Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike Page #4

Synopsis: In a mythical kingdom, the mighty Imperial Knights harness a magical substance known as Aer to power their weapons and protect humanity from the monsters of the forest. But something strange is afoot. The Aer is somehow changing, causing the wilderness to waste away and stirring the woodland beasts to attack with greater frequency. As danger creeps steadily closer to civilization, two young recruits - Flynn, the rigid son of a fallen hero, and the rebellious and brash Yuri - must ride with their fellow Imperial Knights to distant ruins in hopes of uncovering the truth behind the transforming Aer. Some will not survive the thrilling journey. Some will be betrayed. If Flynn and Yuri cannot overcome their differences and learn to fight together, all will be lost for the people of the realm.

Thinking of your old man?

My father, he ignored orders.

Headquarters had stopped the attack, yet he...

People in the lower quarter were dying.

He did it to protect you and the citizens.

My father died disobeying orders!

There was nothing left of him afterward...

I don't want to make the same mistake my father did!

Our job is to protect the people who live here.

That is my duty as a Knight.

Perhaps you should wait until you've been a Knight for a while

before deciding if your old man's actions were really a mistake?

We leave early tomorrow morning. Understood?

Garista. Inform the others.

Yes, Sir.

Sorry about earlier. I didn't know Lambert had died...

No, I should apologize.

I was just shocked they refused to send reinforcements...

They never brought back my father's body.

Only a few of his personal effects.

Once you die, it's all over. There's nothing left.

That's why I don't agree with tomorrow's mission.

The monsters are practically on our heels now.

What happens if they get inside the town?

The barrier's there. They can't get inside that easily.

I'm with the captain on this one.

We asked for reinforcements in the first place

because it's too much to handle on our own!

It's our duty to wait!

More people will get hurt if we do.

I've had enough of people dying!

It's all over if we die too!

I'm going to see Repede.

Have you reconsidered your decision at all?

The ceremony will end tomorrow. Wouldn't it be wiser to wait?

It'll take 'em days to assemble a unit and send 'em here.

Even so...

Besides, I'd prefer to take care of this before they arrive.

Why is that?

I hear Alexei is really interested in blastia.

If there is a powerful blastia in the ruins,

he might order us to bring it back in working condition.

It's wreaking havoc with the aer and turning living creatures violent.

The citizens, Knights, and livestock were all harmed while we were away.

I want to avoid any more casualties.

I understand. I'll formulate a route for you.

Thanks.

I'm also worried about taking blastia with us.

Should the effects of the aer cause them to go haywire...

Not having magic artes could affect the squad's morale, however.

We still haven't learned to fully control

the way in which cores provide blastia with energy.

I'm sure they activated a little late last time, that's all.

All right. We'll take blastia then.

It's me, Yuri.

It's open.

What's up?

Oh, just couldn't sleep...

That ain't like you.

Here. Some juice for you.

Thanks...

Your wife and daughter?

Oh, yeah. They're both dead, though.

Happened in another incident. I wasn't able to protect them.

Back then, I was a firm believer that the Empire's orders were absolute.

Even when acting on my own might've saved their lives...

Anyway, a lot happened after that, and I got sent to the middle of nowhere.

It's actually pretty nice and easy out here, so far away from the capital...

It's sure biting us in the ass now, though.

Still, I don't want this to be a repeat of the past.

Flynn's old man was really something...

He was a real negative guy, but I have a lot of respect for him.

Guess it boils down to wanting to personally protect what's dear to you.

Yes?

I'm sorry to bother you at this hour...

What can I do for you?

Won't you sit?

N-No, thank you. We have an early morning ahead of us...

You don't seem to agree with tomorrow's mission.

I'm a member of the Knights. My personal feelings are beside the point.

I, too, am a little troubled by Captain Fedrok's decision.

Why does he insist on placing the brigade in danger?

I believe we should obey Headquarters orders

and protect the town until reinforcements arrive.

It appears you don't take after your father.

I met him once before, you see...

Captain Fedrok's actions actually remind me a lot of your father.

However, His Excellency's orders are absolute.

Captain Fedrok should obey orders, just as your father should have.

Flynn Scifo.

Are you still going to go, knowing you're committing insubordination?

As a Knight, I will obey the person in charge of this town.

I don't fully agree with him,

but I also wish to learn the meaning behind the captain's words.

Good night.

A shame. He might have made a fine servant for His Excellency...

Are you all right?

I have to drink for my dead pal too...!

Okay! Time to drink more!

You need to go home.

Let's go back.

Our brigade will now follow the river

and enter the ruins on the lake.

Our objective is to investigate the ruins

and identify and resolve the cause of the aer disturbance.

I'd prefer to wait for reinforcements from the imperial capital,

but this is a matter of emergency.

The city will be in grave danger if we don't stop the aer now.

We must protect the people!

So, um... Shall we go?

Yuri.

What's the matter? Why are you up so early?

Are you guys going somewhere dangerous?

Sheesh, where'd you hear that?

Don't worry. You know how tough I am.

Captain...

C'mon. Don't look like a bunch of grumps.

We'll be gone for a bit. Wait for us, and don't leave the barrier, okay?

Life will be back to normal soon. Just hang on a little longer.

Let's go.

Talk about reckless. They have no idea what they're up against...

After we went and warned 'em, too...

That's Niren for ya...

But, y'know, having them owe us one doesn't sound half-bad...

You serious?

You need to report to the Don! Scram!

Yeah, yeah!

Well, take care.

Captain?

Yurgis. Give your blastia a try.

Huh? Yes, Sir...

What the?!

It's the aer here.

We can't use our blastia?!

That's where these come in.

These formulas will keep them from overloading.

I made enough copies for everyone.

They don't last long, though. Use 'em as a last resort.

You knew our blastia would go out of control, Sir?!

Yeah. That's why I said this is an emergency.

We can't let the town's Barrier Blastia go haywire.

Let's move.

You're only telling us now?!

Could've prepared us before we left!

My bad. I forgot.

Huh?!

You're unbelievable!

You gotta be kidding me!

Is it really okay to leave this old guy in charge?

Shut up! Let's go! Come on!

I guess this explains why we haven't run into any monsters...

Hey, I dunno about this...

Are we gonna end up like that too?

Stay alert! There's no telling what might happen!

Frozen Arrows, ready!

Don't hit David now! Fire!

Pull him out!

Away from the swamp! Hurry!

That swamp monster seemed to react to sound and movement.

We'll split into two teams now.

One will cross the bridge and enter the ruins; the other will give support.

The support team will provide cover all the way to the entrance,

secure a return route, and then wait for the infiltration team to return.

Captain!

Let me avenge Lambert.

I'm counting on it.

Yurgis! Assign the teams!

Yes, Sir!

Those with crossbows, you're on support.

Those with swords, axes, or defensive artes, you're on infiltration.

Support team! Use the formulas the captain gave you!

Flynn!

Get over here!

Over here, Flynn.
