The Runaways Page #9

Synopsis: In 1975, San Fernando Valley teen Joan Larkin reinvents herself as Joan Jett, a guitarist who wants to form an all-girl punk band. She pitches the idea to a sleazy manager, Kim Fowley, who pairs her with a drummer and then searches for a face: he finds Cherie Currie, at age 15, the perfect jailbait image for his purpose; by luck, she can sing. Two others round out the band, The Runaways. Fowley books a tour, signs them to Mercury Records, and packs them off to crowds in Japan. Seeds of conflict sprout early: Fowley puts Cherie front and center in the publicity, she's soon strung out on drugs and vodka, and jealousies arise. Without adult supervision, where can Joan and Cherie end up?

-Come on!

813

01:
19:02,071 -- 01:19:04,155

Why are you always defending her,

Joan?

814

01:
19:04,323 -- 01:19:06,491

Bravo, kiddies. Bravo.

815

01:
19:06,659 -- 01:19:08,159

What the f*** is this?

816

01:
19:08,327 -- 01:19:10,412

It's pretty nasty, Kim.

817

01:
19:10,579 -- 01:19:12,330

This?

818

01:
19:13,624 -- 01:19:16,000

This is what we call controversy.

819

01:
19:16,168 -- 01:19:18,002

This is what we call publicity.

820

01:
19:18,170 -- 01:19:21,005

It's what we call a juicy story!

821

01:
19:22,466 -- 01:19:24,801

Oh, and you're welcome.

By the way, thanks to me...

822

01:
19:24,969 -- 01:19:29,389

...this article is twice as long

and half of it is about you. Okay?

823

01:
19:29,765 -- 01:19:33,601

It's press, my budding young starlet,

not prestige.

824

01:
19:33,769 -- 01:19:35,353

Get used to it.

825

01:
19:35,813 -- 01:19:37,522

Get in that booth

and finish the song.

826

01:
19:37,690 -- 01:19:41,359

We've got this place on lockout. l'm

paying out the f***ing nose. Let's go.

827

01:
19:41,569 -- 01:19:43,027

Let's go. Sing.

828

01:
19:43,195 -- 01:19:44,863

Sing.

829

01:
19:45,030 -- 01:19:46,698

Sing!

830

01:
19:50,369 -- 01:19:53,037

-No.

-No?

831

01:
19:55,374 -- 01:19:56,875

No.

832

01:
19:58,210 -- 01:20:01,796

-Cherie, we have to finish.

-Yeah, get in the booth, Cherie.

833

01:
20:01,964 -- 01:20:03,381

Shut the f*** up, Lita!

834

01:
20:03,549 -- 01:20:05,341

-You shut up.

-Shut the f*** up!

835

01:
20:05,509 -- 01:20:08,052

Come on. Cherie, come on.

836

01:
20:09,430 -- 01:20:13,057

-l'm not singing.

-Oh, Cherie.

837

01:
20:13,392 -- 01:20:15,310

Of course you're singing,

you're a singer.

838

01:
20:15,478 -- 01:20:19,564

That's what you do. You sing and you

strut around in your underwear, okay?

839

01:
20:19,940 -- 01:20:22,275

But most importantly,

you do what I tell you to do.

840

01:
20:22,443 -- 01:20:25,945

And right now l'm telling you

to get in the booth, so get in the booth.

841

01:
20:26,113 -- 01:20:27,530

No.

842

01:
20:29,325 -- 01:20:31,493

You get in that booth, Cherie.

843

01:
20:31,869 -- 01:20:33,286

No.

844

01:
20:33,913 -- 01:20:35,997

Get in the booth

before l lose my patience...

845

01:
20:36,165 -- 01:20:38,249

...and send you back

where l rescued you from.

846

01:
20:38,417 -- 01:20:40,585

Good. Send me back.

847

01:
20:40,753 -- 01:20:43,588

-l don't give a sh*t. l wanna go back.

-Careful.

848

01:
20:46,842 -- 01:20:48,468

-Get in the booth.

-No.

849

01:
20:48,636 -- 01:20:50,803

-Get in the booth!

-No!

850

01:
20:51,222 -- 01:20:53,431

I'm not gonna be

your little lap dog anymore.

851

01:
20:53,599 -- 01:20:55,600

You've been speaking for me

this whole time.

852

01:
20:55,768 -- 01:20:57,310

You get in the f***ing booth.

853

01:
20:57,978 -- 01:20:59,729

I'm done.

854

01:
21:27,675 -- 01:21:32,595

You dog c*nts will be lucky to get

a gig singing in the f***ing shower.

855

01:
22:11,510 -- 01:22:12,885

You know what?

856

01:
22:14,763 -- 01:22:18,016

Good f***ing job! No, really!

Really! Good f***ing job!

857

01:
22:18,434 -- 01:22:20,518

Anarchy! Mayhem!

858

01:
22:24,273 -- 01:22:26,232

Rock 'n' roll, baby!

859

01:
22:30,112 -- 01:22:32,030

Come on, Joanie.

860

01:
22:32,740 -- 01:22:34,532

F*** you! F*** you!

861

01:
22:34,992 -- 01:22:37,035

F*** you!

862

01:
22:39,330 -- 01:22:41,497

Rock 'n' roll.

863

01:
22:47,338 -- 01:22:49,047

F*** me.

864

01:
23:20,579 -- 01:23:22,872

I think I just need a break...

865

01:
23:23,248 -- 01:23:25,583

...from the band, or something.

866

01:
23:29,088 -- 01:23:32,423

Ifyou haven't noticed,

we're in the middle of cutting a record.

867

01:
23:40,265 -- 01:23:42,809

I just gotta spend time

with my family.

868

01:
23:46,105 -- 01:23:47,772

Yourfamily?

869

01:
23:49,149 -- 01:23:50,817

Who?

870

01:
23:52,236 -- 01:23:55,738

No, really, your mom in lndonesia

or your drunk dad?

871

01:
23:58,367 -- 01:24:00,785

Are we not

yourfucked-up family now?

872

01:
24:04,665 -- 01:24:06,916

I can't do this anymore.

873

01:
24:10,713 -- 01:24:13,297

I need my life back, you know?

874

01:
24:33,652 -- 01:24:35,653

This is my life.

875

01:
24:50,169 -- 01:24:52,295

The Runaways.

876

01:
24:54,757 -- 01:24:57,884

The Runaways, they were a...

877

01:
24:59,094 -- 01:25:02,972

...conceptual rock project that failed.

878

01:
25:05,017 -- 01:25:09,145

Kim, do you have any regret

that the girls turned on you?

879

01:
25:14,943 -- 01:25:16,360

No.

880

01:
25:16,528 -- 01:25:18,946

I'm glad they turned on me.

881

01:
25:20,908 -- 01:25:22,992

It shows spirit.

882

01:
25:23,160 -- 01:25:26,537

If l'm training a wild dog...

883

01:
25:26,705 -- 01:25:29,957

...and it bites me in the hand...

884

01:
25:30,125 -- 01:25:32,668

...then l know I've trained it well.

885

01:
25:33,420 -- 01:25:37,256

My hand is made of iron.

886

01:
25:38,217 -- 01:25:45,389

That's all it took.

887

01:
25:46,433 -- 01:25:50,561

She's 16 years old

and she's already a creep.

888

01:
25:53,649 -- 01:25:57,318

Am l worried about them?

No, they'll be fine.

889

01:
25:57,486 -- 01:26:01,155

I mean, a yearfrom now, they'll all

be living in a trailer park in the Valley.

890

01:
26:01,323 -- 01:26:04,992

Fat, pregnant,

and happy as fleas on a dog.

891

01:
26:05,160 -- 01:26:06,911

But me...

892

01:
26:07,412 -- 01:26:09,288

...poor me...

893

01:
26:10,499 -- 01:26:13,584

...l'm on my way to becoming...

894

01:
26:14,336 -- 01:26:18,214

...rock 'n' roll legend.

895

01:
26:27,766 -- 01:26:30,726

Put your finger there.

896

01:
26:36,149 -- 01:26:38,442

Yeah, something like that.

897

01:
26:40,112 -- 01:26:41,696

Cool.

898

01:
26:43,115 -- 01:26:45,950

I wish I could play.

I'd be in a band with you.

899

01:
26:46,118 -- 01:26:47,952

Yeah, but you can't.

900

01:
26:48,745 -- 01:26:51,455

I heard Cherie's doing a movie.

901

01:
26:51,832 -- 01:26:53,291

Yeah?

902

01:
26:53,876 -- 01:26:55,459

You don't need her.

903

01:
26:56,128 -- 01:26:59,046

You should go solo, like Bowie.

904

01:
27:00,549 -- 01:27:04,176

Bowie'sjust Bowie.

He doesn't need any band.

905

01:
27:04,761 -- 01:27:06,721

It was my band.

906

01:
27:09,474 -- 01:27:11,893

I wrote the songs,

she just sang them.

907

01:
27:12,060 -- 01:27:15,146

Yeah, well,

people always remember the singer.

908

01:
27:29,828 -- 01:27:31,037

Get up.

909

01:
27:31,204 -- 01:27:33,497

Hey, come on. Get up.

910

01:
27:33,665 -- 01:27:36,042

Everyone out. Hey.

911

01:
27:36,209 -- 01:27:38,252

Come on, get up.

912

01:
27:39,671 -- 01:27:42,673

Everyone, get the f*** out!

Come on!

913

01:
27:44,384 -- 01:27:45,801

-Hey! Come on!

-What?

914

01:
27:45,969 -- 01:27:47,553

F*** off.

915

01:
27:48,305 -- 01:27:49,972

All right, all right.

916

01:
27:50,140 -- 01:27:52,391

Yeah, f***ing nice.

917

01:
27:57,898 -- 01:28:00,107

Stay. Stay right here.

918

01:
28:00,275 -- 01:28:02,026
