Charlie – That was a sudden change of heart.
Hazal – Well not so sudden, they have had a rocky relationship for some time now. You like her, I can tell, that’s ok, it was my fault anyway, I insisted.
Charlie – I like you a lot, it’s just that I, it’s not the kind of attraction that I have for Kay.
Hazal – I understand, you’re not too hot either.
The two spend the morning and afternoon together, they begin to relax and enjoy each other’s company more with each passing moment. “Since everything is out in the open, why don’t you tell me more about yourself”, she puts the morning news paper on the floor. “What do you want to know,” he lights another cigarette, “everything, like where have you been all your life.”
Charlie – I’ve been solitary, I think that would be the best way to put it.
Hazal – You lived alone with the wolves in the mountain, with just a torch light.
Charlie – I was arrested by the military police and put away for a crime I did not commit.
The conversation continues, backward and forward, neither of the two aware that they were connecting at a much deeper level, Charlie notices her imperfection in her appearance and begins to appreciate her the way she is. The conversation turns to Hazal, “well, now that you know my past, tell me yours” day turns into night the hours roll on, until Charlie suddenly becomes aware of the time.
Charlie – I can’t believe it. it’s getting late, look I must leave now,
Hazal – I’ll call a cab.
Charlie – No need, I’ll catch the train.
The following day, work commences as usual Kay is overseeing the teams work in the park, Charlie is busy decorating and maintaining the park, “good work Charlie, I like what you’re doing, keep it up” Kay is visibly upset by her breakup with Travis. “I heard from Hazal what had happened, I’m sorry to hear it” he puts the plants on the ground, gets up and has a short break, it starts to rain a little.
Charlie – Do you feel like a tea break, is it permissible.
Kay – I’d love a tea break.
Charlie – Great, lets make our way to the tea house just down the road.
Kay – How is Hazal, I see you two are getting very close.
Charlie – Charlie she is fine, we get along, I like her sense of humour, her intelligence.
Kay – She has said I few things about you as well.
Charlie – Like what?
Kay – Like you snore all night long, and that you like the band ABBA.
Charlie – She did not, I’ll have a word with her, that’s all-private talk.
Just as Charlie is getting to know Kay better, he still feels a fondness for Hazal, she cast a magic spell on him, he can still hear her voice, smell her scent. Charlie pays the bill, and the two return to their workplace.
Mr Singh – Mr Sims, you have a letter, I think it’s from the department of Armed Services.
Charlie – Let me see,
Mr Singh – Here it is, you can take a break, if you like.
Charlie opens the letter, it is from Armed Services, “ Mr Charlie Sims, we are obliged to inform you that a case has been opened concerning your time on foreign territory, and the death of two of your colleagues, Mustafa Rahman and Sam Williams” Charlie reads through the letter carefully, a court date is arranged for the indictment of all those involved in the criminal activity, notably the senior military commanders, responsible for the death of Mustafa and Sam.
Kay – Charlie what is the matter, you look alarmed, is everything ok.
Charlie – To tell you the truth I don’t really know, but I must take time off for a court appearance, it’s mandatory.
Kay – When is the court date due.
Charlie – Next week, Tuesday the third.
Charlie arrives in the military court dressed in a dark suit, there is a right to press and to public, Hazal attends the hearing.
Court officer – Can Mr Charlie Sims step forward.
Charlie – Yes, your honour.
Court officer – Mr Sims, the case has been reopened, the court finds that two of your colleagues were unlawfully murdered, Mustafa Rahman and Sam Williams. Mr Sims you are acquitted of charges held against you, you are to be honourably discharged from you Unit and to be cleared of all wrongdoing. Your name will cleared from the records, and your full citizenship of the country you have served is to be reinstated. The press takes their snap shots, members of the public applaud the court officer. Hazal is seen in the background, she is happy and tearful, “You are free to go, Mr Charlie Sims”.
Charlie – Thank you your honour.
Hazal – Congratualtion Charlie, I think this is a moment of celebration.
Charlie – Well I think we should go and celebrate.
Hazal – lets call Kay, she can join us.
Charlie – No, I’d rather it be just me and you.
Hazal – A change of heart.
Charlie – That’s right.
The End.
