Katherine

“Well, not really, but sure. What type of music do you like?”

Kale

“Classic Rock all the way”

Katherine

“Ooh nice. What about? the Beatles or the Rolling Stones?”

Kale

“Both great bands, but I’m going to have to go with the Beatles”

Katherine

“Oh come on, that’s such a basic answer. Everyone says the Beatles changed music, but they only came out three years before the Rolling stones.”

Kale

“You asked. It’s not just that they changed music but that they have so many songs that are gold to my ears. By far my favorite band of all time.”

Katherine

“Gold to my ears? Ok grandpa”

Kale

“I mean come on, Eleanor Rigby, Let it Be, so many others.”

Katherine

“I can tell your like a super fanboy to these guys so I’m not gonna even bother arguing”

Kale

“Have you ever thought that maybe you're the weird one for not liking the Beatles?”

Katherine

“My dad plays a lot of the Beatles so I got really sick of them.”

[The concern and remorse in Kale’s eyes are evident, as if a sudden realization has struck him.]

Kale

“Do you get along with your father? Yeah, he drinks, but is he a good father?”

[We can see Katherines face drop instantly from shock as if nobody had asked her that before]

Kale

“Oh I'm sorry, we don’t have to talk about that. Sorry let’s just……”

Katherine

“No it’s fine, really. I usually don’t tell people this, but he’s probably the most sociopathic parent one could ask for. When he knows he’s the one in the wrong he still blames others and gaslights his way out of things. He can be so nice at times, then suddenly explode.”

Kale

“Man, I'm really sorry Katherine, I didn’t know. Why do you still live with him?”

Katherine

“Well, he told us that…… I actually don’t know why I still live with him.”

Kale

“I'm not going to say I know what you're going through, cuz I don’t. But I know how it feels. It feels like It’s your own thoughts you can’t escape, to the point where everyday it gets harder and harder. Life right now feels like a race with no end, and nobody wants to run a race without a finish. And you think this feeling will last forever, but it won’t. You’ll find your finish line Katherine.”

Katherine

“Wow, did you just come up with all of that? That was some deep sh*t man. You're a smart kid Kale, and you aren't like every other kid our age.”

Kale

“Thanks Katherine, in other words you mean most kids would be talking about Star Wars or Superheroes but here I am talking about finding your meaning in life.”

((They both laugh)

[Kale looks at the clock and it’s eight]

Kale

“Oh wow, it’s already eight. My brother told me to be outside by now, Katherine I had a great time, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Katherine

“Alright, cya Kale.”

[One of the bowling balls rolling transitions into Katherines bike tire spinning.Katherine arrives back home, exhausted from biking, and fumbles with her keys to unlock the door. In her haste she forgets to unlock it behind her,as she cautiously steps into her house, her heart races with the anticipation of encountering her father. To her relief she still finds him sprawled unconscious on the couch, lost in the depth of his own drunken slumber. Feeling a mixture of trepidation and weariness, Katherine trudges up to her room, the rhythmic sound of the bristles against her teeth serving as a momentary distraction from the tumultuous reality outside her bedroom walls. Exhaustion finally takes over, and she drifts into a restless sleep.Suddenly, the shear sound of her alarm clock pierces the silence, jolting Katherine awake. Disorientated she rubs her eyes and sits up, realizing that another day has begun. Katherine mechanically goes through her morning routine, brushing her teeth, eating a quick breakfast, and having a shower. As she finishes she glances towards the couch, only to find her fathers absence. Just as she begins to ponder her fathers absence, a knock echoes through the door, interrupting her thoughts. Curiosity mixed with caution, Katherine approaches the door, her eyes widen as she recognizes the familiar face standing on the other side. It’s Kale.

EXT./INT. Katherine’s House- Morning

Kale

“Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to walk to school together.”

Katherine

“Oh, hey Kale. How do you know I live here?”

Kale

“We go on the same bus, are you serious? I've literally lived right over there for ten years.”

Katherine

“That’s true, I just thought you never paid attention to me.”

Kale

“Of course I pay attention Katherine, you're my best friend. Even though I never got to know you really, until last night. And I want to talk to you about something, but you have to promise not to judge me.”

Katherine

“Alright? What are you gonna tell me?”

Kale

“I’ll tell you on the walk.”

Katherine

“Alright I’ll go grab my bag”

[They are walking to school]

Katherine

“So what were you going to tell me?”

Kale

“Do you know what Jehovah's Witness is?”

Katherine

“Umm, ya, a religion. Why?”

Kale

“Well I’m with the Jehovah's Witness, or was. And the reason why I haven't been able to get to know you until recently is because my family wouldn’t let me,when a part of Jehovah witnesses you can’t see people who aren't in the religion. But I’m done listening to them, my brother and I both.”

Katherine

“Do what you want to do Kale, not what they tell you to do.”

Kale

“But the reason why I was telling you this is because I feel like you can relate from what you told me last night. You feel like you're forced to obey your dad the same way I do with my religion. But it doesn’t have to be that way, my brother has lots of money and we were going to go to los angeles to start a new life, he can drive. I just thought you would be the best person to ask since yesterday you said you wanted to start a new life.”

Katherine

“Ya but Kale, plans like this never pan out. We would end up homeless.”

Kale

“Maybe, but isn’t that better than your present?”

Katherine

“I would want to, I just don’t want to risk my whole life. I’m sorry, I like you, but I can’t just run away from my problems. Also I think my dad learnt not to get physically abusive since my mom passed.”

Kale

“Alright Katherine I get it, just worth a shot asking.”

Katherine

“Are you still going to Los Angeles with your brother? What would you do for money, and food?”

Kale

“We’re leaving tomorrow, my brother has enough money to last us for a while, then while I’m in Hollywood my brother and I are going to try and sell our script.”

Katherine

“Oh sh*t, so you're really going through with it? I mean the thought of coming with you is promising.”

Kale

“Really? Don’t feel pressured,it could be a huge mistake.”

Katherine

“It could be a huge mistake, but that’s what makes it a risk. Without the feeling of doubt, it wouldn’t be a risk at all. Anyway let’s talk about some light hearted stuff now, things normal kids our age would talk about.”

Kale

“Ya, ok, let’s see what’s more lighthearted? Are you more of a Pepsi or Coke person?”
