I Call First Page #5

Synopsis: Bobby (Anthony Cillo) is a typical young man on the streets of Denver, Colorado. Even as an adult, he stays close to home with a core group of friends with whom he drinks and hangs around. He gets involved with a local girl (Hannah Richter) he met on the RTD Light Rail, and decides he wants to get married and settle down. As they get deeper into their relationship, he declines her offer to have sex because he thinks she is a virgin and he wants to wait. One day, the girl tells him that she was once raped by a former boyfriend. This crushes Bobby. He rejects her and attempts to return to his old life of immaturity with his friends. However, after a particularly wild party with friends, he realizes he still loves her and returns to her apartment one early morning. He awkwardly tells her that he forgives her and says that he will "marry her anyway." Upon hearing this, the girl tells him marriage would never work if her past weighs on him so much. Bobby becomes enraged, but quickly recants

You had to choose, right?

You had to.

-What were we gonna do?

-l told you l'd lose.

-Come on, will you, we chose it.

-l called first.

-Bobby's first! Bobby's first!

-l called first.

He's first. Hal's second.

lf l can't go first, nobody's going first.

First!

-l want a kiss.

-Hey!

-Come on!

-Get out of here!

Get out!

-Get out!

-Get out of here!

Get out of here, goddamn it! Get out!

Leave us alone! Come on!

You guys are real jerks,

you know that?

You're bleeding.

-She scratched you. Your neck.

-What are you talking about?

-She cut your neck. You're bleeding.

-What do you mean?

l'm getting out of here!

You guys got some nerve!

You've got some nerve!

-Get out of here!

-What are you doing?

Where do you get off?!

l get the girls!

l get the girls!

Look at that son of a b*tch,

scratching me like that.

l ought to break her face.

What are you talking about?

l'll kill that broad.

-l'll get you for this! Yes!

-ls it my fault? ls it my fault?

l'm gone! l'm getting out of here!

Oh, you guys are happy now, right?

You're happy. Now you're happy.

You'll never understand why l won't

get a girl for you guys. Never again.

Who is it?

lt's me.

-Who is it?

-lt's me. Open up.

-J.R.?

-Yeah.

-l. . . .

-Oh, come in.

l just thought l'd come up

and see you.

That's fine.

l just thought l'd come up

and see you, that's all.

Well, l'm glad.

Are you all right?

Yeah. l'm all right.

l like your apartment.

Thank you.

l don't know. . . .

l really don't know why l came up here

so early in the morning, you know?

l just don't know.

l'm glad.

-Yeah, but l mean--

-Sit down. Come on.

l really have no right coming up here

at 6:
30 in the morning.

You know, really, l shouldn't have

come up here so early. . .

. . .but we've been, sort of, drinking.

-Would you like some coffee?

-Yeah.

Okay.

l'll be right out.

That's okay.

Just make yourself comfortable.

No television set, huh?

You want to watch TV at this hour?

No, just. . . .

l have a record player.

You can put some music on, if you like.

l like Giuseppe di Stefano.

You got any of his records?

Opera singer.

No, l'm afraid not.

How about Percy Sledge?

Who?

Never mind.

Would you like something to eat,

some toast or something?

No, thanks.

Be ready in a minute.

Hey, you're hurting me.

l'm sorry.

lt's okay.

No, l mean. . . .

l mean, l'm sorry about. . .

. . .about before.

l'm really sorry about the way

l acted last time, you know?

l thought. . . .

l thought you would be mad at me.

Well, let's say not really

pleased to see me.

Well, it was, sort of, your. . .

. . .decision. . .

. . .whether you. . .

. . .love me enough.

l love you.

You ought to know that.

God, how l love you.

Oh, l'm so glad.

-l missed you.

-l missed you.

-Did you?

-Of course.

-Now it's gonna be all right, you'll see.

-Yes.

l understand now, and l forgive you.

Forgive me?

Yes. l forgive you,

and l'm gonna marry you anyway.

You can't marry me anyway.

What do you mean?

lt does bother you, doesn't it?

Well, yeah, it bothers me, damn it.

But l love you,

and l'll marry you anyway.

No. No, l. . . .

l can't.

l mean, l won't marry you

on that basis.

What basis?

Don't you understand?

lt can't work that way.

You can make it work.

You said before it would be all right.

No. No.

Boy, you know, l really thought

you loved me, you know that?

-You had me believing that.

-l do love you, that's why.

What? Because you love me,

that's why you're not gonna marry me?

What kind of business

you handing me here?

What are you handing me?

You'll always find a way to bring it up.

You're damn right l could bring it up.

And if that's the kind

of a broad you are--

l'm to blame.

Because l feel the way

any reasonable guy would feel. . .

. . .l'm to blame for this, huh?

Be glad l'm willing to marry you.

-J.R., please.

-Hey, look. . . .

That's right. You had to

just make a fool out of me, huh?

-You couldn't wait till l crawled back--

-Okay, okay. Have it your way.

Oh, sure, just like that, huh?

Don't try and convince me.

How could l convince you to do

anything you don't want to?

-Who said l didn't wanna do it?

-Then l wouldn't have to convince you.

You gotta twist everything up

all the time, don't you?

Gotta twist it.

lt's not what l meant, brain.

What did you mean?

l don't know.

l don't know.

Listen, l told you that l loved you.

-What's wrong? lsn't that enough?

-No, no, it's not enough.

-Why isn't that enough?

-lt's not good enough.

-Not good enough?

-No!

Not good enough?

-You mean, l'm not good enough, that it?

-No.

Let me tell you something.

lt's not me, it's you.

Do you think you're the Virgin Mary?

Leading me on like that, letting me

in here this hour of the morning.

Come off it, will you?

What kind of broad does that make you?

And tell me something else.

Who else is gonna marry you?

Tell me that, you whore.

Because that's what you are,

if you don't know it by now, you whore.

l'm sorry. l didn't mean it.

Honest to God, l didn't mean it.

l'm just so confused

by this whole thing.

Go home.

Go home.

Mother!

O my God, I am heartily sorry

for having offended thee.

I detest all my sins because

of thy just punishment...

...but most of all

because they offend thee...

... who art good

and deserving of my love.

I resolve, with the help

of thy grace...

. . .to sin no more and avoid

the near occasion of sin.

Holy, holy, holy.

Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are filled

with your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name

of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

All right, l'll talk to you

tomorrow, okay?

Yeah. l'll see you tomorrow.

Yeah.
