Both Bryan and Veronica look at each other grimly, yet they keep progressing forward.
INT. VALLEY-WEST SECTION-DAY
The two remaining survivors keep heading towards the direction of the center of the arena.
VERONICA:
How does it feel to be innocent and in this game?
BRYAN:
VERONICA:
I guess. You’ve been quite adamant about being innocent.
BRYAN:
Because I am.
VERONICA:
If that’s the case, then you’ll get a lot of money.
BRYAN:
(Appearing downcast)
But that’s if they find out that I am innocent.
VERONICA:
However, if you survive the game, then you’re free from your death sentence.
BRYAN:
(Smiles) That’s good news.
The two share a laugh. But then Veronica’s face turns dark again.
VERONICA:
Whoever was the actual murderer in your case is not a good person.
BRYAN:
That doesn’t matter in this case. Not if they never catch him or her.
VERONICA:
You’re right. It wouldn’t matter to you.
BRYAN:
Anyways. I think we should get back on topic and focus on finishing the game.
Yeah...
VERONICA:
Suddenly, a bush near Bryan and Veronica moves.
The two quickly turn around and look at the bush suspiciously.
BRYAN:
I think we have company.
VERONICA:
Should we run?
BRYAN:
Considering that I have a hunch that it’s the smaller wolf, we should stand our ground.
VERONICA:
Or not.
Veronica points to the alpha wolf, which is about a quarter- of-a-mile from the two.
Clearly, the smaller wolf is helping the alpha find Bryan and Veronica.
BRYAN:
Ok, let’s go.
And the two make a slow run towards the south section of the arena.
They look behind themselves every once in a while, aware that they’re still not alone in the arena.
INT. VALLEY-NEAR CENTER OF ARENA-DAY
Bryan and Veronica close in on the center of the arena. As soon as they see Shaun’s dead body, they stop.
BRYAN:
I guess Shaun’s dead too.
Shaun’s head is mostly ripped off his neck, and his face and body are covered in blood.
Flies swarm around his corpse.
VERONICA:
Yes. (Pauses) Anyways, I think we should keep going forward.
BRYAN:
VERONICA:
Why? We’d be safer the further we go.
BRYAN:
Not necessarily. Say we kill the white wolf, and the alpha is on our trail. Then if we go out in the open where the center of the arena happens to be, then the alpha will be more visible to us while we fight it.
VERONICA:
(Skeptically)
And how would we plan to fight it?
BRYAN:
With our knives. What other choice would we have?
VERONICA:
You’re right. I could-
Suddenly, the white wolf leaps out from behind a set of thick trees and clamps onto Veronica’s right hand with its teeth.
She screams and drops her knife.
Bryan comes to her aid and stabs the wolf repeatedly in the stomach, but not before Veronica loses two-thirds of her right index-finger.
Blood pours from the stump of her finger and Bryan sees this.
BRYAN:
Sit on the ground.
Veronica collapses onto the earth and sits, almost curled up into a ball.
She stares at her the blood squirting out of her missing finger.
Bryan whips out his first-aid-kit.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
Let me see your finger.
VERONICA:
(Trembles) Ok...
Veronica holds out her right hand and Bryan slices out a bit of his shirt and wraps it tightly around her finger.
Once Bryan’s finished patching up Veronica’s finger, he stands up.
Meanwhile, Veronica remains seated and is crying.
BRYAN:
Calm down.
VERONICA:
If I don’t make it out of this, I just want to let you know that I love you.
For a few seconds, Bryan says nothing. And then he smiles at Veronica.
BRYAN:
And I love you too.
VERONICA:
I see it again.
Bryan turns towards the direction that Veronica is referring to, and sees the alpha wolf coming closer.
While the wolf doesn’t see Bryan and Veronica, it’s surely coming their way quickly.
BRYAN:
We should go now.
VERONICA:
Further south?
BRYAN:
How about...we travel in a slightly different direction, just to make that thing guess where we are.
VERONICA:
You mean we travel at a slight angle?
Yes.
BRYAN:
VERONICA:
That’s a good idea.
BRYAN:
Here. I’ll help you up.
Bryan and Veronica grab each other’s hands, and he hoists her onto to her feet with his powerful arms.
VERONICA:
Thanks.
And the two of them head slightly away from the center of the arena to the right.
About five minutes later, Bryan looks behind him. Surely enough, the wolf is on their trail.
And suddenly, it turns its head and sees the two.
BRYAN:
Veronica, we’re in trouble.
VERONICA:
What?
Slightly dazed, Veronica turns around and sees the wolf watching them from just over a football-field away.
The wolf remains still.
VERONICA (CONT'D)
BRYAN:
I don’t know. Maybe it doesn’t know that we’re the only two who are left inside the arena.
VERONICA:
Alright, I think that heading to the center of the arena would be a good idea right now.
BRYAN:
Yeah, since we can’t outrun it.
VERONICA:
Let’s go slowly.
Bryan and Veronica make their way back towards the direction of the center of the arena.
And then the wolf is on the move again, following them. This time, it runs at a slow trot.
BRYAN:
(Urgently)
We need to pick up the pace.
VERONICA:
Agreed.
The two begin to jog, and then suddenly, the wolf speeds after them.
BRYAN:
Let’s go.
VERONICA:
To the center of the arena?
BRYAN:
Where else?
And the two sprint towards the center of the arena.
Bryan begins to climb his way on top of the boulder when the alpha wolf arrives.
He immediately stops climbing and he looks the wolf directly in the eyes.
BRYAN:
Come on, come to me.
Bryan holds two knives shakily in his hands.
The wolf gazes at him from head to toe, as if analyzing if Bryan will be a worthy opponent or not. Meanwhile, Veronica is nowhere to be found.
Then, the fight begins:
After a few seconds, the beast charges at Bryan.
And Bryan charges back and jumps into the air. He aims the tip of one of his knives at the wolf’s head while the other, at its neck. However, the wolf easily dodges the knives and knocks Bryan onto the ground. With Bryan out of position, the wolf charges at him freely and begins to bite Bryan when Veronica comes out of nowhere and sinks her knife into its back.
The wolf growls then turns on Veronica, who stumbles backwards and falls onto the ground.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
Throw me your knife!
As soon as the wolf charges Veronica, she throws her knife at Bryan. And he catches it. Then Bryan gets up, lunges at the wolf while it bites away at Veronica.
And he sinks the knife into its skull. The fight is over.
INT. CONTROL ROOM-DAY
The game makers watch the two survivors from inside the control room. They watch until all the time has expired from the game, despite the wolves having been killed beforehand.
ERIC:
It looks like we have two survivors.
AMANDA:
Alright. Let’s call in the helicopters.
Eric turns on his intercom.
ERIC:
(Speaks to the main game maker)
Hello, Jim. The game is finished.
JIM:
Send in the helicopters.
Yes, sir.
ERIC:
Eric turns off his intercom.
