The Quick and the Dead Page #5

Synopsis: Ellen, an unknown female gunslinger rides into a small, dingy and depressing prairie town with a secret as to her reason for showing up. Shortly after her arrival, a local preacher, Cort, is thrown through the saloon doors while townfolk are signing up for a gun competition. The pot is a huge sum of money and the only rule: that you follow the rules of the man that set up the contest, Herod. Herod is also the owner, leader, and "ruler" of the town. Seems he's arranged this little gun-show-off so that the preacher (who use to be an outlaw and rode with Herod) will have to fight again. Cort refuses to ever use a gun to kill again and Herod, acknowledging Cort as one of the best, is determined to alter this line of thinking ... even if it gets someone killed ...

...you put a fox in the henhouse, you'll

have chicken for dinner every time.

You're gonna burn for this,

you son of a b*tch.

This what you wanted all along?

Why don't you come and get some?

My nose!

Son of a b*tch!

Of course we'll fight.

But the rules say tomorrow.

-I'll even let you name the time.

-Dawn.

Break my nose twice.

Now we'll see how fast you can draw.

Into the valley of death....

I fear no evil.

-Who did that?

-l did that, Mr. Herod.

Ratsy, you ruined the contest.

You got 20 seconds to get out of town.

Wait, that's not fair. l only ever done

what you told me to, Mr. Herod.

Ratsy, you now have 1 5 seconds.

Goodbye, Ratsy.

-Oh, sh*t! Oh, sh*t! Oh, sh*t!

-What do you think, Cort?

There's a lot of people here

that want entertainment.

I could draw with my left hand.

How does that sound?

Of course, unlike Mr. Ace Hanlon,

I really can fight with both hands.

How do you feel? I'm nervous.

It takes a lot to scare me.

I love the sensation.

Time's up, Ratsy!

I always wanted to fight you, Cort.

Ever since the first time l saw you.

It's just this itch

that I had to scratch.

Whatever happens,

if he's still standing in the end...

...gun him down.

-Oh, my God!

-Sh*t!

You're dead.

You're dead!

Sorry, John.

Changed the rules.

From now on, all the fights are fair.

Who are you?

You stole my life.

Let her go, you son of a b*tch!

Let her go!

Wait a minute. Please, don't make

my little girl watch this. Please.

Let her go before you kill me.

Oh, l can't do that.

Tell you what.

I've had my three shots.

I'll give you three shots

to save your daddy's life.

You filthy son of a b*tch.

Shoot the rope...

...and if it breaks,

your daddy can live.

You got my word.

You can do it, darling.

I can't.

You can do it, darling. Come on.

Just hold the gun in both hands.

Pull the hammer back.

-l can't.

-You can.

-You can do it.

-No, I can't!

Don't you worry about this.

None of this is your fault.

Don't you blame yourself, now.

Just remember...

...that your daddy loves you.

I'll always love you. Now...

...just remember that. Now, come on.

Come on.

That's close enough.

You're not fast enough for me!

Today l am.

The law has come back to town.
