Vincent talks to his brilliant and beautiful assistant, JULIA BARTLETT (30’s brunette)
JULIA:
I like him. But this whole experiment is something I’m having second thoughts about.
VINCENT:
Its just semantics. You have to think science. If you look over the data, his answers, the brain activity. He is as close to the ideal candidate as we have seen. He is adequately intelligent, very athletic. Sure, he is depressed, but it is clearly because of social inadequacies which can easily be cured. We can give him a fresh start in life. He is strong, decent looking. There are still sections of his Amygdala and Hippocampus that can be manipulated with our personality neurological serum.
JULIA:
I would like to talk to him a little bit before we make a final decision.
VINCENT:
We have gone through all the psychological tests, doctor. We basically have a recording of his whole life here with our data.
JULIA:
We both know the human brain is the most complex matter in earthly existence.
VINCENT:
Very true. However, much of the brain functions, can be corrected, so to speak, with implanting Google into this particular brain. Think about it. The unnecessary guilt, doubt, and limitations that are implanted into all of us based on the human conditioning. Our experiment allows humans to experience all the joys and pain, yet have the power to do something about it, not just think about it. Knowledge is power my dear.
JULIA:
Yes, but have you considered that he might become too powerful for us to be able to control.
VINCENT:
Of course. There is always a contingency plan. In fact, I find it quite insulting to fathom that you would even consider I wouldn’t know what to do. We can shut down the implanted chip if we see he is endangering anything. We will have 24 hour surveillance on him anyway. Any precaution you can think of I have already thought of. I am the judge, jury, and executioner of this mission.
Julia smirks and rolls her eyes.
JULIA:
Yeah, I almost forgot I am talking to God right now.
Vincent laughs and smiles.
VINCENT:
Look! Believe it or not, I am not conducting this experiment to showcase my brilliance. I actually feel for socially inadequate guys like this Adam fellow. Even I have felt threatened by cooler guys in the past. I sympathize with him.
Julia smiles and nods.
JULIA:
I would still like to talk with him. Call me old fashioned but I feel like I can still get to know a person a bit just by conversing with he or she.
VINCENT:
Well I don’t see the point, but feel free to talk with him. I am going to choose him regardless of what you decide. Actually...come to think of it.. You should break the news to him. We still need his consent of course, but I undoubtedly know he will be thrilled to cooperate.
Julia turns around and walks away. She rolls her eyes.
VINCENT:
Don’t think I don’t know you are rolling your eyes, Julia.
INT. EXPERIMENTAL SITE - DAY
Julia walks in and notices Adam is feeling quite tired from the multitude of tests he has participated in.
JULIA:
Good afternoon, Mr. Brosius.
Adam shies away from looking directly eye-to-eye.
ADAM:
Hello
Julia takes a seat directly beside Adam and he squirms a little bit from uneasiness.
JULIA:
I have some news about the testing.
ADAM:
I sure hope its almost over. It has been a lot more trouble than I thought it would be. I’m tired.
JULIA:
(sympathetically)
I understand. Don’t worry, sir. You are all finished. I just wanted to tell you face to face.
ADAM:
When do I get reimbursed? It felt like a job so my mind is on money right now.
JULIA:
You are going to get a lot more than just the reimbursement for your time.
ADAM:
What do you mean?
JULIA:
Dr. Sexton likes you. He wants to use you for our project.
ADAM:
Seriously?
JULIA:
Yes. I just need you to give us permission. Unless, of course, you are not a hundred percent certain.
ADAM:
I’m certain. You know maybe I should be afraid, but I’m really not. I need to do something big with my life. My life has been so empty so far. I don’t want to waste more time.
Julia nods and looks at him sympathetically.
JULIA:
Well Mr. Brosius. I want to congratulate you. You show great courage. You should consider yourself one of the founding pioneers of project “Google Man”
ADAM:
Google man?
Julia smiles.
JULIA:
Yes. That’s the laymen term we are using for neurological compu-robotic implantation enhancement.
Adam smiles.
ADAM:
Google man it is. Sounds almost like a nerdy superhero. Well...its a hell of a lot better than plain old Adam Brosius.
JULIA:
Well, I will notify Dr. Sexton. He will guide you along during this whole process. He will show you how everything works and the supplements that you will be taking. And don’t worry...we will give you a couple of days to decompress.
ADAM:
Thank you, miss?
JULIA:
Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot to introduce myself. I am Dr. Julia Bartlett. I have a PhD. In Psychology from Harvard.
ADAM:
I am Adam Brosius. That’s my entire story..(chuckles nervously)
JULIA:
Don’t worry Mr. Brosius. You will have so much more to tell, a plethora of information once we get a chip implanted.
ADAM:
Call me Adam, Dr. Bartlett
JULIA:
Okay Adam.
JULIA:
Go ahead and relax for a couple of days. We will see you then and the doctor will go over everything step-by-step. This is something we are all very excited about.
Julia exits the room and Adam shuts his eyes...
INT. HOSPITAL SURGICAL ROOM - DAY
Adam had many electric nodes connected to his head. He can see a monitor of his brain activity during every thought, word, and action.
Vincent looks over his notes and glances over the monitor repeatedly.
Adam looks at the monitor himself. He is intrigued. Vincent goes over the information with him.
VINCENT:
As you see, we understand the level of stress you go through during every thought, word, and deed. We see the short-term, long-term memories, emotional response, serotonin levels, joy, pain, everything. The key we need to focus on to put it bluntly, is to make you happier. Give you sort of a swagger, confidence that can’t be shaken.
Vincent holds up a tiny square shaped chip and shows it to Adam.
VINCENT:
This little chip will be implanted into the base of the forebrain. You will also take a neurological serum. This serum will be absorbed in the nerves in your brain so you don’t get overloaded with unnecessary emotions that will arise under normal brain conditions. This serum basically helps you stay balanced. It also will help you feel more confident, amazingly. You will still feel everything like normal, yet we take a lot of guilt and fear away. Most importantly it keeps the neurons fresh. It is almost like a new brain, a new personality. We know that you want to be an actor. We have done studies on charming actors and we have personalized this serum to help re-program your brain. This serum is the heart of my creation. The chip gives you the knowledge, but the serum allows your brain to react smoothly to it. Without it, you cannot function normally with the kind of information you will be exposed to.
Adam gets a worried look on his face. The monitor records his brain activity from the emotion. Vincent notices.
VINCENT:
No need to worry too much, Mr. Brosius. That kind of worry is normal, but I doubt you will feel it very much after the procedure.
ADAM:
I just want to know how to attract women, live a good life, you know.
VINCENT:
Oh, you will. Anything you want to know how to do, your brain will have the answer combining the serum, and of course, Google. You will be surprised how easily things will come to you. It will be astonishing. You will know how to behave in any situation. Since you have great strength and athletic ability, you will also have an edge compared to others with the same body mass, muscle memory, etc. The personality serum is also something which will allow you to choose a hobby or occupation you enjoy...acting as an example. It works well with the information and allows the appropriate signals between the mind and body.
ADAM:
I just have one question.
VINCENT:
Shoot
ADAM:
Why me? You had hundreds to choose from.
VINCENT:
Well, honestly I saw a man with great potential. An upside that had been abandoned for him from the rigors of his everyday life in the environment he was exposed to. I just see a man who needs a second chance and who will reap the benefits greatly. I want to see it.
Vincent and Adam both look at the monitor after his response.
VINCENT:
You see that brain activity? That is anticipation of hope. That is excitement, happiness. This is something that you rarely experienced. The monitor tells me everything you feel and everything that you have felt. I want the world to remember Adam Brosius. The world will be your oyster.
Adam shuts his eyes...
MOMENTS LATER:
Adam is now unconscious and undergoing surgery. Vincent along with 3 other surgeons are performing the laser surgery on Adam.
Vincent shows great concentration and the others assist while reporting the brain activity shown on the monitor.
Vincent implants the Google chip as lines with cerebral fluid and neurological serum are being slowly administered.
SURGEON 1
Everything looks stable now, doctor. Proceed. Brain synapses looks good. Everything firing smoothly.
VINCENT:
Excellent! The hard part is over. Keep your eyes on that monitor gentlemen! Any slight abnormality of brain activity tell me immediately.
SURGEON 2
Proceed Doctor
Vincent successfully reattaches the top of Adam’s skull. He begins to sew it back together.
SURGEON 1
Everything looks stable. Blood pressure normal, oxygen normal, heart rate normal. Looks like we did it doc!
VINCENT:
It’s almost scary how smooth this operation went. It’s almost like it was destiny. In a couple of days this modern day Frankenstein will prove to be a successful mission for us all!
LATER:
Adam wakes up and notices a nurse, the surgeons, and Vincent all looking at him. He immediately holds his head in pain.
VINCENT:
Don’t worry Mr. Brosius. The pain in the head is completely normal at this stage. You have been through a lot.
Adam leans over and notices the surgeons still keeping an eye on his brain activity.
ADAM:
So, how did it go? Am I a genius now?
The staff smiles.
VINCENT:
Well, its a process. Think of it like a computer downloading a very large program. Obviously, your memory is fine since you know where you are and what we are doing. We will conduct some more testing after you have healed some more. We will administer some more serum to keep your neurons fresh. Then we will do some tests. And by the way..the answer to your question...it went beautifully. The surgery was a success.
Adam smiles and then closes his eyes again...
Adam wakes up again to see the staff monitoring him once more.
VINCENT:
Mr. Brosius. It has been three days since the successful surgery. We sedated you to make the healing process much smoother. We had to wait for the swelling of the brain to subside. How do you feel now?
ADAM:
I feel different. I don’t feel bad, just seems like I am not me. I remember everything, but...its hard to explain. I just don’t feel...
VINCENT:
As hopeless? Depressed?
ADAM:
Yes
VINCENT:
Well this is a good thing, yes?
ADAM:
Yes. I guess I just really didn’t believe I would wake up and feel like this.
Vincent nods and gets some reassuring glances from the surgeons in the room.
VINCENT:
Now we will do some tests. They will begin fairly simple. Then they will start to become more challenging. We can do the tests here when you are ready.
ADAM:
Is it alright if I get dressed first.
VINCENT:
Of course.
Adam dresses. He notices his bald head and stitches in a mirror. He just smirks slightly and talks to himself.
ADAM:
(to himself)
I guess it really happened. I have to say I feel pretty good.
Adam and Vincent sit across each other and Vincent tells him about the questions.
VINCENT:
Okay we will start with some factual questions about history.
Adam nods.
VINCENT:
Alright, name the only president in the United States to fulfill all his agendas while serving only one term
Adam hears the question and immediately sees the answer pop up into an imaginary field of vision.
ADAM:
James K. Polk. The 11th president. Born November 2 1795. Served term from 1845-1849. He was previously Speaker of the Hou...
Vincent laughs delightfully then interrupts him.
VINCENT:
Very good! We will try some mathematics. What is 5321 times 443 divided by 33.
Adam sees the numbers in his imaginary field of vision and answers almost instan4tly.
ADAM:
7,1430.393
Vincent and his staff smile at each other.
VINCENT:
Correct
Adam smiles and he looks at his brain activity on the monitor.
ADAM:
Any more brain busters?
The staff smiles.
VINCENT:
I can see you feel pretty good about yourself..of course you do. That is the whole point.
ADAM:
Yes. I can easily interpret all those readings on the monitor. Probably better than you..haha
The staff laughs. Adam raises his eyebrows and grins. His aura of confidence and charm resonates for everyone.
VINCENT:
Well, maybe..but before we send you loose out into the wild..we need more psychological tests.
ADAM:
Yeah, yeah, yeah....typical Procedures. I guess I’ll play along for now.
Julia walks into the office. Adam smiles and studies the contours of her physical features.
ADAM:
Well hello beautiful!
Julia smiles and takes a seat across from Adam. Vincent and the surgeons keep their eyes on the monitor. Adam notices.
ADAM:
I know all that brain activity shows that I’m feeling nice and confident. Ready, willing, and able.
Adam winks at Julia after he makes his statement. Julia smiles back. She is charmed, but she quickly becomes more serious as she realizes it is unprofessional.
JULIA:
Well, I can see that you’ve overcome that country boy shyness. I’m interested. What were you thinking of right before you were prompted to say that?
ADAM:
Well, honestly I saw some responses available to use in an appropriate attempt to charm a lady. I saw figures like Matthew McConaughey, James Bond, Jason Mamoa. You know, all those irresistible men. I saw it from Google Play, then I just felt comfortable and relaxed.
JULIA:
What do you mean you saw?
VINCENT:
Well, the program allows him to see...
ADAM:
If I may interrupt doctor. It shows me an invisible, yet very tangible choice of operations regarding certain scenarios. Simply stated: I say things that are most likely to be a pleasant answer to the recipient.
JULIA:
Well, I can see that he also has the ability to manipulate. I have to give you credit, doctor. I didn’t think psychological input would be available. I thought maybe it was just about retaining a lot of information.
VINCENT:
Like I said before Julia, I have rehearsed every scenario of the possibilities in my own head. So
I truly believe this charming gentleman here will live a life that most can only dream of.
