And although the wolves travel slowly, they’re surely heading to the cabin.
VERONICA:
Should we stay in here?
BRYAN:
I don’t know. I think we should, since we’re upstairs and the wolves can’t see us yet.
VERONICA:
And what if they break into the cabin?
BRYAN:
Then we’re screwed. (Pauses) That is, unless we can get to the roof. But if they manage to also get onto the roof, then we’d need to jump down. And the roof is about fifteen feet above the ground.
VERONICA:
We can always jump off of the balcony. But what if some of them get onto the balcony and onto the roof at the same time?
BRYAN:
Then we’ll have to fight them.
The group watches as the five wolves reach the cabin and begin to surround it as the wolves split far apart.
Then four of the wolves circle the cabin as one tries to BREAK IN through the front door.
VERONICA:
(Urgently)
I think we need to head to the roof now.
BRYAN:
We should wait.
VERONICA:
But why? Once they get inside it’ll be too late to get onto the roof.
BRYAN:
They don’t see us yet. So if they can’t break in through any of the doors, then they might just go away.
VERONICA:
Look! They’re CIRCLING the cabin. Obviously, they suspect or can even sense that we’re here.
Bryan hesitates.
The other wolves join each other at the front door and make a collective effort to take down the door.
Slowly, the refrigerator that has been placed in front of the door begins to budge, and Bryan makes his decision.
BRYAN:
You’re right. We need to get onto the roof.
Let’s go.
VERONICA:
Bryan is the first to get up, and then others follow him out, with Amy coming last.
AMY:
I don’t want to go...Please don’t make me.
JACK:
You have to.
Jack grabs a hold of Amy’s arm and drags her out onto the balcony, where the others already are.
EXT. CABIN-DAY
The group makes it onto the roof, one-by-one, until Amy, the last person, makes it also.
Meanwhile, below, the wolves manage to break into the cabin.
BRYAN:
It’s a good thing we’re armed. They just broke in.
Bryan and the others each hold a knife.
AMY:
Do you think they’ll be able to get onto the roof?
BRYAN:
Considering that the roof is not that high...yes.
The roof is about five feet above the highest section of the balcony, which is the railing.
AMY:
Then I think we should back away from the edge of the roof, you know, to avoid getting killed automatically.
BRYAN:
No. We need to stay on the edge.
AMY:
Why?
BRYAN:
In order to stop the wolves from getting onto the roof. Because once they start running after us, we’re in trouble.
AMY:
I’m not fighting the wolves.
Amy continues to panic.
BRYAN:
(Urges)
Come on. We need a group effort.
Amy shakes her head and backs away from the roof.
VERONICA:
(Glares at Amy) Get back here!
But Amy remains in a crouched position behind the group.
BRYAN:
Four of us shouldn’t be too bad, I guess...
The wolves make it onto the balcony, and the group of five hold their breath.
For a few seconds, the wolves simply gaze menacingly at the group. And then, they climb onto the railing of the balcony.
Then the fight commences:
The wolves jump onto the edge of the roof all at the same time, and Bryan and Veronica manage to stab two of the wolves, KILLING them.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
We need to get off the roof!
Four of the group members already have scratches on their arms from the wolves biting and clawing at them. However, Amy, who wasn’t in the “battle” received no wounds, yet is running scared towards the other end of the roof.
Bryan and the other three (excluding Amy) are able to shrug off the last three wolves and jump back onto the balcony.
VERONICA:
Where’s Amy?
BRYAN:
I don’t know.
JACK:
I think she went to the other end of the roof.
The largest of the wolves jumps back onto the balcony while the other two wolves go after Amy.
For a few seconds, the gray wolf stares at the people with saliva pouring out of its mouth.
BRYAN:
I’ll fight the wolf. You guys get off the balcony.
The other three back up slowly behind Bryan, and then they jump off the balcony onto the ground below them.
They watch as the wolf leaps at Bryan and gets into a brief scuffle with him when Bryan slits the wolf’s throat.
Meanwhile, Amy jumps fifteen feet down off the roof, injures herself, and is killed by the remaining two wolves.
The other four get to Amy but not in time.
BRYAN (CONT'D)
Oh no.
CURTIS:
Is she dead???
BRYAN:
I think so.
Veronica covers her mouth with her hands and cries.
VERONICA:
If only she listened to us.
BRYAN:
Let’s try to focus here. We have two of them remaining.
The two wolves face the four remaining people, and then the wolves run off into the distance.
JACK:
Where are they headed?
BRYAN:
I think they’re going back up north.
JACK:
They’re probably going to tell their friends where we are.
BRYAN:
Great! Then we have to leave the cabin.
JACK:
But it’s the only safe place we’ve found.
BRYAN:
Let’s think. Us against more than half-a-dozen wolves, including the alpha, and we’ll certainly get killed if we stay here.
JACK:
Then we need to go in a direction where they won’t suspect us to go in. And it needs to be where we can hide.
BRYAN:
I say we go northeast.
JACK:
Wait. Back to where the wolves are? Why?
BRYAN:
Because they’ll be going south to chase us.
JACK:
So you’re saying they’re not expecting us to go north?
Bryan nods.
BRYAN:
That’s exactly what I’m saying.
JACK:
Then let’s go. I don’t want to waste any time.
BRYAN:
Ok. Let’s head in the direction that I proposed we should go in.
The four survivors head northeast.
INT. VALLEY-SOUTH SECTION OF ARENA-FAR FROM CABIN-DUSK
It’s almost nighttime.
Bryan and the other three people who are still alive, are still in the south section of the arena.
They make their way northeast.
Veronica continues to look at Bryan suspiciously.
BRYAN:
Can you at least try to appreciate the fact that I might be innocent of the crime that I was accused of?
VERONICA:
Well, it’s hard for me to trust you. I mean, both you and Jack...
JACK:
On another topic, how do you think the wolves were able to get onto the roof?
BRYAN:
They can jump, you know-
JACK:
No. I mean, how were they able to climb onto the roof with no arms?
BRYAN:
It must’ve been a genetic mutation.
CURTIS:
Yeah. I’ve seen this happen on games that were actually broadcasted on television.
BRYAN:
At least the wolves aren’t faster than normal.
JACK:
But most of them are larger.
Bryan nods in agreement.
For a few minutes, both he and the others continue on in silence.
And then they continue their conversation.
VERONICA:
(Suspiciously)
So how did you get caught?
BRYAN:
It’s a long story. I don’t want to explain.
VERONICA:
Come on. We have time.
BRYAN:
(Concedes) Alright.
BEGIN FLASHBACK:
EXT. PARK-NIGHT
Bryan goes jogging at night in a park. He runs along a narrow path, and wears all-black.
BRYAN V.O.C.
I was just running at night inside a park.
As soon as he spots three human corpses lying on the pavement next to the grass, he walks hesitantly towards them.
BRYAN V.O.C. (CONT'D)
And then I saw three dead bodies, all lying on the pavement. I was about to contact the police, when they already arrived.
