TOMKAT:
DOUBLE IMPACT

EXT. NEW HAMPSHIRE FARM PASTURE - EARLY AFTERNOON

It is a warm cloudless, windless day. TOM FORD wears long camouflage pants, an untucked khaki-colored wife-beater shirt and hiking boots. He is a well-muscled fit young man, 21-year old. He lies prone on top of an outcrop about one- hundred feet above the pasture.

His well-worn Dartmouth College Indian baseball hat has been turned around. He lies prone aiming his scoped rifle at a woodchuck 400 yards away. He takes the shot. The woodchuck ducks into its hole just before the bullet passes by. Dirt is kicked up behind the woodchuck by the bullet.

TOM:

(grinning)

Lucky fellow.

A siren blares from the direction of the road about five- hundred yards away to his right. A state trooper cruiser pulls over an old rundown pickup truck. A trooper from the cruiser emerges from the vehicle, puts on his hat and walks towards the pickup.

Tom pans his gun to the developing scene. He looks through his scope.

INT. PICKUP TRUCK. DAY.

Three brothers sit across the bench seat of the pickup. SAM LATTIMORE, the driver, pulls out a revolver.

SAM:

We are f***ed if that cop finds

the three keys behind this seat. There is no way I'm going back to the can.

LARRY LATTIMORE opens the glove compartment revealing two more revolvers. Larry hands one to EARL LATTIMORE.

As the trooper approaches the truck, the two pickup doors crash open and the three armed men jump out. Sam, shoots the trooper. Trooper collapses to the ground from a center chest hit.

2.

Sam then moves toward the fallen officer. He kicks the trooper.

SAM He's done.

The three brothers approach the patrol car for the downed trooper's partner who now seeks protection behind his patrol car. The trooper pulls out his pistol from the holster, waiting for the shooters.

Tom, focuses the rifle at his new targets -- the Lattimore brothers. Tom hears another shot. Through the scope he sees the second officer now lying on the road holding his leg – his car gave him only partial protection.

The Lattimore brothers warily move toward the trooper from two sides of the squad car with their handguns extended in front of them.

Tom spots the crosshairs high on Sam. He fires, striking Sam's chest killing him instantly.

LARRY:

What the f***?

A bullet strikes Larry, the second brother, in the lower chest. He gives a shuddering low moan and crashes to the ground.

Earl, the third brother, turns and with a terrified look on his face sprints towards the pickup truck. He leaps into the driver's seat simultaneously starting the motor and slamming the door. Tom points the rifle toward the pickup, aims at the driver's side window and pulls the trigger.

Trooper BILL LAYTON, looks at the pickup and sees the side glass shatter. The inside of the windshield was instantly splashed by a thick reddish film of blood and brain. Only the pickup's quiet idle is heard.

TOM:

(under his breath)

Looks like a hat trick.

Layton with a hand on his wounded leg crawls into his cruiser to call for help.

Tom hastily gathers his sandbag, ammo, three empty shell casings and rifle. He crawls off the rock, loads his WW2 Willys Jeep and drives to the paved town road that takes him west to his home.

3.

EXT. THE HOME OF DR. AND MRS. ROBERT FORD. DAYTIME.

Tom drives his jeep up the long driveway leading to a large Cotswold-styled stone cottage. He parks the jeep and enters house.

INT. THE FORD HOME. DAY.

In the living room, Tom approaches his father.

DR. FORD

You will not believe this, Tom,

someone shot and killed those three Lattimore brothers as they ambushed two troopers on Moosilauke Highway. The news just came over the police scanner. I guess they will need the coroner's services and not mine.

TOM:

I know. I shot and killed them.

Dr. Ford says nothing, showing only a slight amazement.

TOM (cont.d)

I just couldn't watch those

troopers killed without doing something.

DR. FORD

Well, you did well, son. Both

troopers will be OK. They are now at Dartmouth-Hitchcock – one with a bullet lodged in his thigh. Fortunately, the bullet missed the femoral artery. The other suffered broken ribs from being shot. He wore a kevlar vest but the bullet slammed him hard enough to break the ribs and temporarily knock him out.

TOM That's great news!

DR FORD:

It's ironic that Bill Layton, one

of the wounded troopers, arrested Sam Lattimore twice for felonies.

DR FORD (CONT'D)

Sam should have been locked away

for two or three more years but a judge freed him on an early release program. Well, that decision cost three lives...you saved the troopers' lives – you'll be considered a hero. How long were those shots?

TOM:

Five-hundred and twenty yards, but

I would prefer we keep this our secret.

DR. FORD

Well, I will, of course, but I

must tell your mother. his father's shoulder.

TOM Let me tell her.

DR. FORD

Sure. I'll get her. She working in the back on her garden. We'll meet you in the library.

INT. THE FORD HOME - LIBRARY - CONTINUOUS

The room has four walls of bookcases. Gold-framed oil paintings of Amelia's stern-looking Briggs ancestors fill the spaces above the bookcases. Tom stands as his parents

enter the

room.

AMELIA:

Thomas, Robert informed me that

you have something to tell me.

TOM:

Yes, Mom. This afternoon I shot

and killed three men who intended to murder a couple of state troopers.

Oh?

AMELIA:

TOM:

I also would like to keep this our

family secret. (MORE)

TOM (CONT'D)

Of course, I'm not a vigilante but

some ambitious, aggressive prosecutor could use this case as a springboard for a political career. Think of how he could frame it -- Some rich kid shooting three poor locals. Of course, it would mean little in court but it is a perfect headline grabber.

DR. FORD

I can think of no reason to invite

any legal scrutiny of any type. What do you think, Amelia?

AMELIA:

We have been talking about a world

trip for your 21st birthday. Perhaps this is a good time.

INT. WILLIAMS COLLEGE CLASSROOM - DAY

A lecture female. A a lecture

hall populated by about fifty STUDENTS -- mostly stereotypical, middle-aged female PROFESSOR gives on women's history.

PROFESSOR GOLDBERG Today's lecture will focus on the

feminist icon, Molly Yard.

Ms.Yard was one of the founders of the National Organization of Women and became its president in 1987. She was especially known for her fight against the confirmation of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court.

KAT ST. JOHN (interrupting the

professor)

Molly Yard was also known for her many beauty tips.

Half the classroom laughs and the other half boos and hisses.

PROFESSOR GOLDBERG

(smiling)

Thank you Ms. St. John for your learned observation.
