Water Lilies Page #2

Synopsis: Three girls, each about 15, deal with puberty, the onset of sexual attraction, and, for two, the pressure of virginity. Marie, who's slight and diffident, quiet and nearly expressionless, is friends with Anne, who's a bit chunky and impulsive and has decided that François will be her first love. Watching synchronized swimming, Marie is suddenly attracted to the team captain, Floriane, beautiful, aloof, tall, and rumored to be a slut. François pursues her. Marie begins to hang around her; they trade favors, and soon it's an odd sort of friendship. Each of the three experiences her own first, and Marie must sort out attraction and friendship.

-No.

You always say that, but you'll still be there.

We don't have to do everything together.

-But neither everything apart.

I've had enough of your childish behaviour.

Says she; the little girl without breasts.

You've had breasts since primary school.

But they're not real.

It's all fat.

You're mean.

I've had enough.

I'm fed up with you.

Ok, guys.

Out.

Look what he gave me.

Will you put on?

I don't believe in this stuff anymore.

Do you?

No.

I'm in trouble.

He wants to see me tonight.

My parents are out.

I'll do it.

What you asked me.

Wait.

I have to go.

Thank you for everything, Marie.

Hello.

-Hi.

Thanks for the necklace.

-You're welcome.

Are you alone?

Can I come in?

We must not split up, Marie.

I do crazy stuff when I'm alone.

Are you going to the swimparty tonight?

No.

Please come.

Stay with me.

No.

I have to go.

Franois is also going.

Stop daydreaming.

He is with her.

They did it last night.

Did not.

-Yes they did.

Let it sink in.

Forget about those stupid princessdreams.

It is not true.

-Yes, it is.

He told me.

As if he talks to you.

We did it.

He stopped by and we did it.

He did it with me,

she didn't want to.

Maybe he loves me just a little bit.

It doesn't matter.

I have my first kiss.

Me too, you know...

I love someone as well.

Who is it?

Do I know him?

No.

Are you going?

Wait.

You're ok.

Come. Let's go.

-I can't leave yet.

Come.

-I am staying.

All by yourself?

I am not alone.

Someone is waiting for me.

Are you sure she will?

Come home.

Nobody likes her.

Bye.

What are you doing?

-Nothing.

Come with me.

-I like it here.

What's up?

I want to ask you something.

Come here.

Come, Marie.

You see...

That wasn't so hard.

I'm going back.

He isn't half bad, eh?

If he turns out te be an ass,

will you come save me?

Céline Sciamma

Céline Sciamma (born 12 November 1978) is a French screenwriter and film director. Sciamma's work is strikingly minimalist, partly the legacy of her mentor, Xavier Beauvois, who advised her while she was a student at the major French film school, La Fémis. While highly formalist and idiosyncratic (notably in her lack of dialogue and very stylized mise-en-scene), Sciamma's filmmaking, beginning with Water Lilies relates closely to the characteristics of first-time filmmaking in France, notably in its emphasis on coming-of-age films focused on adolescents or pre-adolescents. Sciamma is very interested, moreover, in the fluidity of gender and sexual identity among girls during this formative period. more…
