MANIACALLY]

Heh. Oh, chrissakes,

Starkweather. Come on.

[PANTING]

Listen, why don't you just

tell me

who sent you

on your little spree tonight?

Come on.

Come on, come on, come on.

Who sent you after

the little doper girl, huh?

Come on!

Whose f***ing money's

in your pocket?

Why don't you just tell me

and I won't make you suffer

like your daddy did, huh?

[YELLS]

F***!

Fine. Fine.

Have it your way.

[CRICKETS CHIRPING]

Hey, how many times...

in all of human history,

do you think somebody's

been burned alive twice?

[GASOLINE SLOSHES]

You are about to join

an exclusive club, my friend.

[CAN THUDS]

[RADIO CHATTERS INDISTINCTLY]

[FLY BUZZES]

[LIGHTER CLICKS]

[HELICOPTER WHIRRING

DISTANTLY]

[SIZZLING]

[MAN GROANS]

[SNIFFS]

OFFICER:

Last chance, big boy.

All right.

Hey.

Listen, if it makes

you feel better,

while you're burning,

you can call me daddy.

[GROANS]

[CHOKES]

[THUDS]

[HEAVY BLOWS]

[GURGLES]

[PANTING, GASPING]

[GROANS]

[SQUELCHES]

[SCREAMS, PAINED LAUGHS]

[MAN PANTING]

HENRY:

Do you know why?

If you can't see why,

it's because

it's f***ing useless.

That's why.

You burn one,

you got to burn them all, man.

Ain't no way

you gonna do that.

See, the truth is, I don't got

no idea how many there are.

I lost track.

I spent my whole life

trying to find them.

Sometimes I did.

I'm just the one

that got caught.

That's all I am.

But they're all out there.

Just walking in these streets.

I mean,

there could be thousands.

There could be many thousands.

What difference does it make?

You want answers?

You want answers from me?

You ain't gonna get them.

["HE SAYS CALL ME"

BY DI'ANN CARLTON PLAYING]

ALICE:

Now, I've got to tell you

a really dumb joke.

Something that, ah,

struck me as funny.

Um, what lays on its back

and has wheels?

A dead bus.

[LAUGHS]

Do you mind

if I have one of those?

[WITH EMPHASIS]

Do you mind

if I have one of those?

Oh.

Okay, fine.

Do you mind

if I have one of those, please?

I don't care.

Does that mean yes?

GEORGE:

Sure.

Oh, goodie.

[LIGHTER CLICKS]

Givin' your love...

Oh.

And my lover's

Been callin'...

Where's Brenda?

Now, who's Brenda?

GEORGE [LOUDLY]:

My wife!

Please, just let me know.

Let me see Brenda.

Oh, Brenda.

Oh, she's fine.

GEORGE:

What the f*** did you do to her?

[BELL CHIMES]

Just let me just see

that she's okay, Jesus.

Let me see Brenda.

[DISTORTED VOICES OVERLAPPING]

GEORGE:
Just stop it--

Listen, boss.

I'm trying to listen

to the music,

and you're being very rude.

F*** you.

Don't talk to me like that,

you little prick.

I'm a human being.

I do things right.

I try, very, very hard.

I'm a good, kind person,

who does good, kind things

for people,

and you can't just

waltz in here

and talk down to me

like that!

Got it?

Boss?

I tried to tell you...

GEORGE:

I'm sorry.

Got it?

GEORGE:

Yeah.

Boss.

GEORGE:

I'm sorry. I got it.

And now I find myself

In a corner hotel...

Oh, what's the matter

with people these days, huh?

Givin' your love away...

What happened to old-fashioned

American conversation?

Gosh, everybody's so...

defensive about everything that

nobody ever takes the time

to listen to anybody anymore.

Am I right?

Well, am I?

Yeah. You are.

Thank you.

[SONG FADES OUT]

[SCREAMS] Brenda!

Hey.

How many times

do I have to tell you,

you little p*ssy,

Brenda's fine.

GEORGE:

What the f*** did you

do to my wife?

Where's my f***ing wife?

[SCOFFS]

Didn't do anything...

I didn't do a single thing.

I'm-I'm as dangerous

as a daisy.

[LAUGHS]

You think I can make up

the kind of things he says?

Heck, I'm just a girl

from Ohio.

That's right.

Round on the end and high

in the middle,

O-Hi-O.

No, they don't listen.

Mm-mm.

They just don't listen.

And the topper,

the topper is that he--

[RECORD PLAYER WHIRLS QUIETLY]

Always says it,

and I'm always the one

that gets blamed.

Is that justice?

You tell me, is that justice?

No.

No, they don't listen.

GEORGE:

I'm listening.

You haven't really

done anything that bad.

Right?

Then you can stop this.

You can stop this all of this.

So, what do you say, huh?

["I DON'T GUESS YOU KNOW HOW

MUCH I LOVE YOU" PLAYING]

[LAUGHS]

I had to pay a nickel...

GEORGE:
Brenda!

[MOCKINGLY] Brenda!

GEORGE:
Help!

Help!

GEORGE:
Somebody help!

Somebody help!

GEORGE:
Brenda, are you okay?

[LAUGHS]

[CHAIR SCUFFS]

"Brenda, are you okay?"

[CHUCKLES, INHALES]

Oh.

Boss.

I don't guess you know

How much I love you

And I don't guess

You care

How hurt I'm gonna be

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDS]

Otherwise...

Oh, gosh.

That cut's pretty deep.

You're the one that did it.

Go get him a Band-Aid,

t-there's blood

dripping on the carpet.

[GURGLES BLOOD]

GEORGE:

You're a f***ing lunatic.

OFFICER:

No.

[COUGHING]

Don't call her a lunatic.

She's not a lunatic.

Ow! Jesus, ah!

She's just eccentric.

OFFICER:

No.

[GROANS]

[GUN CLICKS]

It's me.

I'm the one who did it.

And I can't make it stop.

[GRUNTS]

[GUNSHOT]

[THUDS]

[GUNSHOT]

GEORGE:
God.

[GUNSHOT]

No, no, no!

[SQUELCHING]

Call me...

[CRICKETS CHIRPING]

To me...

[GEORGE GRUNTS, GURGLES]

This house reminds me

of my childhood.

GEORGE:

Somebody...

[GEORGE GASPS]

[SHUSHES]

[SONG ENDS]

Ah, baby.

[INHALES]

[GRUNTS]

[INAUDIBLE LAUGHTER]

[CRICKETS CHIRPING]

NARRATOR:

So there you have it

in all its lurid detail.

Apologies if the violence

became too gratuitous for some,

or the story ended up

too ambiguous for others.

That's just the way life goes

sometimes, as the man says.

If these folks were who

Starkweather

claimed them to be,

the world would keep on

turning either way, right?

I don't know,

maybe chaos is just chaos.

Coincidence is just that.

Maybe Henry Starkweather's

just a name.

[HUMS]

DJ [OVER RADIO]:

You're now in the ranks

of Charlie Manson,

Ted Bundy.

You claim you didn't

commit these murders,

but there's enough substantial

evidence to put you to death.

How do you respond?

HENRY:

I ain't never done

nothing that nobody

didn't expect would

happen some way or another,

you know what I mean?

'Cause Henry Starkweather

ain't some oddity.

And if it weren't me,

it'd be somebody else.

It is somebody else.

It's a lot of somebody else's.

I've done bad things,

I've done awful things.

I've done truly awful things.

But I'm just one man.

It's not just me.

There's a whole family.

I'm just one man among many.

There are folks in this world,

they're living,

breathing vessels,

just like I was,

just like I am.

A vessel.

See they're walking all parts
