Salt of the Earth Page #6

Synopsis: Based on an actual strike against the Empire Zinc Mine in New Mexico, the film deals with the prejudice against the Mexican-American workers, who struck to attain wage parity with Anglo workers in other mines and to be treated with dignity by the bosses. In the end, the greatest victory for the workers and their families is the realization that prejudice and poor treatment are conditions that are not always imposed by outside forces.

00:
42: 08.950 - 00: 42: 11,630

Just took the radio.

00:
42: 11,790 - 00: 42: 14,310

sorry to interrupt

the party ...

00:
42: 14,470 - 00: 42: 18,326

... but the owner of the radio

has achieved a garnishment order ...

42: 20.251 - 00: 42: 20,880

Do not touch.

00:
42: 22.081 - 00: 42: 22,510

00:
42: 27,109 - 00: 42: 28,365

00:
42: 28,734 - 00: 42: 30.433

- Let them take her

- Passing over my dead body

00:
42: 31.284 - 00: 42: 33.781

I do not want your corpse,

or see you in jail.

00:
42: 34.404 - 00: 42: 35.518

It is yours and not

they carry.

00:
42: 36,159 - 00: 42: 38.881

If you resist will

an excuse to lock you up.

00:
42: 58.164 - 00: 43: 00.399

Gladden those faces.

We have real music!

00:
43: 13,251 - 00: 43: 14,958

But the strike continued.

00:
43: 16,237 - 00: 43: 17.336

It seemed interminable.

00:
43: 18.082 - 00: 43: 21,201

They spent four months,

five, six ...

00:
43: 22,526 - 00: 43: 24.624

The company was

without wanting to negotiate.

00:
43: 26.071 - 00: 43: 28.145

They tried to turn against

Anglo miners us.

00:
43: 30.494 - 00: 43: 34.264

They said I had to send the

Mexicans back to their country.

00:
43: 34.822 - 00: 43: 36.598

How I can back

the place where it went?

00:
43: 37.143 - 00: 43: 39.643

The barracks where I was born

is now Company

00:
43: 40,426 - 00: 43: 42.908

Why would anyone sends

patterns his people?

00:
43: 43.737 - 00: 43: 45.583

Patterns so there would

throughout New Mexico.

00:
43: 47.010 - 00: 43: 50.110

- Hopefully we will see that day.

- Jenkins is not an employer.

00:
43: 50.820 - 00: 43: 52.701

In his ilk

They let them stay.

00:
43: 53.423 - 00: 43: 55.967

You can not give the desert

Oklahoma, it would be inhuman

00:
43: 56.886 - 00: 43: 58.113

I was born in Texas

00:
43: 58.795 - 00: 44: 00.647

That would be even worse!

00:
44: 01.049 - 00: 44: 02.521

He reached the seventh month

00:
44: 03.661 - 00: 44: 05.478

The company store

he refused to serve us.

00:
44: 08.488 - 00: 44: 10,173

Box resistance

It was exhausting

00:
44: 11,604 - 00: 44: 13,551

Several families could not stand it.

00:
44: 15,999 - 00: 44: 18,049

Nobody knows where they went.

00:
44: 20.042 - 00: 44: 22.863

The union decided that

desperate cases ...

00:
44: 23.178 - 00: 44: 24.771

... should apply for a job

in other mines.

00:
44: 25.219 - 00: 44: 25,790

This was done.

00:
44: 27.909 - 00: 44: 31.832

About getting employment

helped with their pay ...

00:
44: 31.762 - 00: 44: 33.008

... for others

they could eat.

00:
44: 34.019 - 00: 44: 35.342

Ramon was not a hopeless case.

00:
44: 36.703 - 00: 44: 38.108

Only had three

children to feed.

00:
44: 39.981 - 00: 44: 42.629

Still, employers us

they would have starved ...

00:
44: 43.607 - 00: 44: 46.370

... but we received support

International, Denver ...

00:
44: 47.199 - 00: 44: 48.208

... and other sections.

00:
44: 49.678 - 00: 44: 52.233

We thought that

anyone outside the county ...

00:
44: 53.704 - 00: 44: 56.427

... he was interested in

our problems.

00:
44: 57.227 - 00: 44: 58.264

We were wrong ...

00:
44: 58.265 - 00: 45: 01.630

"Solidarity with the miners.

Construction union. "

00:
45: 04.116 - 00: 45: 06.665

Letters came from our

Southeast compatriots.

00:
45: 08.706 - 00: 45: 09.594

From far:

00:
45: 10,341 - 00: 45: 13,038

Butte, Chicago,

Birmingham, New York ...

00:
45: 14,195 - 00: 45: 15,456

Messages of solidarity ...

00:
45: 17.094 - 00: 45: 19.931

... and crumpled banknotes

men working.

00:
45: 25,550 - 00: 45: 26.622

The women were helping ...

00:
45: 27.588 - 00: 45: 29.289

... not only as cooks

or making coffee.

00:
45: 30.848 - 00: 45: 32.354

Some men mocked ...

00:
45: 33.553 - 00: 45: 34.910

... but you had to do the job ...

00:
45: 35,750 - 00: 45: 36.818

... and allow us to do so.

00:
45: 38.908 - 00: 45: 40.712

Nobody realized

the magnitude of change ...

00:
45: 41,625 - 00: 45: 42,821

... until the day of the crisis.

00:
45: 48,002 - 00: 45: 48.889

The sheriff smiled.

00:
45: 49.857 - 00: 45: 51.504

We learned that brought bad news.

00:
45: 55.255 - 00: 45: 57.171

The company had achieved a

writ ...

00:
45: 57.995 - 00: 45: 59.685

... prohibiting mining

manifest in the pickets.

00:
46: 01.048 - 00: 46: 02.949

It was based on the law

Taft-Hartley.

00:
46: 05.077 - 00: 46: 07.202

Punishable by heavy fines

and a prison ...

00:
46: 07.203 - 00: 46: 09.444

miners who disobeyed

00:
46: 10,850 - 00: 46: 12.413

You had to make a decision immediately

00:
46: 13,237 - 00: 46: 14,951

Ignoring the mandate

or do not comply.

00:
46: 18.539 - 00: 46: 19.449

If we obey ...

00:
46: 20,990 - 00: 46: 22.163

... the strike will fail

00:
46: 24,796 - 00: 46: 27.541

The scabs come

as the needle was going

00:
46: 29.472 - 00: 46: 31.078

If we disobey ...

00:
46: 33,132 - 00: 46: 34.357

... the strikers will be

arrested

00:
46: 36.216 - 00: 46: 37.450

... and the strike will fail

anyway.

00:
46: 40.710 - 00: 46: 41.746

So things are

peers.

00:
46: 45.088 - 00: 46: 47.110

Employers are we

at their mercy.

00:
46: 48.781 - 00: 46: 49.719

I want to add something.

00:
46: 51.275 - 00: 46: 52.472

Whatever your decision ...

00:
46: 53.411 - 00: 46: 54.812

... I support the International ...

00:
46: 55,600 - 00: 46: 56.721

... as it always has.

00:
46: 58.843 - 00: 46: 59.905

We are a union

democratic.

00:
47: 01.744 - 00: 47: 02.249

The decision ...

00:
47: 03.304 - 00: 47: 04.055

... is yours.

00:
47: 26.487 - 00: 47: 27,123

Comrade President.

00:
47: 28,933 - 00: 47: 29.706

If we surrender now ...

00:
47: 31.072 - 00: 47: 33.193

... and to the odedecemos

Taft-Hartley rotten ...

00:
47: 34.160 - 00: 47: 34,995

... we are fools and cowards.

00:
47: 36.003 - 00: 47: 37.693

We can only do

one thing to fight.

00:
47: 39.013 - 00: 47: 41.528

- To fight and win.

- There would win anything.

00:
47: 42.557 - 00: 47: 43.749

We would be detained

00:
47: 55.255 - 00: 47: 57.956

The men discussed.

There were great speeches.

00:
47: 59.133 - 00: 48: 01.269

Apparently Barnes

was right.

00:
48: 02.522 - 00: 48: 04.126

The company had them

at their mercy.

00:
48: 05.672 - 00: 48: 07.032

Apparently the strike

had failed.

00:
48: 08.573 - 00: 48: 09.253

Companion president.

00:
48: 11,428 - 00: 48: 13,192

If you read the injunction

carefully ...

00:
48: 14.013 - 00: 48: 16.458

... you will see that only prohibits

manifest miners.

00:
48: 18,700 - 00: 48: 20.239

women

We are not miners.

00:
48: 21.360 - 00: 48: 23,056

We will relieve you

on the picket lines.
