TomKat: Double Impact Page #7

Season #All
Synopsis: We describe our story as Jack Reacher meets Hanna with a touch of Thin Man savoir vivre tossed in. A story that had to be told. A love story of tremendous impact. A story of a small group of people willing to risk everything to stop the most serious threat to Western Civilization in modern history. There comes a time when a citizen must fulfill the requirements of the constitution if the government fails in its obligation. TomKat: Double Impact is one of these stories.

FIRST COP:

We don't recognize other state's

carry licenses here. You could be in trouble here, young lady.

Another COP walks up and covers the body with a blanket.

DETECTIVE:

Detective

DENISE BROWN follows him.

DETECTIVE DENISE BROWN

(talking to everyone)

What a crazy night -- must be the full moon. A mugging took place just a hundred yards from here and now this.

Brown approaches Kat.

DETECTIVE BROWN (CONT'D) Hi, I am Detective Denise Brown.

What's your name?

The detective pulls out her notepad and writes down the information.

KAT:

Kathryn St. John. Kathryn with a

K.

The detective pulls out her flashlight and lifts the blanket that covers Griffin. She inspects the body.

DETECTIVE BROWN:

Jesus, that's a nasty wound. Did

you use a .45?

KAT:

No a .38 with Hydra-Shoks. I'm

good with a gun.

DETECTIVE BROWN:

Oh good Lordie, Annie Oakley has

arrived. Perhaps we should turn you loose to clean up the town.

KAT:

Detective, this town could use a

little disinfectant if this is an example of what you have walking around.

Kat gestures to the blanket-covered heap a few feet away.

35.

DETECTIVE BROWN:

I want to continue the questioning

at the precinct. The officer will take you to the car.

FIRST COP Follow me ma'am.

INT. POLICE PRECINCT WAITING ROOM - LATER

Tom and Martin sit on an old oak precinct bench. They now wear tie and jacket. Kat enters the room through the door followed by Detective Brown.

DETECTIVE BROWN:

This is clearly a case of self

defense so we won't hold you. Please don't leave the city. I'll call you on Monday with any new information. I am sure the DA will want to talk to you.

KAT:

Thank you, detective.

Kat St. John and the detective shake hands. The detective turns around and heads back towards the door. Kat stops when she sees Tom Ford and Martin Paxton.

KAT:

Oh, it's you. You two were there

after I shot that man?

TOM:

Yes, I am Tom Ford and this is

Martin Paxton. We thought you may need some help.

MARTIN:

Yes, I'm an attorney, but not a

criminal attorney. However, my best friend is. You should talk to him. I'll tell him not to charge you.

KAT:

I appreciate your help about this,

but I have to talk to my father about this first. Do you have a card?

Tom Ford and Martin Paxton each hand her their card.

36.

KAT:

Thank you. I am sure I'll call.

She puts the cards in her bag, smiles at them and walks out. Tom Ford and Martin Paxton watch as she leaves the precinct.

MARTIN:

That is the definition of Her

Royal Hotness. She is absolutely beautiful, Tom.

TOM:

(smiling)

Calm down Martin. You are married. (a beat) However, I'm not!

INT. THE PLAZA HOTEL ROOM - KAT'S ROOM - MORNING Kat sleeps. Her phone rings and she answers it.

CINDY (V.O.)

Kat. What happened? You are on the

front page of every newspaper for shooting someone in Central Park.

KAT:

What? The newspapers found out

about it?

CINDY:

Are you alright? They say that you

killed a guy named Bill Griffin last night in the park and Griffin was a serial rapist and murderer. This is crazy. The newspapers are calling you Bernice Goetz.

KAT:

Bernice Goetz?

CINDY (V.O.)

Yeah. Bernie Goetz was the guy who

shot some attackers in the subway a couple of decades ago. They have your Williams yearbook picture plastered across the front page. Amazing.

KAT:

Cindy, I'll talk to you later. I

want to call room service for these newspapers.

37.

Kat calls room service for the papers.

KAT:

Room service. Can you send me

today's newspapers? Room 421.

Minutes later, a knock on the door. Kat opens the door and

is handed

the paper

The phone phone.

Hello.

DETECTIVE BROWN:

Ms. St. John, the AG's office

called me. They want to talk to you Monday morning at 9:00 A.M. I suggest that you bring a lawyer with you. This is the same D.A. Who prosecuted Bernie Goetz. I saw the tabloids this morning.

KAT:

I never heard of Bernie Goetz

until this morning.

DETECTIVE BROWN:

Before your time. By the way, we

found a large diamond ring in the stiff's room. It was Rebecca Rosenberg's. We are certain that Griffin was the rapist and murderer we've been looking for. You did the city a service; I hope the DA's office appreciates your brave accomplishment.

KAT:

Detective, I believe it won't make

one bit of difference to the D.A.'S office. Thanks for your help.

EXT. 1 HOGAN PLACE - DA'S OFFICE - ESTABLISHING - DAY

INT. DA'S OFFICE - CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY.

Kat sits. PAUL BERNARD walks in and introduces himself.

a stack of newspapers by the valet. She looks at with her photo on the front page and laughs.

rings. Kat puts down the paper and answers the KAT (CONT'D)

38.

PAUL:

I talked to a friend in O'Grady's

office, he's an assistant D.A. He told me O'Grady won't charge you if you apologize for breaking New York law by bringing in your gun.

KAT:

Apologize for what? Saving my

life? New York should apologize to me for giving that thug early release. He would have been in prison for another decade, considering his many crimes.

Kat stands as her anger rises.

KAT (CON'T)

Rebecca Rosenberg would now be

alive and I would be home in Florida today after enjoying a weekend wedding with my friends. As it is, I face a year in jail for simply exercising my God-given right to defend myself.

PAUL:

I realize it sounds crazy and is

certainly unfair but I believe that will be the offer. I can't tell you to do anything; all I can do is to present the facts and the legal ramifications. It will be your decision.

An Assistant D.A. Knocks on the door.

FIRST ASSISTANT D.A. District Attorney O'Grady will see

you now. Please follow me.

Paul puts the paper back in the briefcase and follows Kat and the Assistant D.A. to the D.A.'s office.

They enter another conference room where John O'GRADY, thin and gaunt, a John Carradine look-a-like and another ASSISTANT D.A. (A young woman) sits. Kat and Paul sit down at the long conference table.

39.

JOHN O'GRADY

Ms. St. John, I'm pleased you

weren't harmed by your encounter with Mr. Griffin. Unfortunately, a death resulted, but these things happen. As you are aware, we have strict laws against carrying handguns without a permit. Though your Florida permit is current and in order, you violated the Sullivan Act, section 400.00 of the New York Penal Law -- a Class D felony that has a sentence of two to seven years. You knowingly violated the law by taking your gun into the city, but because of mitigating circumstances we will not fully prosecute if you cooperate.

KAT:

What do you mean by cooperate?

JOHN:

We would like you to apologize for

breaking our handgun law and swear that you will never again bring a gun into New York. You will be given a year's probation and a $10,000 fine.

Paul leans over and speaks into Kat's ear. Kat nods affirmatively.

PAUL:

No apology. No Probation. No fine.

You give her a written warning not to bring a gun into the city.

JOHN:

Is that your decision, Ms. St.

John?

KAT:

Mr. O'Grady, I'd be dead now if I

were not carrying a gun. It is beyond my comprehension why you would want me to apologize and promise never to carry again in NYC the weapon that saved my life. Unless you can present at least one valid, rational reason, I will absolutely not apologize to you and agree to your terms.
