WILLIAM (CONT'D)

So maybe just the highlights. I’m seven and home alone because I’m grounded due to a conflict between my parents and I. They have gone out to visit relatives on a Sunday night and I’m playing with my older brothers chemistry set and I’m using the Bunsen burner to light the plastic monkey on the end of my pencil, with the sulfur oxide on it,it ignites and when it burst into flames I guess throwing it in the waist basket full of paper, wasn't such a great idea and I tried to hide the evidence but the smell of smoke,I’m sure gave it away.

He continues to stretch

Or the time I got hit in the head in the playground by a moving swing with a person on it that I walked into and had to be rushed to the hospital, all the time Mom your freaking out and me, trying to calm you down so you could concentrate on saving my life and getting me to the hospital so I could live, and we did it together.

Or the time I ate the whole bar of chocolate X lax and totally sh*t myself in the middle of dinner, with guests present, that was fun.

Or the time I was in the woods and I tackled a skunk because I thought it was a rabbit and I got spayed quite good.

Or the time I ran back inside the house to use the washroom just before we were all leaving on our trip to drive to Florida and the keys to car fell out of my back pocket into the toilet as I flushed, and did not notice until the last second, when it was to late to grab them, and all I saw was the keys making the last turn in the Poo and the paper just before disappearing forever.

William gets up and sits on the head stone.

Well lets not examine any more of the things that possibly did or did not go wrong in my life.

But sometimes I could be so stupid it hurt.

WILLIAM (CONT'D)

Like the time I told you Grandad that I would watch the big boxing match with you and I went to my friends house to watch it instead, later Grama told me how hurt you were, and for that I am eternally sorry. Because you Grandad were my all time best friend and confidant our walks together after dinner were something that I enjoyed more then you will ever know and for that and so much more I am forever grateful, thank you for my life.

William shifts his position on the head stone.

And grama-Dorothy May Brown-Dyer I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking care of me day after day with love and food and warmth and we both know a whole lot more, I am overwhelmed with emotion of what I owe to you and just how important a role you played in the shaping of my life my life, thank you.

I only wished I could of got back to Florida sooner so we could of spent more time together before you passed away.

WILLIAM STANDS UP

Mother:
Patricia Dorothy Dyer 1932-1997, I should of tried harder and taken more time to get alone with you and understand you so we could of hung out more, so how do you truly thank someone who has given you life? THANK YOU FOREVER AND EVER.

WILLIAM RESTS HIS ASS AGAINST THE HEADSTONE

Well here we are in the present moment all caught up and up to date with my life at hand and Grandad as you always said, if you can’t be good looking at least be interesting. I’m happy and I have all my ducks in a row. So the basic question is do you think I have done enough? We spend our whole lives trying to figure out how we appear to other people. We are a society of measurements, we feel the need to measure everything so we can understand it better, put it into a category and then work on the solution to solve the problem in which we as a society have created in the first place.

WILLIAM (CONT'D)

The last thought of me, when will that be? The last time someone will utter my name, or speak of me fondly? I guess my story will end, and die out when anyone who has ever known me dies. It will probably be my friends or family depending on what happens in the next twenty years.

This is an interesting thought, because how important is it that the memory of some one lives on and on? People like Oprah Winfrey,Tom Cruise,Robert Redford, Paul Newman they will live on in the minds of millions if not billions long after they have passed away. But me I will just be a momentary thought in the minds of people who have personally known me, and that will all end when they cess to exist.

And how do I feel about that? Does this mean my importance on this planet was less important or note worthy then say John F Kennedy or Ernest Hemmingway or Martin Luther King Jr? I would say yes, I have not contributed as much as say Noam Chomski or Steven Speilberg or Pierre Elliot Trudeau, they have given much more to the world and to themselves then I ever will.

I am a mere mortal doing what I can and contributing all I have to give for the day. I know I could contribute so much more, and maybe tomorrow I will, and become a greater person and give things to the world that it needs for its internal and external growth and development.

But for today I have given all I have to give and I am very happy with my contribution to the planet and it’s people, today.

William picks up the earn and starts to turn it in his hands.

WILLIAM (CONT'D)

My life has been great, measured by any standards and I have learned to never regret one single second of the past because every thing that came after would never of happened and there has been some fantastic moments and great experiences that I will cherish until my last breath. I like to say,I came in crying and I’m going out smiling.

You have been the most amazing people and the most wonderful Grandparents a person could ever have wished for and I am very thankful for that. I got to share my life with you, both of you, and thank you for the pleasure of your company, I appreciated every second that I spent with both of you.

William stands up and acknowledges the earn, well standing at the foot of the grave looking at the headstone.

Well here comes the hardest part of it all, saying good-bye and thanking you once again Mother, for giving birth to me and teaching me what I needed to know to survive in this world.

William takes the lid off of the earn.

And in the end, we are all just fertilizer for the earth.

William starts to empty the container of it’s contents onto the ground and into the air.

Earth to earth dust to dust and ashes to ashes.

(A moment of silence)

Death is final and every day above ground is a good day.

William turns off the I pod and starts to pack up his stuff, and takes it to the car. He returns to the grave with a copy of his book and places it on the head stone.

Here’s a copy of my book,I know your not going to get a chance to read it, but I would like to leave it here, because it’s dedicated to all of you...

I guess I can stay a few more minutes, I’ll have a little rest with all of you before I start my journey.
