Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony Page #5

Synopsis: In 2010, producer Lauren Faust reworked the notoriously sexist My Little Pony franchise to attempt a quality TV series for both girls and their parents to enjoy, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. As it turns out, Faust succeeded beyond anyone's expectations with an acclaimed hit that also created an adult and teen male fandom no one saw coming, the Bronies. This film explores this following with a look at the franchise, the lives of particular fans around the world and the creative passions their seemingly unusual interest inspires. Although sometimes troubled by the prejudice of others, these kindred spirits enjoy a community experience both in spirit and at conventions that has a special magic all its own.

Dialogue:
0,0:17:08.52,0:17:11.58,Default,,0,0,0,,I need you guys to help me find some pony with a problem I can fix before sundown!

Dialogue:
0,0:17:11.76,0:17:14.28,Default,,0,0,0,,[dramatic music] MY WHOLE LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!

Dialogue:
0,0:17:14.28,0:17:15.00,Default,,0,0,0,,[exasperated sigh]

Dialogue:
0,0:17:15.54,0:17:21.54,Default,,0,0,0,,I can see obsessive, and, um, not coping with certain situations,

Dialogue:
0,0:17:21.78,0:17:26.30,Default,,0,0,0,,and I'm- I- I was wondering, of the episodes I've watched,

Dialogue:
0,0:17:26.30,0:17:31.46,Default,,0,0,0,,whether perhaps one of the script writers were, or knew somebody with Asperger's.

Dialogue:
0,0:17:31.46,0:17:33.84,Default,,0,0,0,,Because it was, it was so, so similar.

Dialogue:
0,0:19:21.48,0:19:23.78,Default,,0,0,0,,And magic makes it all complete!

Dialogue:
0,0:19:24.04,0:19:26.00,Default,,0,0,0,,My Little Pony.

Dialogue:
0,0:19:26.00,0:19:32.14,Default,,0,0,0,,Do you know you are my very best friends!

Dialogue:
0,0:19:52.74,0:19:55.04,Default,,0,0,0,,I'm known as LaserPon3 on the internet.

Dialogue:
0,0:19:55.04,0:19:57.16,Default,,0,0,0,,And I make the laser pony animations.

Dialogue:
0,0:19:57.24,0:20:03.14,Default,,0,0,0,,When I make a new show, first I start with a notepad, just a physical notepad

Dialogue:
0,0:20:03.14,0:20:08.62,Default,,0,0,0,,and start writing down everything that I hear in the song that I associate with the song,

Dialogue:
0,0:20:08.62,0:20:12.58,Default,,0,0,0,,like I hear a sad part, I maybe think of violins, I maybe think of this, I maybe think of that,

Dialogue:
0,0:20:12.58,0:20:17.70,Default,,0,0,0,,and what write everything down, and I would, eventually I have a whole paper filled with,

Dialogue:
0,0:20:17.70,0:20:20.74,Default,,0,0,0,,with words, which I then grab and make a story out of.

Dialogue:
0,0:20:20.74,0:20:25.50,Default,,0,0,0,,And I basically put some characters from the show, I put, associate them with those objects,

Dialogue:
0,0:20:25.50,0:20:28.48,Default,,0,0,0,,I associate them with the emotions that go on the show.

Dialogue:
0,0:20:28.52,0:20:32.08,Default,,0,0,0,,And in that kind of way I start developing a very, very thin storyline.

Dialogue:
0,0:20:32.08,0:20:37.26,Default,,0,0,0,,Then I start drawing some frames, some test frames to see if, you know,

Dialogue:
0,0:20:37.26,0:20:40.74,Default,,0,0,0,,it appears so it doesn't flicker too much, like the frame rate doesn't drop too much.

Dialogue:
0,0:20:41.12,0:20:45.44,Default,,0,0,0,,From there on I just start making the show and then, it just- my mind goes all by itself.

Dialogue:
0,0:20:45.44,0:20:48.04,Default,,0,0,0,,...Yes, you!

Dialogue:
0,0:20:48.30,0:20:50.58,Default,,0,0,0,,It requires a lot of precision, a lot of work.

Dialogue:
0,0:20:50.96,0:20:53.86,Default,,0,0,0,,Uh, you have to make sure that the free laser beams that come out of,

Dialogue:
0,0:20:53.86,0:20:56.76,Default,,0,0,0,,that are in the projector, that combine to one beam,

Dialogue:
0,0:20:56.78,0:20:59.14,Default,,0,0,0,,uh, are perfectly overlapping each other.

Dialogue:
0,0:20:59.14,0:21:04.18,Default,,0,0,0,,For example, a white laser beam is, you're perceiving it as white,

Dialogue:
0,0:21:04.18,0:21:07.78,Default,,0,0,0,,but it's actually still three separate laser beams just tightly placed together.

Dialogue:
0,0:21:08.36,0:21:11.90,Default,,0,0,0,,So every kind of small mis-alignment will make a difference,

Dialogue:
0,0:21:11.94,0:21:13.44,Default,,0,0,0,,and your audience will be able to see it.

Dialogue:
0,0:21:13.98,0:21:16.50,Default,,0,0,0,,The Elements of Harmony, uh, playing a role in my life,

Dialogue:
0,0:21:16.50,0:21:19.58,Default,,0,0,0,,I think generosity plays an important part.

Dialogue:
0,0:21:19.58,0:21:24.20,Default,,0,0,0,,You know, making stuff for other people, like for free just gives me a great feel,

Dialogue:
0,0:21:24.20,0:21:26.06,Default,,0,0,0,,that, that, people can enjoy what I do.

Dialogue:
0,0:21:33.56,0:21:37.58,Default,,0,0,0,,I was just sitting there, I was just livin' day to day, you know, in the house,

Dialogue:
0,0:21:37.58,0:21:41.20,Default,,0,0,0,,uh, you know just trying to get by doing work for my father here and there, and

Dialogue:
0,0:21:41.20,0:21:45.78,Default,,0,0,0,,I didn't really have anything to look forward to, just you know, to see the sunset,

Dialogue:
0,0:21:45.78,0:21:48.96,Default,,0,0,0,,and that was it, you know, we'd go to the next day.

Dialogue:
0,0:21:49.50,0:21:52.84,Default,,0,0,0,,As soon as ponies came into my life, I was like, wow, I never want the day to end,

Dialogue:
0,0:21:52.84,0:21:57.50,Default,,0,0,0,,you know, it's just such a positive outlook on things.

Dialogue:
0,0:21:57.86,0:21:59.66,Default,,0,0,0,,And now I have something to look forward to.

Dialogue:
0,0:21:59.96,0:22:02.40,Default,,0,0,0,,Here we have a strong stereotyping that

Dialogue:
0,0:22:02.40,0:22:08.44,Default,,0,0,0,,if you aren't extremely masculine and chauvinistic then you're a homosexual,

Dialogue:
0,0:22:08.44,0:22:11.70,Default,,0,0,0,,and in this area homosexuality is also looked down upon, so

Dialogue:
0,0:22:12.20,0:22:14.64,Default,,0,0,0,,I guess it comes hand in hand that if you watch a show that's

Dialogue:
0,0:22:15.16,0:22:17.78,Default,,0,0,0,,target audience was children, small girls,

Dialogue:
0,0:22:17.78,0:22:22.28,Default,,0,0,0,,then suddenly maybe you're homosexual, and then it's a reason to hate you.

Dialogue:
0,0:22:22.46,0:22:26.74,Default,,0,0,0,,If you choose to be a Brony in the Appalachian Mountains, you're gonna have problems.

Dialogue:
0,0:22:26.98,0:22:29.98,Default,,0,0,0,,You might get beat up, you could get cussed at,

Dialogue:
0,0:22:30.02,0:22:31.88,Default,,0,0,0,,you could get things thrown at you.

Dialogue:
0,0:22:31.96,0:22:34.80,Default,,0,0,0,,It's not an easy thing.

Dialogue:
0,0:22:36.96,0:22:40.60,Default,,0,0,0,,One night there was a, uh, a few rednecks standing around my car,

Dialogue:
0,0:22:41.12,0:22:44.60,Default,,0,0,0,,uh, there was a truck in front of my car, behind it, so I couldn't move.

Dialogue:
0,0:22:44.74,0:22:46.70,Default,,0,0,0,,They had tire irons, baseball bats.

Dialogue:
0,0:22:47.30,0:22:52.20,Default,,0,0,0,,I had just got uh, custom decals uh, for my windows,

Dialogue:
0,0:22:52.20,0:22:55.86,Default,,0,0,0,,uh, on my back window I had a large Celestia and a large Luna,

Dialogue:
0,0:22:55.86,0:22:59.36,Default,,0,0,0,,and they were kneeling up together and forming an archway and it was just the coolest thing.

Dialogue:
0,0:23:00.02,0:23:02.46,Default,,0,0,0,,Uh, and they went right to my back window,

Dialogue:
0,0:23:02.82,0:23:05.22,Default,,0,0,0,,hit it a few times and then, smashed it.

Dialogue:
0,0:23:05.22,0:23:05.82,Default,,0,0,0,,[breaking glass]

Dialogue:
0,0:23:05.88,0:23:08.96,Default,,0,0,0,,The guy, he ran to his truck and came back out,
