A few members of the campus group, The Daughters of Sappho, took umbrage at the joke and confront KAT ST. JOHN in the hall after class.
GLADYS KELSEY leads them. Gladys stands six foot three inches tall and tips the scales around two hundred fifty pounds. Gladys is dressed all in black. Black sneakers with black socks. Black sweatpants. A black sweatshirt with white Gothic lettering on the front stating, "Wiccans for Gaia."
Her black hat catches Kat's attention: a black pointy top ski hat displaying a white embroidered pentangle.
KAT:
(looking up at Gladys and
laughing)
Who are you? The Blair Witch?
GLADYS:
(growling)
I heard you had some mouth. You are a threat to liberated women everywhere. I'm here to give you a little behavioral adjustment.
KAT:
Well it looks like you OD'd on
your man pills this morning. Careful, they can make life miserable for any girl.I understand why you're a little prickly this morning.
Infuriated, Gladys charges Kat. -- Kat grabs her arm and executes a successful Uki-Otashi on Gladys' large bulk. Kat quickly slams Gladys down -- knocking most of the air from Gladys' lungs. Kat follows by thrusting her fingers deep behind her attacker's windpipe. The other girls move in.
KAT (loudly)
Back off, unless you want your friend's voice box pulled out!
Gladys frantically waves her free arm, a signal for her friends to back off. They do. Kat gives Gladys a solid backhand slap across her face. The Daughters of Sappho gasp as the slap reverberates through the hall.

KAT (CONT'D) (looking down at Gladys)
The next time I won't be so magnanimous. I hope there won't be a next time. Will there?
Kat lessens pressure on her throat. Gladys vigorously shakes her head no. Kat releases her, stands and defiantly walks through the group of girls who separate as Kat passes.
INT. "MAD" ANTHONY WAYNE'S RANGER ACADEMY - BARRACKS - DAY
Somewhere in the California desert.
Forty men (each wearing name badges) listen to a welcoming lecture by "MAD" ANTHONY WAYNE. Tom is among the audience.
ANTHONY:
Welcome everyone to our Ranger
school. For the next eight weeks we will emulate Ranger training except for the explosives -- I couldn't get any insurance to cover it. So no live grenades.
We will, however, work with dummy grenades. Most of the training will center on fitness, combat tactics and firearms. I see most of you are in pretty good shape and after our rigorous training you will pass the Ranger Fitness Test. You better! I will not give you a certificate of completion unless you pass the test.
The recruits laugh at his comment.
The actual Army's Ranger school divides the training into three phases - the Benning, Mountain and Swamp. We merge these phases into one, but, I promise you, you will not be shortchanged in your training.
I have three assistants.
8.
ANTHONY (CONT'D)
Guys, do you want to stand when I
say your name. DERRICK WELLES. Derrick stands.
ANTHONY (CONT'D)
Derrick is a 12-year Ranger with tours in Iraq and Africa. He has earned a Bronze Medal from his combat in Iraq and will be training you in combat tactics. JOHN OTIS.
ANTHONY (CONT'D)
John was not a Ranger but a SEAL
for eight years. SEALS work cheap enough so I decided to hire him.
Recruits laughs
John will work with you on the fitness phase and obstacle course of the training. You will soon hate him but he really is a good guy. Last, but not least, we have CARLOS RODRIGUEZ.
Carlos stands.
ANTHONY (CONT'D)
Carlos was a decorated sniper with thirty six confirmed kills in Iraq
and other Middle Eastern countries. Carlos will train you on shooting. You will become acquainted with many firearms from the Beretta 9 mm sidearm to the Barrett 50. Any questions? None? Dismissed!
As the men exit the building, Tom walks up to Anthony.
9.
TOM:
Mr. Wayne, one of the reasons I
decided to come here was for instruction on the Barrett 50. I am very good shooting up to five hundred yards but would like to extend that distance and that can only be done with a bigger gun - like the Barrett. If I give you some extra money would it be possible to take extra lessons with the Barrett?
ANTHONY:
You want to pay extra for lessons
on the Barrett?
TOM Yes sir.
ANTHONY:
Carlos. Can you come here?
Carlos, talking to one of the recruits, excuses himself and walks to Tom Ford and Anthony Wayne.
CARLOS:
What is it, Anthony?
TOM:
This recruit wants to pay us a few
extra bucks to give him supplementary lessons on the Barrett. Take him to the five- hundred yard range and test him with the Remington 700. See if he's ready for the Barrett.
CARLOS:
Sure. Let's go, Tom Ford.
Tom follows Carlos to a gun locker in the back of the room. He pulls out a rifle.
Tom follows Carlos outside to the range.
CARLOS:
See those targets out there? On
the far right is a reactive two plate spinner. The plates are painted yellow and are about the size of a human head.

Carlos is
CARLOS (CONT'D)
They are five-hundred yards away.
Do you see it?
loading the gun with the magazine.
TOM I do.
CARLOS:
(handing Tom the rifle)
You have five rounds to show me what you can do.
Tom takes the gun, assumes a prone position at the booth and rests the gun on a sandbag. He takes aim and shoots. He misses. Carlos rolls his eyes. Tom stands up and faces Carlos.
TOM:
Your scope is set for about 300
yards. Mind if I make a few adjustments.
CARLOS Go right ahead.
Tom manipulates a few dials on the scope and looks through it to the target. Satisfied he again takes a prone position and aims the rifle. He shoots four rounds within ten seconds spinning the target rapidly the entire time.
CARLOS:
(astounded)
...and you want me to teach you? That what pretty good shooting. You will love the Barrett. We'll start tomorrow after the usual training.
TOM Great!

END MONTAGE:
STUDENTS eat lunch at picnic tables. A recruit walks up to Tom with a tray of food.
JACKIE BRANDT:
Mind if I join you?
TOM:
Of course not. Please sit down.
JACKIE:
My name is Jackie Brandt. I've
been watching you. You pick this stuff up very easily.
TOM:
I love every minute of it, even
the morning runs. Jackie, you look completely at ease with everything they throw at us – physical conditioning, hand-to-hand combat, the obstacle course, weapons handling...you seamlessly assumed leadership of your platoon during last week's paintball contest when the appointed leader showed he didn't have a clue of what to do.
JACKIE:
Yeah, I felt bad for the guy.
TOM:
Are you a vet? You look like this
is all second nature to you.
JACKIE:
Well, thanks for the kind words
but I'm only an accountant from San Bernardino who only wants to stay in shape. I noticed you taking extra lessons from Carlos shooting the Barrett. Why is that?
