Katherine (Laughs)

“So this is your idea of small talk?”

Kale

“Well what do you want to talk about?”

Katherine

“What’s your script about?”

Kale

“It’s about this dude who has a so-called normal life, he has friends and a wife. Yet some things are not right, there seems to be a sense of hatred towards him that cannot be explained. People do horrible things to him and we feel pity. We then realize he is a prisoner in a simulation designed to emotionally manipulate him, since he was like a serial killer or something.”

Katherine

“That’s a much more lighthearted conversation.”

Kale

“Ya it’s not the happiest script, how do you like it though?”

Katherine

“It’s a pretty thought provoking plot. I do have to say the concept of the protagonist really being the antagonist sounds intriguing.”

Kale

Thanks, I mean, for not judging me, most people just tell me my dreams aren't going to work out.

Katherine

The people who judge you for wanting to pursue your dreams are the same people who couldn’t pursue theirs. Prove them wrong. I’ll let you know tomorrow if I'll come or not.

[a car pulls up next to them, it’s Kales brother (Damien)]

Damien

Hey, I should've asked before you left, you want a drive to school?

Kale

Oh, hey man. Katherine, this is my brother Damien. You want a drive?

Katherine

Sure.

[They get in the car which is some model from the 90s)

Kale

I was just telling Katherine about our plan

Damien

You know you can’t go running around inviting everyone.

Kale

Well duh, I know that. I only asked Katherine if she wanted to join us.

Damien

Oh ya, why her?

Kale

She wants to restart. Just like us, a new beginning.

Damien

Well you can come with us kid but don’t expect much.

Katherine

I might, I want to, but I don’t know if I will.

Damien

Well if you do you can’t tell anyone. This is some serious sh*t man, It would be considered a felony if caught.

Katherine

I won’t tell anyone.

Damien

Alright sweet, well we’re here I’ll see you after school Kale. And I’m sorry, what was your name again?

Katherine

It’s Katherine

Damien

Do you want a drive back to your house after school Katherine?

Katherine

Oh, I appreciate it. But my dad wouldn’t like me going home with strangers, I can always take the bus anyway.

Damien

Ok, well. Cya.

(The two get out of the car and head to class. In class they are all learning until the teacher gets a phone call)

Teacher(answers phone)

Hello? Oh, yes of course. Just sign into the office and next let us know a day prior. Alright have a good one. Katherine, it’s your dad. He says you have a doctor's appointment.

Katherine

Like, right now?

Teacher

Yep, bring your book with you and do pages 33-36 please

[Katherine heads down to the office where her dad is sitting in his car waiting for her. We can’t see his face throughout the whole shot but we can see the back of his head. She gets in the car.]

Katherine

Hi dad, I didn’t know I had an appointment today

[The dad doesn’t respond, and the rest of the drive is dead silent]

Katherine

Hey dad, why do we have to go to the doctor

Dad

Katherine

dad?

Dad (drunk)

We aren't going to the doctor

Katherine

Then, where are we going? Couldn’t this have waited til after school?

Dad (Drunk)

No, this needs to be addressed immediately. Where did you go last night? You know you aren't supposed to leave the house dammit, you're only thirteen.

Katherine

What do you mean? Did you pull me from school to ask me that?

Dad

Cut the bullshit, I know you went out last night. You forgot to lock the door. And then this morning I see you leave with some boy.

Katherine

I thought you had your appointment this morning. Have you been drinking, dad it’s 9:00.

Dad

My appointments tomorrow. Stop deflecting, tell me who that boy was.

Katherine

That was just Kale, he’s just a friend from school.

Dad

What did you do with him last night?

Katherine

We just went bowling I swear.

Dad

And you wonder why your mom was stressed.

[The mention of her mom hits Katherine like a weighty anchor, causing her expression to sink with profound sorrow.]

[They pull up to their house]

Katherine

She was stressed because you abused us.

Dad

What the f*** did you just say?

Katherine

You abused us

Dad

Go inside

[As Katherine enters the house, fear clenches her heart, tightening its grip with every step. She casts a nervous glance over her shoulder, sensing her father's presence looming behind her. The camera still skillfully conceals his face, leaving his identity obscured, emphasizing the menacing aura that surrounds him. With a resounding thud, the door slams shut, sealing Katherine inside with her fathers volatile emotions. A primal instinct urges her to shrink away, to find solace and safety in the confines of her own vulnerability. The house itself seems to hold its breath, the atmosphere charged with tension. And then, with an explosive force, her father screams tear through the air, piercing the fragile tranquility of the moment. The sound reverberates, drowning out all other senses. It is a cacophony of anger and frustration-a visceral symphony of a troubled soul. The camera captures Katherines reaction, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and resignation. She braces herself for the emotional onslaught, each scream chipping away at the fragments of her fragile spirit. The walls seem to close in, their very foundation echoing the reverberations of her father torment. ]

Dad

What the f*** were you thinking, screaming that outside for our neighboors to hear.

[He proceeds to take of his belt to hit her]

Katherine

Dad, remember what you said. Look at what mom did, because you abused her.

Dad

Shut Up, don’t act like you're the one in the right.

[It cuts back to the therapy center]

Roger

“With a dad like hers, who wouldn’t grow up depressed”

Andy

“Did her dad get away with it, or did she do anything about it?”

Roger

That I don’t know, I just know she was abused growing up and couldn’t move on. And sadly that’s how her story ends.

Andy

How often did she talk about her dad, did you get the chance to meet him?

Roger

She spoke about him rarely, and yes, I know him more than I’d like too. Anyway Andy, that’s my hour for the day, I’ll see you later.

Andy

Alright Roger, have a nice day. I just want you to know there was no way you could have helped, it was too late in her life to make a difference.

Roger

Maybe, See you Andy

(It cuts back to Katherine crying from her dad who’s breathing heavily across her.)

Dad

You know I'm sorry, for everything.

Katherine

You're sorry for what? Beating me tonight, or being the cause of moms suicide?

Dad

Katherine, I’m sorry for everything. I will stop drinking. Tonight will be my last night.

Katherine

Dad you just hit me, you can't apologize right after abusing someone.

Dad

You're right, are you going to report me?

Katherine

You said if mom reported you you’d kill her. And now here you are, asking me if I'm going too?
