BILLY:

No. I don't know!

FEGGY:

Jeeez Bill, are ye all right, ye

don't look great.

Billy jostles impatiently past the PEOPLE in front of them

away from a bemused Feggy.

131 INT. COPPER BEECH NIGHT CLUB - MOMENTS LATER 131

Billy approaches Breda. He stops for a moment to TAKE HER IN.

He SEES her big smile.

Time seems to SLOW DOWN and for a moment everything around

her seems to vanish into the background.

Billy walks on over to the table and sits back down.

He is about to reach for his GLASS when Breda takes his hand.

BREDA:

Do ye want to head?

Billy looks down at her hand on his. He slowly nods his head.

Breda smiles and gives him his JACKET.

Breda slowly removes her hand from his and places it tenderly

on his face.

They look into each other for a moment. Breda kisses him on

the cheek and leans in close to his ear.

BREDA (CONT'D)

Bill, I just want to say that....

She rests her head on his shoulder.

The SOUND of the DISCO FADES TO A LOW HUM hum as he listens

to what Breda has to say.

BREDA (CONT'D)

... It'll be all right, we'll be

all right tonight, I know we

will...

Billy closes his eyes. His whole face seems to stiffen.

BREDA (CONT'D)

It'll be different tonight.

He opens his eyes and slowly disengages himself from Breda

and stands up.

BILLY:

Listen Breda, I just have to go

over and talk to the boys for a

second.

Breda smiles up at him.

Billy, leaving the JACKET, walks away from her.

BREDA:

See ye shortly.

Breda blows him a big kiss and LAUGHS.

132 INT. COPPER BEECH NIGHT CLUB - CONTINUOUS 132

Billy hurries through the crowd and passes Eoghan who nods at

him.

Billy ignores him and keeps going.

133 INT. COPPER BEECH NIGHT CLUB - AT THE BAR - NIGHT 133

Billy pays for a SIX PACK and a NAGGIN OF WHISKEY.

134 EXT. TOWN SQUARE - NIGHT 134

Billy sits on the steps of the TOWN HALL BUILDING slugging

from the whiskey and watching the door of the Copper. He

seems to be MUTTERING something to himself. He stands up and

begins to pace around. He looks to the front of the disco

every now and again. He continues to pace and mutter and

takes another large slug of whiskey.

He SEES Feggy and Tony emerge.

He walks after them and catches up.

BILLY:

Are we right lads?

FEGGY:

So you are comin'... Where's Breda?

Billy hesitates for a moment but then walks on, his choice

now definitely made.

BILLY:

Ye don't bring apples to an

orchard.

Billy lets out a BIG LAUGH, determined to be in good form.

He takes another slug of the whiskey to block out any doubts,

t o keep himself on track.

135 INT. COPPER BEECH NIGHT CLUB - NIGHT 135

An excited Breda beams at Eilish who sits back down with her.

BREDA:

He's comin' home Eilish... with me.

Eilish gives her a hug.

EILISH:

Go for it girl!

Breffni sits in beside them.

BREFFNI:

(to Eilish)

So are we hittin' this party?

EILISH:

I don't mind.

(indicates Breda)

This one's goin' home anyways.

Breda smiles and looks around at the crowds clearing out.

EILISH (CONT'D)

Where is the man?

BREDA:

Just said he was goin' to talk to

the boys.

Breffni leans in and WHISPERS to Eilish.

Breda SCANS the room but there is no sign of any of the boys.

She LOOKS to the toilet door but a BUNCH OF YOUNG FELLAS

comes out of it.

Breda LOOKS to Eilish.

EILISH:

Listen Breda... Feggy and Tony and

all of them are... They've gone.

BREFFNI:

They were all headin' to the party.

Breda is very still. She is now suddenly feeling dreadfully

sober.

Without a word, she stands up and grabs Billy's JACKET and

her BAG and prepares to leave. Eilish gets up with her.

EILISH:

Well if he's gone with them I

reckon we should march up there and

show the f***er up in front of

everyone.

Breda shakes her head and walks away.

BREDA:

Leave him.

136 EXT. COPPER BEECH NIGHT CLUB/MAIN STREET - NIGHT 136

Breda storms out with Eilish and Breffni close behind her.

EILISH:

Breda, come here, Breda!

Breda dodges past the POST DISCO CROWD and hurries on down

the street.

Eilish eventually catches up with her and makes her stop.

EILISH (CONT'D)

Look it I'll come home with ye.

BREDA:

No... I'm grand.

EILISH:

I'm insistin'.

BREDA:

Please Eilish, just go on...

Breffni catches up with them.

BREDA (CONT'D)

Breffni, will ye... I'm grand.

Breffni takes hold of Eilish's waist.

Breda makes an escape up the town. She walks through the

COUPLES ARGUING AND SNOGGING. She can HEAR Eilish behind her.

EILISH:

BREDA!!! BREDA!!!

137 EXT. MAIN STREET - MOMENTS LATER 137

Breda walks further on down the main street. She desperately

holds the tears back.

She looks across the street to the CROWDS QUEUING OUTSIDE THE

CHIP SHOP.

Breda walks on, reaching a YOUNG COUPLE strolling arm in arm.

Breda walks around them HEARING their LOW HAPPY WHISPERS.

138 EXT. CANAL BANK - NIGHT 138

Breda walks up onto the path beside the water.

A ROW OF SHRUBS block the bank from the street.

She stands for a moment and wipes her eyes.

She drops Billy's JACKET and her BAG to the ground and stands

at the very edge of the bank and her eyes FOCUS on her own

reflection in the water.

She SHIFTS HER GAZE to a BOAT moored to the bank.

Deep in thought, she doesn't hear or see the FIGURE that

a ppears behind her in the shadows.

FIGURE:

How are ye?

Startled, Breda turns around. It's EOGHAN.

EOGHAN:

It's all right... It's me, Eoghan.

Breda recognises him. She picks up her BAG and Billy's JACKET

and sits down on a BENCH behind them.

Eoghan sits with her and offers her a CIGARETTE. Breda

hesitates and then accepts it.

BREDA:

So did ye follow me up here?

Well I... I was on my way to the B

& B when I saw you coming up here

and -

BREDA:

- Not going to the big party?

EOGHAN:

Listen I managed to escape Ernie

Egan once tonight so...

Breda smiles.

EOGHAN (CONT'D)

Anyway do you want the company

or...

Breda nods.

EOGHAN (CONT'D)
