A Perfect Chord Page #3

Synopsis: Cadence (Malia Flack) has an incredible gift for music. The only problem is no one knows it. Overcome with stage fright, Cadence has hidden her talent away only to show it in the comfortable confines of her school music room, after hours of course, and only for the ears of her best friend Lizzy (Avery Noel). As the daughter of successful sound engineer parents, Cadence feels the pressure to be heard. Mika (Elina Odnoralov) comes from a classically trained musical family and must contend with her piano genius brother. She struggles to deal with the weight of expectations, as she wrestles with her talent and the style of music her heart yearns to play. A Perfect Chord is an inspiring film about overcoming fears, living up to expectations, the power of friendship and using ones gifts and talents to inspire others.

OK, ARE YOU...

ARE YOU OKAY?

I JUST...

IT'S OK, YOU CAN TELL

US ANYTHING, RIGHT?

YAH.

YAH.

I CAN'T PLAY WITH

YOU GUYS ANYMORE.

WHAT DO YOU:

MEAN YOU CAN'T?

I MEAN, I CAN' WASTE MY TIME...

WASTE YOUR TIME?

NO, I MEAN I CAN' BE DISTRACTED.

DISTRACTED?

YAH.

WELL, I'M SORRY

THAT FOR...

HOWEVER LONG WE'VE

BEEN PLAYING TOGETHER,

THAT YOU'VE BEEN

WASTING YOUR TIME,

AND THAT WE'VE ROBBED

YOU OF YOUR CONSIDERABLE

ATTENTION SPAN.

I HOPE YOU FIND A SOF PLACE TO LAND WHEN YOU

FALL OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE!

WE WERE YOUR FRIENDS!

WHAT CHANGED?

YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND.

DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT?

MY FAMILY, WHERE

WE COME FROM.

MUSIC IS EVERYTHING.

IT'S WHAT WE DO.

AND I CAN'T SPEND MY TIME

ON SOMETHING THAT ISN'T...

WORTHY.

WELL MY FAMILY LIVES

FOR MUSIC, TOO.

AND THE HEART IS WHA MAKES THE MUSIC WORTHY,

NOT THE NOTES.

[MUSIC]

THROWING PEBBLES

AT YOUR WINDOW...

WHY WON'T YOU ANSWER ME...

I'M STANDING OU HERE WAITING...

YOU'VE GOT ME WONDERING...

YOU TURN MY WHOLE

WORLD UPSIDE DOWN...

WE NEED TO TALK,

SO COME ON DOWN...

ARE YOU EVEN UP THERE?

IT'S LIKE YOU DON'T CARE...

GROWING UP AND:

TURNING A LEAF...

YOU SNEAK UP RIGH BEHIND ME...

YOU TAKE ME BY THE HAND...

WHISPER SOFTLY...

HEY, I'VE GOT A PLAN...

DON'T YOU WORRY...

COME RUN AWAY WITH ME...

CUZ I KNOW WHERE

WE'RE GOING...

EVEN THOUGH YOU:

CANNOT SEE...

WILL YOU PUT YOUR

TRUST IN ME...

IN ME...

[MUSIC]

I DON'T WAN TO BE RUDE...

DON'T MEAN TO OFFEND...

BUT I'VE GOT TO KNOW...

HOW DOES THE STORY END...

THEN I STOP, OKAY,

WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT...

YOU SMILE...

THAT'S FOR ME TO KNOW...

AND FOR YOU TO FIND OUT...

BUT JUST BETWEEN

YOU AND ME...

I CAN'T WAIT FOR

YOU TO SEE...

YOU TAKE ME BY THE HAND...

WHISPER SOFTLY...

HEY, I'VE GOT A PLAN...

DON'T YOU WORRY...

COME RUN AWAY WITH ME...

CUZ I KNOW WHERE

WE'RE GOING...

AND I KNOW YOU'LL

SEE ME THROUGH...

GONNA PUT MY TRUST IN YOU.

WOW.

THAT WAS... THAT WAS

REALLY GOOD.

THANKS.

YEAH. THAT WAS GREAT.

I'M SORRY.

I SHOULDN'T HAVE ...I JUS WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I WASN'T A WASTE.

[PIANO COVER CLICKS OPEN]

[MUSIC]

I KNOW THERE ARE DAYS

IN YOUR LIFE...

YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR PLANS

END WITH THE DARK...

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT...

YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE

YOUR PLACE IS...

BUT I'VE SEEN THE FIRE

IN YOUR HEART...

IT'S MORE THAN ENOUGH

TO LIGHT THE DARK...

RISE AND SHINE...

OPEN UP YOUR EYES...

TONIGHT YOU'LL SHINE

BRIGHTER THAN...

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS...

RISE AND SHINE...

OPEN UP YOUR EYES...

TONIGHT YOU'LL SHINE

BRIGHTER THAN...

THE NORTHERN:

LIGHTS...

[MUSIC]

THAT WAS AWESOME.

YEAH. THAT SONG GIVES

ME GOOSE BUMPS.

YEAH. SPECIALLY

THE VERSE...

I KNOW.

THE VERSE, LIKE THERE'S

THIS ONE LINE...

WHY DIDN'T YOU SHOW UP?

I'M NOT MAD ANYMORE.

I JUST NEVER REALLY

GOT AN ANSWER.

WELL, IT'S KIND

OF A LONG STORY.

OKAY. I GUESS

I'LL TELL YOU.

WELL, LIKE I WAS TELLING

CADENCE MY FAMILY IS

MASSIVELY INTO MUSIC, BU NOT JUST MUSIC, FULL ON

CONCERT PIANO, GRADE A MY

FATHER, AND FIRST CHAIR

VIOLIN, MY MOTHER.

TOP OF THEIR CLASSES

AT JUILLIARD.

THEN ON TOP OF THAT WHERE

WE COME FROM IT'S LIKE THE

MUSIC CENTER OF THE COUNTRY.

IT'S LIKE ...LIKE NASHVILLE

FOR COUNTRY MUSIC STARS.

WHOA.

YEAH. IT'S KIND OF HEAVY.

YOU HAVEN'T REALLY

ANSWERED MY QUESTION THOUGH.

WELL, MY BROTHER

ALEXANDER IS THIS ...IS THIS

PIANO PHENOM PRODIGY WHO

LOVES ALL THE MASTERS

AND COMPOSERS.

HONESTLY, HONESTLY HE'S A

FREAK, BUT HE'S REALLY GOOD.

THE KICKER IS THAT EVEN AS

GREAT AS MY PARENTS WERE...

ARE, HE'S SO GOOD THAT HE...

HE GOT A FULL SCHOLARSHIP

TO JUILLIARD WHICH ONLY ENROLLS

24 NEW FRESHMAN A YEAR.

THERE ARE PROFESSIONALS

WHO HAVE PLAYED THEIR WHOLE

ENTIRE LIVES AND

COULDN'T GET IN.

TOGETHER:
WHOA.

YEAH.

SO TO ANSWER YOUR

QUESTION I DIDN'T SHOW THA DAY BECAUSE MY PARENTS LOVE

MY BROTHER SO MUCH FOR THE

PIANO AND JUILLIARD, I

DIDN'T WANT TO LET THEM DOWN.

YOU THINK:

WE'RE A LETDOWN?

NO. NOT AT ALL.

I JUST HAVE TO PRACTICE A LO TO EVEN CONSIDER COLLEGE.

COLLEGE?

YEAH. NOT EVEN JUILLIARD.

ARE YOUR PARENTS

MAKING YOU PRACTICE?

WELL, NOT STRICT LIKE,

BUT YOU SHOULD HEAR THE WAY

THEY TALK ABOUT MY BROTHER.

IT'S OBVIOUS WHAT THEY WANT.

[GIRLS MOUTHING WORDS]

DO YOU LIKE THE KIND

OF MUSIC YOU PRACTICE?

IT'S ALL RIGHT.

DO YOU LIKE:

THE MUSIC WE PLAY.

YEAH. I LOVE IT.

HAVE YOU TOLD YOUR

PARENTS ANY OF THIS?

IT'S NOT REALLY AN

EASY THING TO BRING UP.

OKAY. GOTTA GO.

BYE.

OKAY. SEE YOU TOMORROW.

LIZZY:
YOU SHOULD

TELL YOUR PARENTS!

[SIGHS]

YOU JUST HAD TO, HUH?

WHAT?

REALLY?

WHAT?

I JUST YELLED "YOU SHOULD

TELL YOUR PARENTS" TO A

TEENAGE GIRL'S FATHER.

[SIGHS]

I JUST WANT TO BRING THA FAMILY CLOSER TOGETHER.

OR GET HER KILLED BECAUSE

THEY THINK SHE'S FAILING

MATH OR ON DRUGS

OR SOMETHING.

OH.

IF SHE'S NOT HERE

TOMORROW, I'M BLAMING YOU.

SHE'LL BE FINE, RIGHT?

[FORKS CLICK ON PLATES]

[CLEARS THROAT]

MIKA, YOU'RE

NOT HUNGRY TONIGHT?

OH, NO. I AM.

IT'S REALLY GOOD.

MIKA, YOU'VE BEEN PUSHING

THAT PEA DOING LAPS AROUND

YOUR PLATE FOR THE

LAST TEN MINUTES.

UM, I'M SORRY.

MIKA, IS THERE SOMETHING

YOU WANT TO TELL US?

HONEY, YOU KNOW YOU CAN

TALK TO US ABOUT ANYTHING.

WHAT WAS IT THAT YOUR

FRIEND THOUGHT YOU SHOULD

TALK TO US ABOUT?

WELL, I KNOW HOW MUCH YOU

VALUE PRACTICE AND DEDICATION.

YEAH.

AND I KNOW HOW MUCH

YOU TREASURE YOUR TIME

AT JUILLIARD.

AND I KNOW THAT YOU EXPEC FROM OUR FAMILY, AND I DON' WANT TO BE A DISAPPOINTMENT.

A DISAPPOINTMENT?

WHY DO YOU THINK THA YOU'RE A DISAPPOINTMENT?

WELL, NOT THAT I AM A

DISAPPOINTMENT, BUT THA I WILL BE.

MIKA, WHAT'S... WHAT'S

GOING ON?

WHAT IF... WHAT IF I

DIDN'T WANT TO PLAY THE SAME

THING AS... I KNOW HOW PROUD

OF HIM YOU GUYS ARE FOR THE

KIND OF MUSIC THAT HE

PLAYS, AND I...

I DON'T WANT TO BE JUST...

MIKA, MIKA, YES,

WE'RE PROUD OF ALEXANDER.

HE'S GOING TO JUILLIARD.

HE'S DEDICATED.

HE PRACTICES A LOT.

IT'S WHAT HE'S CHOSEN TO DO,

BUT WE'RE NOT PROUD OF HIM

JUST BECAUSE THAT'S

WHAT HE DOES.

WE'RE PROUD OF ALEXANDER

BECAUSE HE'S OUR SON.

AND WE'RE PROUD OF YOU

BECAUSE YOU'RE OUR DAUGHTER.

GREAT MUSIC DOESN'T COME

ON A SHEET OF PAPER.

IT'S NOT FOUND IN A BOTTLE.

IT HAPPENS HERE:

IN YOUR HEART.

AND MUSIC IS SOMETHING

THAT IS FROM OUR HEART TO

GOD'S HEART.

THAT'S WHY WE PLAY MUSIC.

IT'S AN ACT OF LOVE

FROM US TO HIM.

DON'T HOLD BACK THE

SONG YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN.

DON'T HIDE IT AWAY.

MIKA, WE'RE

VERY PROUD OF YOU.

WHY DON'T YOU GO AHEAD AND

FINISH THAT PEA BEFORE I LOSES ALL OF ITS NUTRIENTS.

[LAUGHTER]

YES! THE DAD FROM

"WHEN IN ROME."

FINALLY! YOU SEE IT,

DON'T YOU?

[LIBRARIAN SHUSHES THEM]

NO.

HEY. HOW'S IT GOING?

WELL, THANKS TO YOU I HAD

TO HAVE A VERY UNPLEASAN TALK WITH MY PARENTS.

I'M SORRY.

I JUST ...I'M REALLY

CONFUSED RIGHT NOW.

WELL, I TALKED TO MY

PARENTS ABOUT EVERYTHING,

THE KIND OF MUSIC I WAN TO PLAY, THE SONGS

I WANT TO SING.

AND?

THEY'RE TOTALLY

SUPPORTIVE AND EVEN EXCITED.
