EXT. - FOREST - DAY
As the early morning sunlight bathes the African countryside in a golden glow, the landscape comes alive with the sights and sounds of a new day. The Hareeri tree rises tall, ancient and mystical, amidst the surrounding trees. A glimpse of blue light shines down from the sky, illuminating it directly.
WISE MAN (V.O.) “Sickness knows no boundaries; it strikes without warning, affecting us all in ways we could never anticipate. Yet, amidst the challenges it brings, there lies an opportunity for growth and resilience. It is a force that unites us, compelling us to come together in solidarity and support. How should you take part? Pay close attention to what you might see, hear, or might even know already.”
At the entrance of a hut, a close-up reveals a scene teeming with life.
In the midst of the countryside's bustling activity, a medley of sounds fills the air, creating a vibrant backdrop to daily life. Conversations overlap, their snippets floating through the air like notes in a symphony, while the distant murmur of neighbours adds a sense of community to the landscape.
The rumble of farmers' tractors echoes through fields of vibrant green and shimmering gold as they work the land with steadfast determination.
Foz strolls along the narrow pathways between huts, making her way towards a hill. Eventually, she settles down, book in hand, and immerses herself in its pages.
A shadow casts itself over her.
KOFI Hello Foz.
FOZ Hey.
He takes a seat next to her on a large boulder.
KOFI How’s your dad?
FOZ:
Not so good, but there must be something I can do. Right?
With an astonished look, Kofi gestures towards the book resting on her lap.
KOFI:
No, no, not that!
FOZ:
Why not? Tell me something better.
Doctors don’t know what to do.
(pauses)
I’m not saying this will work, but what’s the harm in trying.
KOFI:
I guess there’s no harm if you can find it. Or even if it’s real. I mean, have you ever met someone who’s even seen this tree?
FOZ:
As a matter of fact, I have, and I’m on my way to see him now.
Foz places the book into her bag, rises to her feet, and
gazes at Kofi.
FOZ (CONT'D) Are you coming?
KOFI:
What choice do I have, you’re about to see a mad man about a tree! Not sure if that’s ever worked out fine!
Kofi rises, and together they descend the hill, making their way towards a quaint village below.
FOZ:
He’s not a mad man, he’s just… different.
INT./EXT. - OLD HUT - DAY
Standing solitary amidst the village, a weathered hut, older than all the others, remains untouched by refurbishment. Atop it, a vibrant piece of woven raffia adorns its roof.
Inside, stacks of books line the walls alongside jars containing medicinal plants and dried herbs. Clay incense burners, filled with frankincense, dangle from the corners of the ceiling.
Foz taps on the entrance of the hut.
FOZ Hello, anyone home?
Mr Abshir?
MR ABSHIR Yes, come in my dear.
KOFI:
(whispering) Should we be going in?
FOZ:
Yes, but you can stay out if you want.
KOFI:
No, I’m fine, I’m coming in.
INSIDE THE HUT:
Within, they exchange greetings with Mr. Abshir, and Foz
presents him with the book.
MR ABSHIR:
Hello child. You’re still looking for that tree I see.
FOZ:
Yes, and I’m close to finding it!
MR ABSHIR:
(with glee)
Well, that’s great, was this book helpful?
He extends his hand, eager to examine the book.
MR ABSHIR (CONT'D) Did you calculate the months, weeks, and days?
FOZ I have…
Kofi leans against an old table loaded with jars and bottles, accidentally sending them crashing to the ground, shattering several glass bottles.
KOFI:
I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have leaned on that.
Mr. Abshir shakes his head in response.
MR ABSHIR It’s okay.
FOZ:
(Annoyed) Oh, come on Kofi. What have you done?
KOFI:
I’ll clear it up, just tell me what I can save Mr Abshir. Again, I’m so sorry.
Kofi takes hold of a broom and swiftly sweeps the glass out of the way.
FOZ Where was I?
(she pauses)
Yes, Mr Abshir I have studied the book and calculated the night that the Hareeri tree sprouts fruit.
FOZ (CONT'D)
If I’m not mistaken it will be two days from tonight.
MR ABSHIR:
Correct, it’s been said that you see the fruit only at night. If I was any younger, I would say let me go and find this tree!
KOFI:
(slightly concerned) Only at night, really?
FOZ:
I will do all I can to find this tree. And if it has healing powers, I need to know. It might work for my father.
MR ABSHIR:
I know dear, we would do anything for a loved one. Just be careful out there.
They step out of Mr. Abshir's hut and venture back into the
open air.
EXT. - OUTSIDE THE HUT - DAY
They briskly stride past several houses, their pace
quickening.
KOFI:
You’re really going ahead with this? Can you absolutely trust this guy? I know he’s some wise old man who’s been studying almost all his life.
FOZ:
I trust him, as you’ve just said, he knows a lot. And he’s not telling me to do anything. I’m the one who wants to see this through.
KOFI:
Fine, but I’m coming with you.
FOZ:
(sarcastically) Oh how nice of you.
Kofi gazes at her, taken aback and slightly annoyed.
FOZ (CONT'D) I’m kidding, I’m glad you’re coming.
KOFI:
You better be kidding, I’m the best.
INT. - HUT - AFTERNOON
Foz enters the hut to check on her dad. Her grandmother is seated beside him as he lies on a wooden bed, looking unwell.
Foz waves at him, and he responds with a faint smile.
FOZ:
(whispers)
Grandma? How’s he doing?
GRANDMA:
(whispers with a sad tone)
He’s hanging on.
(shakes her head)
The new medication is not working.
FOZ:
He’ll be fine, he’ll pull through.
EXT. - HUT - AFTERNOON
Foz emerges from indoors and settles onto a bench beneath the sprawling acacia tree, nibbling on a sandwich as she inquiries back into her book. With meticulous care, she tears out the pages concerning the Hareeri tree.
Kofi joins her, and together they sit outdoors, engaged in
calculating the days and months until the tree bears fruit.
FOZ:
See, there are two days to go.
KOFI:
So not tonight, not the following night, but the one after that?
FOZ:
(laughs)
Yeah. We can go tonight, you know, quietly. We need enough time to search for this fruit. We head towards East, (points to the text in the book) see… where the sun rises from.
INT. - HUT - NIGHT
Foz is on the verge of sneaking out through a window, her small backpack ready, when her grandmother catches her in the act. The clattering sounds draw the grandmother's attention, leading her to Foz's room.
GRANDMA:
(shines a torch in the room)
And where do you think you’re going this time?
FOZ:
(hesitates)
Nowhere! I was just closing my window and I thought I heard something.
Foz carefully kicks her backpack behind her.
GRANDMA:
Go back to sleep. I know what you’re up to, I’ve seen you reading that book too often.
