EXAMINE SOME ENIGMATIC DEBRIS ON

THE BEACH.

IT'S GOT AN ABERRANT ODOR, THEY

SAID.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

THE, UH -- WELL, SOMETHING

WASHED UP ON THE BEACH, AND THE

COPS DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS.

ALL THEY SAID WAS THAT I SMELLED.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL THEM?

I'M A BIOLOGIST AT THE

UNIVERSITY.

MY FATHER-IN-LAW IS A COP HERE.

WELL, MY EX'S FATHER, ACTUALLY.

SO, YOU'RE DIVORCED?

NOPE.

OKAY. WELL, NOW THAT YOU'VE

HEARD THEM, CALL YOUR LOCAL

RADIO D.J. AND REQUEST 'EM.

"I KNEW THEM WHEN..."

THAT'S RIGHT.

YOU'RE ALL SET.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE PARTY --

TOMORROW NIGHT.

NOTIFIED IF THERE HAD BEEN AN

ESCAPED LUNATIC.

FRANK KINCADE IS DEAD, JOHN.

HE WAS KILLED LAST NIGHT.

OH, MY GOD.

WHAT HAPPENED?

SOMEONE OR SOMETHING TORE HIM

APART.

WE FOUND HIS BODY, OR WHAT WAS

LEFT OF IT, IN THAT DEBRIS ON

THE BEACH.

ANYONE SEE ANYTHING?

WE'RE NOT SURE.

BEACH WHERE FRANK WAS KILLED.

WE THINK HER PARENTS DISAPPEARED

THERE LAST NIGHT.

STATE OF SHOCK.

SHE HADN'T SAID ANYTHING SINCE

WE FOUND HER.

HOW CAN I HELP?

SCENE.

TILLIS, YOU'RE WITH ME.

PIECE OF THAT DEBRIS, BRING I TO THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE.

SURE THING, TILLIS.

SURE, DOUG.

YOU'RE THE SHERIFF.

[ SIGHS ]

HELLO?

HEY!

ANY IDEA WHAT THE PROBLEM IS?

BATTERY'S DEAD!

DOESN'T SOUND SO BAD.

WELL, IT'S DEAD 'CAUSE YOUR

ALTERNATOR KILLED IT.

THAT DOESN'T SOUND SO GOOD.

DO YOU THINK YOU'LL BE ABLE TO

FIX IT TODAY?

YEAH.

GREAT.

IF I HAD AN ALTERNATOR.

WHEN WILL YOU BE ABLE TO GE ONE?

TOMORROW.

WE HAVE TO BE IN JACKSONVILLE

TONIGHT.

[ CLICKS TONGUE ]

THAT'S UNFORTUNATE.

IS THERE ANOTHER GARAGE IN

TOWN?

THIS TOWN?

YEAH, THIS TOWN.

NO.

CAN I SPEAK WITH THE OWNER?

THAT'S ME.

I'M HECTOR.

SO, WE'RE STUCK HERE?

I'M AFRAID SO.

GREAT.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL TOWN.

I'M SURE IT IS.

HAPPENED ON A NIGHT I COULD

ALWAYS REMEMBER:

HAPPENED ON A NIGHT I COULD

NEVER FORGET:

YOU WERE AT OUR SHOW LAS NIGHT.

HIS ARMS WERE SO WARM, AND

HIS LIPS WERE SO TENDER

SEEMED SO RIGHT EVEN THOUGH

WE --

I PUT THE TIME OF DEATH

AROUND 9:
00, 9:30 P.M.

THERE WAS SEVERE TRAUMA TO THE

KIDNEYS, THE BLADDER, THE

SPLEEN, FOUR BROKEN RIBS, THREE

BROKEN VERTEBRAE, CRACKED

SKULL, SEVERE LOSS OF BLOOD DUE

TO LACERATIONS OF THE NECK AND

CHEST.

LET'S CUT TO THE VERB, DOC.

WHAT KILLED HIM?

ANY ONE OF THOSE THINGS COULD

HAVE KILLED FRANK.

THE CONSTELLATION OF INJURIES --

THE BITE MARKS, THE CLAW MARKS,

THE DEVASTATION OF THE TORSO --

SEEM TO POINT TOWARD SOME KIND

OF ANIMAL ATTACK, BUT NOT ANY

ANIMAL I'VE EVER SEEN.

AND THE SMELL,

DR. LAWRENCE -- IS THAT THE BODY

DECOMPOSING?

NO, AND I CAN'T IDENTIFY IT,

EITHER.

THANKS. THANKS, DR. JO.

COULD WE SEE THE GIRL NOW?

I THOUGHT SHE'D BE MORE

COMFORTABLE IN HERE.

ARE YOU ALL RIGHT, HONEY?

WE'RE GONNA YOU HOME SOON.

HOW LONG HAS SHE BEEN LIKE

THIS?

EVER SINCE WE FOUND HER LAS NIGHT.

AND YOU SAID THAT THERE'S

NOTHING PHYSICAL TO ACCOUNT FOR

THIS?

NOTHING I CAN FIND.

WELL, CAN'T YOU GIVE HER

SOMETHING, DOC?

WE GOT TO GET HER TALKING.

[ KNOCK ON DOOR ]

PARDON ME, DR. JO.

OHH.

OHH.

I'VE GOT THAT BRANCH FROM THE

BEACH.

JESUS, BOB!

SORRY -- POLICE BUSINESS.

UGH.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS, BUT THE

SQUAD CAR SURE AS HELL REEKS OF

IT.

SKUNK APE!

SKUNK APE!

SKUNK APE!

[ BREATHING HEAVILY ]

SKUNK APE!

SKUNK APE!

SKUNK APE!

SKUNK APE!

[ BREATHING HEAVILY ]

THAT ABOUT?

I DON'T KNOW.

KID?

SHE SEEMS TO HAVE CALMED DOWN

SOME.

DR. JO WILL TAKE GOOD CARE OF

HER.

NO.

NO, IT CAN'T BE.

WHAT IS IT, JOHN?

DID IT SOUND LIKE SHE WAS

SAYING, "SKUNK APE"?

SURE DID.

"SKUNK APE"?

YEAH, THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID.

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING

ABOUT?

I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER TOLD

YOU THIS STORY, TILLIS.

IT'S NOT SOMETHING I LIKE TO

TALK ABOUT MUCH.

WHAT IS IT, JOHN?

SPIT IT OUT, SON.
