YVONNE (CONT'D)

And now I'd like to call on...

Breda Farrell.

The room descends into a hush as Breda gets up and steps onto

the scales.

As before Yvonne checks the weight.

Breda waits with bated breath for the result.

She looks out at all the expectant faces.

Yvonne turns to her and beams.

YVONNE (CONT'D)

Congratulations, Breda. You have

reached your target.

Yvonne hands Breda the club's SPECIAL AWARD, which is a

SCULPTED STONE which represents the weight lost. Breda is

thrilled as she takes her APPLAUSE and then sits down.

Eilish gives her a hug but affords herself a wry smile as she

looks at the stone in Breda's lap.

54 INT. FARRELL HOUSE/KITCHEN - EVENING 54

Billy sits with the PAPER at the table. Edel and James write

in COPY BOOKS in front of the DIRTY DISHES from the tea.

Billy EYES the KITCHEN CLOCK and suddenly stands up and

clears the dishes away into the sink. He sits down again but

seems distracted. Edel looks to him.

55 INT. EGAN HOUSE/SITTING ROOM - EVENING 55

Breda and Eilish stand drinking WINE with Margaret amongst

the rest of the women.

Yvonne arrives up beside them.

YVONNE:

(to Margaret)

And I was so sure you'd make it.

But for a girl like you a good

personality is probably more

important.

Margaret nods but is embarrassed.

EILISH:

And other people could do with some

manners.

Yvonne ignores the remark.

YVONNE:

So Eilish, another one got away I

hear.

EILISH:

Pardon?

YVONNE:

You heard me.

EILISH:

Oh yeah but ye see Yvonne at least

I only do them one at a time.

YVONNE:

Pardon?

BREDA:

You heard her. I mean thanks for

all your help and everything but

sometimes you could really do with

thinkin' about other people's

feelings.

Breda, amazed at her boldness can't help but BURST OUT

LAUGHING. Yvonne glares at her.

YVONNE:

Well I can still attract them, not

like some.

Yvonne steps back and raises her voice so the whole group

stops to listen.

YVONNE (CONT'D)

Ye see girls, Breda now realises

that you have to keep yourself in

shape or no man will want you, not

even your own husband, that right

Breda.

Breda is mortified and wants the ground to swallow her up as

everyone stares at her.

She hurries from the room.

56 EXT. EGAN HOUSE- EVENING 56

Breda walks quickly down the driveway, fighting back the

tears. Eilish catches up with her holding TWO BOTTLES OF

WINE.

EILISH:

F*** her, Breda. Come on, let's go

somewhere and skull these...

Breda stops and Eilish hands her a BOTTLE.

BREDA:

I'm so f***in' stupid. After a

meetin' one day and I was real down

and she poured me a glass of wine

and next thing I'm tellin' her

things... I was, needed to talk to

s ome one and...

EILISH:

Come on... forget her, I'm here

now.

Eilish puts her arm round Breda.

58 INT. FARRELL HOUSE/LIVING ROOM/KITCHEN - EVENING 58

Billy now looks even more distracted as he sits in front of

the television flicking around the channels.

Edel gets up from the kitchen table and comes into him.

EDEL:

Wonder how Ma got on. Will I ring

her?

BILLY:

No, I'll do it.

He takes out his PHONE and dials. He HEARS it RINGING and

waits for Breda to answer.

59 INT. CAR/BOG ROAD - EVENING 59

Eilish is at the wheel.

Breda has the RINGING PHONE in her hand to answer it when

Eilish whips it away from her and turns it off.

BREDA:

Eilish! It was Billy.

EILISH:

I'm sure he'll manage for one

night, come on.

Eilish puts the PHONE in her jacket pocket.

BREDA:

Eilish!

Breda has no option but to give in and she settles back and

looks out at the peat bog that surrounds them.

60 INT. FARRELL HOUSE/SITTING ROOM - EVENING 60

Billy takes the PHONE from his ear. Edel looks to him.

BILLY:

No answer.

He is clearly annoyed and walks from the room.

61 INT. BEDROOM - EVENING 61

Billy searches through his PHONE for a number as he opens the

wardrobe and looks at his SHIRTS. He chooses one.

He turns to the PAINTING on the wall. He LOOKS at the

PEASANTS and then the BIG TREE.

He GLANCES away to a PHOTO OF BREDA on her dressing table.

She is young in the photo and laughing.

He closes his eyes for a moment and then dials a number and

waits for the call to be answered.

62 I NT. HALL - EVENING 62

Billy, with the NEW SHIRT on, opens the front door to reveal

a teenage girl, AMANDA.

BILLY:

You're real good for comin' over.

AMANDA:

Jeeez, been a while all right. Well

it'll cost ye an extra twenty.

James and Edel come in from the sitting room.

JAMES:

Ah, Da. Don't be goin' out.

EDEL:

(smiling)

He has to go out and celebrate with

Ma!

BILLY:

That's right. I'll see ye's later.

Billy moves to the door but hesitates. He LOOKS to see Amanda

try to take James hand who recoils from her.

Billy turns away and quickly leaves the house.

63 EXT. MAIN STREET - EVENING 63

The EIRCOM VAN pulls up to the parking area.

Billy gets out and skips across the road to Mac's Bar.

64 INT. MAC'S BAR - LOUNGE - EVENING 64

Billy comes in the door and furtively looks around the fairly

empty lounge.

Quenchers gives him a nod.

B illy can't see Imelda anywhere.

He moves down through the lounge to check the partitioned

area at the back, where he immediately finds Breffni, Eoghan

and Ernie finishing PINTS and getting up to leave.

ERNIE:

There's himself.

BREFFNI:

Hey Bill, we're just off.

(indicates Eoghan)

I promised this dude that I'd bring

him out to Croghan Hill except

Ernie here won't give us a lift.

Ernie shakes his head and laughs.

ERNIE:

Jaysus, no way boys.

EOGHAN:

Have to get back to your women

folk?

ERNIE:

Ah no, Yvonne's busy with her Slim

and Slenders... Imelda was here but

fecked off... I'll tell ye Billy,

wait til' your eldest gets to

Imelda's age, Christ...

Ernie shakes his head and laughs. Billy, looking decidedly

uncomfortable.

ERNIE (CONT'D)

I have to get back to business.

Breffni steps into them.
