Synopsis: During the 1850s, Milly (Jane Powell), a pretty young cook, marries Adam (Howard Keel), a grizzled woodsman, after a brief courtship. When the two return to Adam's farm, Milly is shocked to meet his six ill-mannered brothers, all of whom live in his cabin. TOWNSMEN streak across the stage, protesting against the Pontipees. Exit.

Scene V

Pontipee house. The boys and the girls are playing musical chairs. MILLY is holding her baby, white FRANK and CALEB stand beside her. The rest are in a circle around chairs. MILLY sings the "Goin' Courtin'" song going "da dee da".

Music stops. Everyone finds a seat except GIDEON, who falls on ALICE's lap. The boys poke fun at him, then stop when ADAM enters. They all stare in amazement.

ADAM:

What? I said I'd be back when the pass was open.

DANIEL:

The pass?

The girls flock to MILLY.

ALICE:

Oh Milly, they'll kill 'em!

SARAH:

We don't want to go back!

MILLY:

Girls, go upstairs. Go.

The GIRLS exit, looking scared.

BENJAMIN:

Come on, let's go.

EPRHIAM:

We've gotta stop 'em.

BOYS exit. ADAM holds GIDEON back for a moment.

ADAM:

Get the horses hitched to the wagon.

GIDEON:

What?

ADAM:

Didn't you hear me? Go!

GIDEON exits, leaving MILLY and ADAM. He walks over to Milly slowly, showing apprehension. He looks down at the baby in awe.

She's... what'd you call her?

MILLY (smiling)

Well, I... I was thinking of Hannah, or Hagar, or Hepzibah... picking up where your mother left off.

ADAM smiles, continuing to look at the baby.

ADAM:

Hannah.

MILLY (nodding)

Hannah.

ADAM looks at Milly, then walks back to the entrance. He stops just before exiting, then turns back to her.

ADAM:

I got to thinking up at the cabin, about the baby. How I'd feel if someone came creeping in and carried her off. I'd string him up the nearest tree. I'd shoot him down, like he were a thieving fox.

He pauses.

I thought about you too, while I was up there.

He walks up to Milly, looking apologetic.

Adam makes a speech here, but I can't find it. Will update.

ADAM wraps his arms around MILLY, pulling her into a tight embrace. He begins to kiss her, and continues until GIDEON enters. GIDEON clears his throat, garnering the attention of the couple.

GIDEON:

The wagon's ready.

ADAM:

Good. (to Milly) I'm taking the girls back.

GIDEON, in horror, exits.

MILLY:

Adam, please be careful.

Adam kisses her forehead, then exits with one last glance at Hannah. MILLY goes and picks her up, holding her protectively as she exits the opposite way.
