YUA:

Mason-san, whole village know you are guest here. Pay for Inn, but other money no good here. Inn like bank here. Okay?

MASON:

Wow, okay, I mean, I don’t understand that about the Inn, but okay. Thank you. Domo arrigato. Like, what if we go in a few days; Mik, is that too long to wait? Like, on the weekend.

MIKKI:

No that would be fine. Is that okay with you, Yua?

YUA:

We can leave after breakfast Saturday morning? Okay? I will need to get us horses. Do you ride horses?

MASON:

I have, and I don’t think she’s been on anything but a pony when she was little.

MIKKI:

Ya, is it hard? I’d do anything to talk to mom right now.

YUA:

You will do fine.

Yua looks at Mason as if for partnering for assurance.

MASON:

Ya, totally Mik, you got this.

Mason points at the sky and lays back down.

MASON:

I’ll be right beside you.

They nod, peace is over them. Mikki and Yua lay back down and look at the sky. Blossoms drift about like snow. Melting peace. Cut.

39 - EXT - THE INN - DAY

Mason, Mikki and Yua are seen loading and gearing up horses. The horseman that led them in is there. He seems to possibly work for the Innkeeper. People are around helping them. The Innkeeper is especially motherly, bossy and all up in what they are doing.

MASON:

Yes, Mama-san, yes, yes. Hai, Hai, Hai…we got it, we got enough. Check on Mikki.

MIKKI:

Ahhhh! Mase, I don’t know what I’m doing!!

The Innkeeper intervenes, helping her gear up the horse. The Horseman comes to Mason and hands him a small katana. They stare at each other. Mason bows,

MASON:

Domo arrigato

The Horseman bows back.

YUA:

Are we ready? Are you guys ready?

MASON:

Lets do this.

MIKKI:

No! No…I’m not ready.

Yua gets on the horse. Mason walks over to Mikki to help her on.

MASON:

C’mon, you got this, I’ll stay right by you. Just think about that phone call with you’re mom.

MIKKI:

I’m fine, I’ll be fine. I’m just being dramatic.

They laugh and Mason helps her up, then heads over to his horse. Yua looks at Mason, she likes him. He can’t seem to reciprocate that though. She clicks to her horse and leads it down the path. Mason nods goodbye at several people.

MASON:

Sayonara. Sayonara.

They clack and clop out of town, as they pass the Meadow, they wave at some sitting in the field. Then they head farther out of town then they had ever been before. The Main Path leads them out of the forest eventually and down off of the plateau. If anything ever happened to the forest that surrounded Tengukuri, it would be entirely exposed. It was thick and covered hundreds of acres. We enter a daytime montage ***NEED SONG*** The three travel through highlands, on and off their horses, racing, trotting, almost falling off. We see them off the horses and having a meal around lunch time. Then back on and slowly heading toward Phone town. We see each of them alone at some point, get to watch the thoughts on their faces. We then see Yua point to a town now in sight and down a long hilly meadow. The three pick up their pace and whoop in celebration.

40 - EXT - BUSY LITTLE SHOP - DAY

The three walk up to a busy but antiquated little Japanese market. They are in a small town beside a river, a last stop destination. Locals sit outside and eat and smoke. Animals can be heard somewhere outside, and river boat motors can be heard off in the distance.

MASON:

This place seems noisy to me! HA.

MIKKI:

I know right! My head is back in Tengukuri still. Or just out there, not here, I don’t know.

YUA:

I will go make sure we can use phone. We can eat, then choose what to do for the night.

MIKKI:

Are we not heading back?

YUA:

We would not be back before night. I’m sorry Mikki.

MASON:

We’ll figure it out. Go ahead Yua, lets make sure we can use that phone.

YUA:

Hai.

Yua walks up to the shopkeeper and talks to him, she is greeted with a smile.

MASON:

I’m slightly concerned about “Make sure we can use the phone.”

MIKKI:

Ugh, I’d be so upset.

They sit and watch Yua. It is windy in the village? The interaction seems positive. She heads back to them.

MIKKI:

She like you, you know…

MASON:

She’s 12.

Mikki laughs. And shakes her head.

MIKKI:

No she’s not.

YUA:

Ok, is good. We go sit down. Mikki, you call, can sit behind counter and talk to mother, I order food.

MIKKI:

Woot!

They three laugh and head in.

41 - INT - BUSY LITTLE SHOP - DAY

Mason and Yua grab at food on the table with chopsticks, and laugh. She is clearly flirting. He is clearly feeling more like a guardian than a beau. Mikki can be seen in the distance. She is happy at first, laughing and looking at around, possibly describing the things she sees. Then she stares at Mason, the phone call is changing. Her countenance drops, it’s about Mason. Something has happened. She continues her phone call for a little longer then sets the phone down and heads over to the table with a serious look on her face. She put her hand on Mason’s shoulder and rubs it slightly.

MIKKI:

Hey, mom’s ready to talk to you.

MASON:

Something’s wrong, what’s up?

MIKKI:

I’ll let mom tell you.

MASON:

Uh-oh.

Mason seems affected by bad news, but also incredibly ready to deal with it. He walks over to the phone and sits at the counter. Yua is concerned and we see Mikki pick up chopsticks, poke at some food but lean in and begin to explain to Yua.

MASON:

Meghan.

MEGHAN:

Mason! Big boy! I love you!

MASON:

Aw, little sis, I love you, it’s so good to hear your voice. What the hell’s going on? Mik said you had something to tell me. Everything okay?

MEGHAN:

Ya…but how’s it going, how are you? Mikki sounds great.

MASON:

Ya, sh*t, I mean, we found it Meg, it’s real. It’s crazy. We’re good, we’re in really great hands, the people are great. Maybe a few more weeks, I don’t know, we’ll be home by end of summer. People come in and out, I bet I could smuggle out a letter or two. What’s going on Meg?

MEGHAN:

Mason, I hate to do this over the phone, I’m so sorry honey, I’m sorry…

MASON:

Meg, f***, spit it out…

MEGHAN:

Mason…Dickey’s gone.

MASON:

What do you mean?

MEGHAN:

Dick and Kelly were hitting it pretty hard and got into an accident, Kelly is in ICU at Harborview still, but Dick died at the scene.

MASON:

Holy sh*t…Dick…

MEGHAN:

I’m sorry sweetheart. Mase…?

MASON:

I’m here, just…Jesus.

MEGHAN:

Mason…Delilah was with them.

MASON:

Oh Meg…

MEGHAN:

She’s with us, she’s alive Mase, but she’s awfully busted up. Lee is taking some vacation time to take care of her.

MASON:

Lee!!? Lee hates D. Meghan, what the f*** is going on? Do we need to come back?

MEGHAN:

No, no absolutely not. We are gonna do our best with this Mase, it’s important you guys are there. I talked to his mom, they’re gonna cremate him and we’ll do a service when you guys get back. Anything more than that right now is just too much for her. I went to see Kelly this morning, I’ll go every day. Lee and Delilah are getting along fine, she seems to know he’s taking care of her right now. Just, just, uh, stay focused on what you’re doing there. Okay sweetheart…just stay, we got this.
