Scott’s Trail of Tears

We open on Scott Johnson, a nine-year-old boy dressed in a plaid button-up shirt, and wears black framed glasses hiding behind a row of lockers. He speaks directly to the camera.

Scott:
When dealing with bullying, you have two choices. You can take the abuse, the humiliation, and lose any sense of dignity you have left. Or you can hide. And in my experience, hiding is the smarter option.

Cut to Scott hiding under the bleachers in gym class.

Scott:
The bleachers are an excellent place to hide if you’re in afternoon gym class. You can see your tormentors, but they can’t see you. I’m so clever.

Cut to Scott standing in the gym class.

Scott:
A lot of times, the larger kids are too tired to partake in gym class. And the bullies won’t bother you if they can’t lift you. So make friends with a dodgy classmate, give them candy each day to keep them still, and you’ll be safe for the entire class.

Cut to Scott sleeping on the slide, with his watch alarm ringing.

Scott (voiceover):The attributes are obvious. But one time, I missed an Earth and Science test, and my parents grounded me until I got a good mark on my makeup test. So make sure you set your watch alarm.

Cut to two girls holding jump ropes, with Scott in the middle.

Scott:
Desperate times call for desperate measures.

He looks at one of the girls.

Scott (in a girly voice):I told you, I’m not an extension of Mike. My name is Georgina. Now turn the rope.

The two girls leave, and Scott sits down on the stairs, looking A little bit upset .

SCOTT:
sadly not All these methods work all the time. Right now, I take you on a very sad journey that I call Scott’s trail of tears.

Scott transitions to standing in the hallway, still wearing his plaid button-up shirt.

SCOTT:
It was right here on the first day of fourth grade I received the purple nurple from Eddie kitsus and Adam Horowitz.

Scott covers his two nipples and continues.

SCOTT:
(CONT’D)It was an ugly, ugly bruise.

Scott transitions to a scene outside, standing by a tree.

SCOTT:
(CONT’D)Joey Madison gave me the first of many wedgies. He said I would get used to it. I never did. I think he has a lot of issues.

Next, Scott is standing in the bathroom, crying on the floor.

SCOTT:
(CONT’D)Richard Franklin gave me a three-minute swirly.

Scott sobs some more and blubbers, “Can we stop the tape?”

The next scene shows Scott in a voiceover, reading from his textbook as text appears on the screen.

SCOTT:
(V.O.)Whenever you see movie where the kid has a kick-me sign on his back and think they would never do that in real life….well

While clip plays showing Scott reading a book in the hallway before Tashi, the girl who bullies Bader Zamalano, spots the kick-me sign on Scott’s back and kicks him.

Tashi:

Loser

SCOTT:
(V.O.)

It did

Scott is standing outside, still wearing his backpack.

SCOTT:
(CONT’D)You might think of it as space bagging, noggerting, turtle shelling, or bag flipping. Well, I call it my trail of tears.

While The bully unabashedly removes Scott’s backpack, opens it, and promptly drops its contents onto the ground, along with the backpack itself and He strokes Scott’s hair

Scott makes a sad face, looking down at his belongings strewn on the ground.

Scott is standing in the grass during recess, talking to the camera.

Scott:
“I hope you learned the lesson today. If I helped just one kid to escape a bully, then it was all worth it.”

Suddenly, the bullies appear behind him. Bully 1 says “Here he is,” and Bully 2 adds, “Get him!”

Scott looks into the camera with a scared expression and says “Not good.” He starts running away as the bullies chase after him.

The screen fades to black.
