The Runaways Page #2

Synopsis: In 1975, San Fernando Valley teen Joan Larkin reinvents herself as Joan Jett, a guitarist who wants to form an all-girl punk band. She pitches the idea to a sleazy manager, Kim Fowley, who pairs her with a drummer and then searches for a face: he finds Cherie Currie, at age 15, the perfect jailbait image for his purpose; by luck, she can sing. Two others round out the band, The Runaways. Fowley books a tour, signs them to Mercury Records, and packs them off to crowds in Japan. Seeds of conflict sprout early: Fowley puts Cherie front and center in the publicity, she's soon strung out on drugs and vodka, and jealousies arise. Without adult supervision, where can Joan and Cherie end up?

108

00:
14:14,229 -- 00:14:16,355

You see that guy over there?

That's--

109

00:
14:16,773 -- 00:14:18,649

He's a famous record producer.

110

00:
14:21,361 -- 00:14:25,030

This is Dick Johnson.

He'd like to produce you.

111

00:
14:27,116 -- 00:14:29,826

Well, tell Little Richard to heel,

all right?

112

00:
14:29,994 -- 00:14:31,787

No?

113

00:
14:31,955 -- 00:14:33,288

Just...

114

00:
14:33,456 -- 00:14:34,623

...stay.

115

00:

So he got really in.

116

00:
14:39,337 -- 00:14:40,629

-Hey.

-Hey.

117

00:
14:40,797 -- 00:14:43,340

You need a cab or something?

118

00:
14:43,508 -- 00:14:44,883

No.

119

00:
14:46,010 -- 00:14:47,594

Yeah.

120

00:
14:47,762 -- 00:14:50,973

-He's--

-You're Kim Fowley?

121

00:
14:53,977 -- 00:14:57,729

I am the King Hysteria himself.

122

00:
14:57,897 -- 00:14:59,648

And let me guess,

you sing in a band...

123

00:
14:59,816 -- 00:15:01,900

...and it's the greatest band

in the world...

124

00:
15:02,068 -- 00:15:04,486

...and l am the luckiest dog f***er

in outer space...

125

00:
15:04,654 -- 00:15:06,989

...because I get to hear it first, right?

126

00:
15:09,200 -- 00:15:11,159

I'm Joan Jett.

127

00:
15:12,161 -- 00:15:13,620

I play--

128

00:
15:14,372 -- 00:15:16,748

I play guitar. Electric guitar.

129

00:
15:19,002 -- 00:15:21,587

Joan Jett, that's a cool name.

You guys got a demo?

130

00:
15:23,673 -- 00:15:25,173

No.

131

00:
15:25,383 -- 00:15:27,050

No, I don't--

132

00:
15:27,218 -- 00:15:29,845

No guys.

I wanna start an all-girl rock band.

133

00:
15:32,140 -- 00:15:33,640

Really?

134

00:
15:34,142 -- 00:15:37,269

Maybe I am the luckiest

dog f***er after all. Hey, Sandy.

135

00:
15:38,438 -- 00:15:39,896

Hold on, I'll be right back.

136

00:
15:42,525 -- 00:15:43,859

Sandy West is a drummer.

137

00:
15:44,027 -- 00:15:47,070

Joan Jett claims to be

some sort of guitar goddess.

138

00:
15:47,238 -- 00:15:50,449

Well, l didn't say that goddess thing.

139

00:
15:50,617 -- 00:15:54,077

No, no, it's cool, man. These guys are

talking about going to some party...

140

00:
15:54,245 -- 00:15:57,623

...on the south side. lt's supposed

to be bitchen. You wanna go?

141

00:
15:59,042 -- 00:16:01,209

No, I mean, I can't tonight.

But we should jam.

142

00:
16:01,377 -- 00:16:02,419

-Yeah.

-You play drums?

143

00:
16:02,587 -- 00:16:04,713

Yeah, let's play.

144

00:
16:05,965 -- 00:16:09,176

See what kind of noise you two make,

call me if you have something...

145

00:
16:09,344 -- 00:16:12,179

...that won't make me regret

giving you my number, okay?

146

00:
16:12,347 -- 00:16:13,805

Okay.

147

00:
16:14,140 -- 00:16:16,058

Cool, so we'll play.

148

00:
16:19,187 -- 00:16:20,395

Hey.

149

00:
16:22,565 -- 00:16:25,275

Okay, l get it. Yeah, that's enough.

150

00:
16:26,903 -- 00:16:29,946

Hey. Hey, hey, hey. Joan?

151

00:
16:30,448 -- 00:16:31,573

Hello?

152

00:
16:31,741 -- 00:16:34,826

Pick up the phone!

153

00:
16:35,787 -- 00:16:38,080

-Dog meat!

-Hi, sorry.

154

00:
16:38,247 -- 00:16:41,833

Hey, what the f***

you girls been doing over there?

155

00:
16:42,251 -- 00:16:44,753

Well, we've been practicing, man,

like you said.

156

00:
16:44,921 -- 00:16:46,588

Oh, yeah?

157

00:
16:47,173 -- 00:16:48,215

Well, get back to it.

158

00:
16:48,383 -- 00:16:51,510

You b*tches are gonna be bigger

than the f***ing Beatles.

159

00:
16:53,638 -- 00:16:55,055

-Cool.

-Yeah.

160

00:
16:56,766 -- 00:16:58,100

All right.

161

00:
16:58,267 -- 00:16:59,601

Let's do it.

162

00:
16:59,769 -- 00:17:02,145

Ready? One, two, three.

163

00:
17:05,775 -- 00:17:09,695

-Hello, Mrs. West. ls Sandy home?

-Oh, God.

164

00:
17:24,001 -- 00:17:27,170

Tougher, tougher, tougher.

165

00:
17:29,757 -- 00:17:30,799

Come on.

166

00:
17:30,967 -- 00:17:32,801

I mean, come on,

this is really good music.

167

00:
17:32,969 -- 00:17:35,512

There's nothing like this on the radio.

There's nothing.

168

00:
17:35,680 -- 00:17:37,472

Elvis and Priscilla got divorced...

169

00:
17:37,932 -- 00:17:39,391

...the president is a prowler...

170

00:
17:39,559 -- 00:17:42,894

...and all these housewives

talk to their f***ing plants.

171

00:
17:44,105 -- 00:17:47,649

Now, you dogs need to get dirty.

All those little f*** boys out there...

172

00:
17:47,817 -- 00:17:50,360

...are wearing dresses

and leaving their lipstick...

173

00:
17:50,528 -- 00:17:53,321

...on each other's c*cks, okay?

174

00:
17:53,489 -- 00:17:56,283

Now, l wanna hear you

f*** girls growl!

175

00:
18:06,753 -- 00:18:10,172

Halt.

176

00:
18:11,382 -- 00:18:13,508

I know what we're missing.

177

00:
18:14,469 -- 00:18:16,678

-l know what we need.

-What are we missing?

178

00:
18:25,188 -- 00:18:26,229

Bitchen.

179

00:
19:05,728 -- 00:19:07,854

Hey, I like your pants.

180

00:
19:08,022 -- 00:19:09,606

Thanks.

181

00:
19:34,966 -- 00:19:37,801

Kim Fowley, record producer.

You've heard of me.

182

00:
19:38,845 -- 00:19:40,387

Have l?

183

00:
19:41,514 -- 00:19:43,139

I like your style.

184

00:
19:43,307 -- 00:19:46,226

A little Bowie, a little Bardot.

A look on your face that says:

185

00:
19:46,394 -- 00:19:49,104

"I could kick the sh*t

out of a truck driver."

186

00:
19:49,272 -- 00:19:50,355

Joanie.

187

00:
19:50,940 -- 00:19:52,941

This is Joan Jett.

188

00:
19:53,609 -- 00:19:54,693

And you are?

189

00:
19:54,861 -- 00:19:57,112

-Cherie.

-Cherie.

190

00:
19:57,280 -- 00:19:59,531

-Cherie what?

-Currie.

191

00:
19:59,699 -- 00:20:02,492

Cherie Currie.

Is that your real name?

192

00:
20:04,161 -- 00:20:07,956

Well, Cherie Currie, do you sing

or play a musical instrument?

193

00:
20:11,335 -- 00:20:14,129

Yeah. Yeah, l can sing.

194

00:
20:14,297 -- 00:20:16,464

I won a talent show

lip-synching to David Bowie.

195

00:
20:17,133 -- 00:20:18,675

-Why?

-"Why?"

196

00:
20:19,969 -- 00:20:23,305

Asked the maybe-great

Cherie Currie.

197

00:
20:23,472 -- 00:20:24,639

Read my lips.

198

00:
20:24,807 -- 00:20:27,434

We love your look.

199

00:
20:27,602 -- 00:20:32,063

We are choosing you

to be a part of rock 'n' roll history.

200

00:
20:32,273 -- 00:20:34,441

Do you wanna be in a band?

201

00:
20:35,484 -- 00:20:37,235

Are you kidding?

202

00:
20:39,488 -- 00:20:40,822

You know any Suzi Quatro?

203

00:
20:41,490 -- 00:20:42,699

-Yeah.

-Good.

204

00:
20:42,867 -- 00:20:44,743

Learn one of her songs,

don't care which.

205

00:
20:44,911 -- 00:20:47,621

Audition's Saturday.

Joan will tell you where.

206

00:
20:49,999 -- 00:20:51,166

How old are you?

207

00:
