LEE:

The mood at the table turns.

MIKKI:

Uncle Mase can Delilah have broccoli?

Lee and Mason have now locked eyes. Mikki tries to change the whole scene.

MASON:

Yeah she loves it.

Mikki reaches under the table with a piece of broccoli from her plate. Delilah can be heard eating.

LEE:

Mikki, don’t.

Mikki reaches for another piece of broccoli, while Meghan watches closely as if afraid by what is unfolding.

MIKKI:

But Uncle Mase said it was ok, it’s his dog.

The table goes silent. Mason is now staring viciously at Lee, as if waiting for a moment to strike. Mikki takes her eyes away from the table and reaches under the table with another piece of broccoli.

LEE:

Damn it, stop it, Michelle!

Lee slams his hand down on the table alarmingly with his shout. Dinnerware rattles. Meghan and Mikki both jump with fright in their seat. Mason does not move at all, nor has he removed his eyes from Lee’s face. Delilah can be heard growling from under the table. Mason’s rage is growing noticeable. Lee looks around as if justified in his outburst.

MASON:

If you ever talk to my niece like that again I’ll roll your head down the f***ing street.

Lee is shocked.

MEGHAN:

Mase…

LEE:

I know you think you scare people Mason, but you don’t scare me, guy. I don’t try to intimidate people with my words, or my fists, like you.

MASON:

Ya just your gun, badge, your patrol car, radio. F***ing wonder bread.

MEGHAN:

Meghan grows more irritated by the scene, as Mikki begins to gently sob.

MIKKI:

I’m sorry…I won’t feed her any more, can you stop please?

MASON:

Lee, my sister is with you because a cop was a safe bet for her little girl. And her little girl is all I live for, in case you hadn’t noticed.

LEE:

Just stop Mason…

MASON:

But as far as I’m concerned, no one needs you around; you’re a racist, controlling, ignorant f*** with his cock tucked under his thin blue line and you don’t deserve a family like this, you deserve a shank and a boyfriend for how you’ve represented justice in this city, just another scared cop without the control you think you have, Wonder Bread!

The girls both object to Mason’s outburst. Delilah has begun to bark and snarl from below the table. Lee retorts.

LEE:

Who the hell do you think you are, huh?! You think you’re some kind of savior sent to right all the wrongs in the world by being a total a**hole?! You’re not here for these girls every night, I am! I raise these girls right!

Mason gets up, clearly ready for violence; as he does, Delilah heads for Lee.

MASON:

You don’t raise “these girls,” my father raised these f***ing girls!

Delilah takes a snap at Lee, he backs away quickly and knocks chairs over.

LEE:

What the hell?!! Get the f*** out of my house! You and your dog! Tired of it!!

Mason stumbles to control Delilah. Mikki runs to her mother’s embrace.

MASON:

This isn’t your house, this was my dad’s house, b*tch!

Meghan, now with teary eyes screams at Mason

MEGHAN:

No, no, no! Mason Jeremiah, stop it right now! Right f***ing now!

Meghan violently pounds his chest and begs him. A switch goes off in Mason and he seems to settle down immediately. He tongues his cheek. He picks up a napkin to blow his nose.

MASON:

Scotch makes me snotty, I’m sorry.

He blows his nose and throws the napkin in Lee’s face.

LEE:

Screw you Mason, it’s time to leave.

Meghan and Mikki get up to walk upstairs.

MASON:

Meg…wait.

LEE:

It’s time to leave Mason. It’s ok, just go. I’m sorry, lets just stop, for them, please.

Mason seems done. As he controls Delilah, still on edge, he sways about the kitchen to gather his things.

LEE:

Hey, are you alright man? Let me call you a cab?

MASON:

No you’ll probably call one with red and blue lights on it ya friggin tattle tale.

LEE:

Alright, alright, lets be done.

MASON:

Lee…you’re a f***ing p*ssy. You hurt my family and I swear to Christ I’ll kill ya.

Lee is doing his best to disengage. He remains silent.

MASON:

Later, Wonder Bread.

Mason heads out the front door hastily and walks toward the motorcycle, stopping to let Delilah pee. He looks back as if he is going to say something else, but doesn’t. He buckles Delilah in the motorcycle and starts it. The engine seems to echo throughout the entire neighborhood. He puts his half helmet on, focuses the best he can on the road and slowly merges away from the sidewalk. As he begins to ride off, we see into his pocket and a message on his phone from Mikki. “I MIGHT BE WRONG”

MIKKI (TEXT MESSAGE)

I’m so sorry Uncle Mase. Please don’t be mad at me. I didn’t mean to start a fight. I love you so much. Please be safe. I’m so sorry, I love you so much. I love you Uncle Mase. Love always, Michelle.

8 - INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY

Mason is sitting at a table on his phone. First he looks at Mikki’s text. He sets his phone down and has a drink of tea. Taking a drink, he looks slightly disgusted. He pops the lid and pulls the tea bags out. In the trash they go. He gets up, approaches the counter.

MASON:

Hey I’m sorry, I changed my mind, can I just get coffee, or like an Americano or something?

Mason hurts. Physically and mentally. He has a nauseating hangover. He gets a drip coffee and sits back down. He reaches in his pocket and grabs his phone. We see the text from Mikki again. He scrolls through his phone and dials Meg. She answers.

MEG:

Dude…

MASON:

Hey, I didn’t think you’d answer, actually.
