Will Penny Page #6

Synopsis: Will Penny, an aging cowpoke, takes a "line-rider" job on a vast cattle ranch requiring him to keep trespassers and squatters moving till they're off the property. Ironically, he discovers that the mountain cabin reserved for the line rider has been appropriated by Catherine Allen and her young son, Horace, whose guide has deserted them en route to Oregon to join Catherine's husband. Too soft-hearted and ashamed to kick mother and child out just as the bitter Rocky Mountains winter sets in, he agrees to share the cabin until the spring thaw. But it isn't just the snow that slowly thaws; lonely man and woman soon forget their considerable dissimilarities and start developing a deep, if awkward and unstated, love for each another. Love us?

Hell...

You don't know how bad

it can be, ranchin'.

Say I got a frostbit

foot, or broke my hand?

Then we're starvin'. How's

love gonna stand up to that?

It's supposed to, isn't it?

Yeah.

Come closer with

you than I ever will,

with anybody.

I seen what it was meant to be like.

But... it's too late, Cath.

Too late for me.

I ain't a good gamble for you.

I wish luck to you,

though. I surely do that.

I love that boy.

- Pick us up them 50 dollars?

- You bet.

I'm quittin', Alex.

I couldn't work here no more.

Any money I got comin' for my time,

give it to Mrs Allen and the boy.

Is he ever comin' back, Ma?

Is he?

Say goodbye, Horace.

Wave goodbye.

Bye, Will.

Bye, Will!

Bye.
