The Runaways

Synopsis: In 1975, San Fernando Valley teen Joan Larkin reinvents herself as Joan Jett, a guitarist who wants to form an all-girl punk band. She pitches the idea to a sleazy manager, Kim Fowley, who pairs her with a drummer and then searches for a face: he finds Cherie Currie, at age 15, the perfect jailbait image for his purpose; by luck, she can sing. Two others round out the band, The Runaways. Fowley books a tour, signs them to Mercury Records, and packs them off to crowds in Japan. Seeds of conflict sprout early: Fowley puts Cherie front and center in the publicity, she's soon strung out on drugs and vodka, and jealousies arise. Without adult supervision, where can Joan and Cherie end up?

00:
00:30,614 -- 00:00:32,281

What am I gonna do?

2

00:
00:32,449 -- 00:00:33,658

Oh, sh*t.

3

00:
00:33,826 -- 00:00:35,284

You have to get it now?

4

00:
00:49,007 -- 00:00:50,842

Why does everything

happen to you first?

5

00:
00:51,009 -- 00:00:53,469

Here, take these.

6

00:
01:04,732 -- 00:01:06,107

You took Ma's heels?

7

00:
01:06,275 -- 00:01:08,484

Like she's ever worn anything twice.

8

00:
01:09,153 -- 00:01:12,029

Besides, you should be

more worried about her finding out. . .

9

00:
01:12,197 -- 00:01:15,992

-. . .how old your skanky boyfriend is.

-Does your boyfriend have a car?

10

00:
01:16,160 -- 00:01:17,994

I'm sorry,

do you even have a boyfriend?

11

00:
01:18,162 -- 00:01:20,037

Maybe I don't want a boyfriend.

12

00:
01:45,189 -- 00:01:47,148

No way.

13

00:
01:47,608 -- 00:01:48,649

Nice.

14

00:
01:48,817 -- 00:01:52,445

You're officially a woman.

Let's f***ing celebrate.

15

00:
01:53,697 -- 00:01:57,033

Derek, did Marie tell you

that she's not wearing any underwear?

16

00:
01:59,536 -- 00:02:01,162

Really?

17

00:
02:06,210 -- 00:02:08,669

I hope that runs in the family.

18

00:
02:31,109 -- 00:02:32,652

Are you just gonna hang around...

19

00:
02:32,820 -- 00:02:35,238

. ..or are you actually gonna

buy something this time?

20

00:
02:38,909 -- 00:02:41,077

Hey, honey, you're looking

in the wrong section.

21

00:
02:41,245 -- 00:02:43,913

The Women's section

is on the other side.

22

00:
03:05,269 -- 00:03:07,144

I want what he's wearing.

23

00:
03:34,089 -- 00:03:36,591

Oh, dude.

24

00:
03:38,510 -- 00:03:41,178

-Who am l?

-Elvis.

25

00:
03:41,388 -- 00:03:44,181

No, man.

I'm the f***ing Glycerine Queen.

26

00:
03:44,349 -- 00:03:46,726

Suzi Quatro.

27

00:
03:47,811 -- 00:03:50,229

-l'm the f***ing wild one.

-Yeah!

28

00:
04:31,021 -- 00:04:33,105

Mom's gonna kill you.

29

00:
04:35,025 -- 00:04:37,818

-lt really looks terrible.

-Good.

30

00:
04:41,323 -- 00:04:42,865

Crap.

31

00:
04:44,368 -- 00:04:46,285

Here, let me help you.

32

00:
05:31,123 -- 00:05:32,581

F***.

33

00:
05:35,043 -- 00:05:38,504

My brother says that guys

don't like girls that are tough.

34

00:
05:38,672 -- 00:05:43,759

He says guys like girls

that are soft and flirty.

35

00:
05:44,594 -- 00:05:47,138

Yeah, he would say that.

He's a p*ssy.

36

00:
05:47,597 -- 00:05:50,599

He does spend a lot of time

doing his bangs.

37

00:
06:24,259 -- 00:06:27,303

Next contestant,

from Mrs. Morgan's 10th grade class...

38

00:
06:27,471 -- 00:06:30,222

. ..Cherie Currie performing

"Lady Grinning Soul."

39

00:
07:25,529 -- 00:07:26,529

Nice pants!

40

00:
08:18,165 -- 00:08:19,415

Yeah!

41

00:
08:20,125 -- 00:08:21,917

-Sit down.

-Love you, Cherie!

42

00:
08:22,085 -- 00:08:24,295

You suck.

43

00:
08:24,462 -- 00:08:26,005

-l love it!

-Freak.

44

00:
08:26,173 -- 00:08:28,090

You go, Cherie!

45

00:
08:31,011 -- 00:08:33,179

We love you!

46

00:
08:35,682 -- 00:08:37,600

Stay up there, Cherie!

47

00:
08:40,353 -- 00:08:41,645

Sit down now, please.

48

00:
08:45,275 -- 00:08:48,652

-Cherie!

-She's going off.

49

00:
08:53,200 -- 00:08:54,825

Just keep working on those scales.

50

00:
08:54,993 -- 00:08:57,870

-l'll see you next week.

-Okay. See you.

51

00:
08:58,580 -- 00:09:00,623

Joan Larkin.

52

00:
09:05,128 -- 00:09:07,796

It's Jett. Joan Jett.

53

00:
09:08,506 -- 00:09:11,175

Come on in, Joan Jett.

54

00:
09:12,135 -- 00:09:14,428

All right. Here.

55

00:
09:15,805 -- 00:09:18,224

Okay. Well, let's get started.

56

00:
09:18,683 -- 00:09:21,352

-So what kind of amps you guys got?

-Amps?

57

00:
09:21,519 -- 00:09:24,688

Well, why don't we just keep it

unplugged for now, okay?

58

00:
09:25,148 -- 00:09:26,857

All right. A--

59

00:
09:27,025 -- 00:09:31,070

Well, l wanna play, like, Chuck Berry,

you know, "Johnny B. Goode"?

60

00:
09:31,238 -- 00:09:33,072

Why don't we just start

with a G chord?

61

00:
09:33,281 -- 00:09:36,408

A G chord to a C, to a D.

How's that?

62

00:
09:36,952 -- 00:09:39,119

G chord, like that.

63

00:
09:39,454 -- 00:09:43,666

On top of Old Smokey

64

00:
09:43,833 -- 00:09:46,418

All covered with snow

65

00:
09:46,586 -- 00:09:48,128

Now we're gonna go to a D.

66

00:
09:48,296 -- 00:09:51,340

I lost my poor sweetheart

67

00:
09:51,508 -- 00:09:52,508

To the G.

68

00:
09:52,676 -- 00:09:56,512

From courting too slow

69

00:
09:57,180 -- 00:10:00,015

-You see that? Did you see--?

-"Old Smokey"?

70

00:
10:00,350 -- 00:10:02,393

That one's goofy, man.

71

00:
10:02,686 -- 00:10:06,272

I mean, at least teach me "Smoke on

the Water." l know you know that one.

72

00:
10:06,815 -- 00:10:09,692

Girls don't play electric guitars.

73

00:
10:12,862 -- 00:10:16,699

On top of Old Smokey

74

00:
10:16,866 -- 00:10:20,911

-All covered with snow

-Covered with slow

75

00:
10:21,079 -- 00:10:23,664

I dumped my poor sweetheart

76

00:
10:23,832 -- 00:10:26,208

For screwing too slow

77

00:
10:27,377 -- 00:10:29,378

That's not funny, Miss Larkin.

78

00:
10:29,546 -- 00:10:32,381

I can teach you to play the guitar,

but you're gonna have to--

79

00:
10:32,549 -- 00:10:35,634

Excuse me, what are you doing?

Excuse me?

80

00:
10:35,802 -- 00:10:38,887

Excuse me, I don't think

you ought to do that right now.

81

00:
10:43,393 -- 00:10:46,270

Turn that off, please. Turn it off.

82

00:
11:32,275 -- 00:11:33,359

Hello?

83

00:
11:33,526 -- 00:11:35,069

Happy birthday, kitten.

84

00:
11:35,236 -- 00:11:38,781

Hey, Daddy. l saved you the best piece

of cake, the one with my name on it.

85

00:
11:38,948 -- 00:11:40,741

-Know why?

-Tell me.

86

00:
11:40,909 -- 00:11:43,035

Because guess who ruled

the school talent show.

87

00:
11:43,203 -- 00:11:45,579

-You?

-Yeah.

88

00:
11:45,747 -- 00:11:48,457

Well, me and David Bowie.

But when are you gonna get here?

89

00:
11:48,625 -- 00:11:52,044

The cake's gonna melt and Mom says

there's no room left in the freezer.

90

00:
11:52,212 -- 00:11:55,881

Well, l can't, kitten.

I got-- I gotta stay late tonight.

91

00:
11:56,049 -- 00:12:00,260

I'm sorry. I'll be by tomorrow, promise.

I only have a few minutes, though...

92

00:
12:00,428 -- 00:12:03,931

...so why don't you let me

say hi to the other kitten.

93

00:
12:04,307 -- 00:12:05,974

Marie's out with her friends.

94

00:
12:06,142 -- 00:12:07,726

What, you didn't wanna go?

95

00:
12:07,894 -- 00:12:12,314

-No.

-Okay. Well, give her a pet for me.

96

00:
12:12,482 -- 00:12:14,024

I love you, kitten.

97

00:
12:14,192 -- 00:12:16,026

Love you too, Daddy.

98

00:
12:36,506 -- 00:12:39,174

Yeah. So wacky though, right?

99

00:
12:39,342 -- 00:12:42,344

-No. I could do all right.

-Right there, that's right.

100

00:
12:42,512 -- 00:12:44,096

-You gonna go dance?

-l don't know.

101

00:
12:44,264 -- 00:12:47,182

-You like it strong, don't you?

-Yeah, I like it....

102

00:
12:56,651 -- 00:12:58,318

No, I can't.
